I would also tell them to stick it!!. They may have a small child that has puked more than once!! or pets or who knows what lurks under beds/sofas etc.
With the whole credit crunch (i hate those words, sick of hearing it!).
Carpet companies would snap your hand off to clinch a deal with you my friend carpeted a whole house for around £1,000 and at least you know they are brand new. I got new carpet last summer and they had free fitting and underlay offers etc so shop around.
And you never know the petty penny pinchers may leave them.

I can see both sides to this - sorry but my natural empathy kicks in!

The vendors may be in a really tough position - chap gets relocated with work, forcing him to sell his house at a really low point in the market (company will pay relocation costs but not depreciation). They may even find that they're not withdrawing any equity from the property and are therefore trying to scrape every penny they can for the new house because they just don't have a healthy enough deposit any more (and as we know, mortgage lenders aren't being lenient).

So yes, they are going to try every trick in the book to try and squeeze the buyers as much as possible - after all, they might have loved that house and it breaks their heart to have to sell it for a loss, and from their point of view their buyers are snapping up a bargain. They're not doing anything illegal or outside the rules.

So play the game - it's a really stressful business for everyone involved so forget who's right and who's wrong, who's being spiteful... just sort out whether you'd rather buy the carpets (at that price or less) or sort your own out when you move in. Forgive the vendors for trying, after all you don't have to buy them!

Natural empathy but only for the vendors??

Oh of course not - I said I can see both sides! It's just that the vendors weren't yet represented on this thread :)

threaten to withdraw your offer unless the carpets are included. it's a buyers market. they are trying it on.

  • When we bought first home they took all carpets and underlay - even took up some of gripper rods! Glad in the end as we bought much nicer ones :)

Certainly would never pay for curtains would want my own style! I wouldn't expect them to be left though.

Thinking about it when we bought the vendors wanted money for some cheap shelving, and a towel rail but it was inset in to tiles, so to remove it would have damaged the walls and left holes.
I told them that I was more than happy for them to take them, as they were not to my taste, but I would expect the damage to be made good, this would have entailed a tiler making good and trying to source the original tiles, needless to say they left them!
They wanted £30 quid or something, not much, prob what they cost new, but I remember feeling quite cross at the pettiness! They also tried it on for other things........its all coming back to me now!

Think of it as them doing you a favour, you don't what's being on or under their carpets.
Most people are working too hard to make really decent money:eek:

How about when you tell them your not having them that you would want the floors made good? All glue removed and Floors sanded (if they are floorboards) that may be enough to discourage them!

25 years ago carpets it was normal to pay extra for carpets and curtains. I did when I bought a house in 80s. I took carpets and curtains with me when I moves a year later as my buyer wouldn’t pay the very reasonable price I asked for them. The carpets and curtain were good quality and I used them in my new house for quite some time. I’d leave them now but things were different in the past. If you think I was bad the person I bought off not only took the curtains and carpets but one of the kitchen cupboards. this was before the time of filling forms on what you would take.
