I've taken the hardrive out so I hope to gawd one of those external enclosure boxes is going to be ok. It was screwed flat to the front of the tower behind the switch on button unlike other hardisks.

    The hardisk says

FUJITSU MODEL MPC3064AT -P2 ID YFIN

    PART NO CAO1675-B90400P2

    DATE 1998-11

Can anyone recommend a hardisk box enclosure on Amazon.co.uk that can be used for both ide and sata hardrives so I can use it for both please?

What should I keep this in until I get the box as its quite exposed?
    Thanx

Swapping different drives in and out of the same enclosure isn't a good idea. Buy yourself an enclosure for the 6GB hard drive, install it and leave it.

The other pc's you have, are any ide (or have an ide port) or are they all sata?

if they are ide, you could just plug the drive in, and copy the files across

Yes they both have ide but only one has sata, one has just 1 drive which is sata and this one has 2 drives both ide and no space for any more. This hardrive was connected in a weird way though, as it had 2 end ribbon bits into the same space on the motherboard I thought it was one connection but when I took it out it was 2 pieces. I don't want this drive on the downstairs pc though or the contents and there wouldnt be anywhere to plug it into the motherboard on this one as it already has 2 drives.
    Thanx

Little confused how many pc's you have,

one new pc with sata + an ide connection
one w98 pc with 2 hard disks?
    third pc?

If you have any working pc, with an ide connector on the motherboard, then you can connect the old hard disk to it, and it should work (turn it off first) The only thing to check is that the csm jumper on the old hard disk is in the correct place.

    CS (cable select) should work.
M (master) - if the drive is on the end of a cable
S (slave) - if the drive is in the middle of a cable, for example if you had a cd drive on the end.

Sorry, they are both older pcs actually the ones that are in use I mean

one win xp with 2 ide hardrives upstairs, no room for any more

one win xp with 1 sata hardrive downstairs has room for more but dont want the disk in there or contents
    Thanx

on the machine with 2 drives (both hard disks?),

if the drives are on the same cable, disconnect the middle drive, and put your 98 drive in.
if the drives are on different cables, you'll have to disconnect one at a time to identify the c: drive, and put the disk on the other connector.

once you copied your data, then you can transfer it to the other pc across the network, or burn a cd.

The 2 disks are ide hardrives on this pc upstairs but no room for more, could I temporaily disconnect one without damaging it to put the 98 one in just to get the contents over to the c drive?

The downstairs one is the one with 1 sata hardrive, it can take ide though but that was when it had a master ide drive and a slave sata drive. The ide was removed though and the sata put in as master.

If I did put the 6gb drive in the sata master pc downstairs I will have to set up file sharing to transfer wont I on both pcs but I'm not sure I can do it to start up as a slave with a sata as master
    Thanx

Probably easier if you use the upstairs one

turn it off, disconnect one drive, boot it, see if it goes into windows.

if it does, switch it off, and attach the 98 drive, checking that the jumper on it is set to cable select.

The only thing to be careful with, is not to force the cable, and bend any pins, and make sure the connector is the correct way around (most modern cable have a tab to stop the problem)

    and don't accidentally short anything

As far as Amazon is concerned I've just had a look and they appear expensive compared to most, especially Ebuyer, and I can't see one that I would recommend. If you're determined to use them just make sure you buy from Amazon themselves not one of their third party sellers.
