If you're planning to bin the old PC I would remove the old drive before you do anyway.
Its then just a matter of connecting it to your other PC as Posted said.

Would that external disc box work on any pc once its set up?

Can you get external disc boxes suitable for both ide and the other type as they would be quite useful to have?

This particular hardrive as its so old is only about 6bg in size but the contents are important will a disc box like that still work on it? its also not a box type shape its shaped similar to a disc
    Thanx

take the monitor to the pc, or plug your existing monitor into it, you just need to see what is on screen temporarily, for just enough time to get networking going.

I'm also looking at the external hardrive cases though as they look quite useful to have

Ok youve convinced me :) I will try this but I wont be able to do it tonight now, I have some important things I have to do which I am behind on but then this happened and sidetracked me. I have to get those things done first then come back to this when I've done the other which will probably be tomorrow or the next day. The reason this has happened is because I saved it all to AOL Xdrive and today found an email telling me they were not continuing Xdrive anymore and everything was deleted on 9th Jan 2009 I wish I had downloaded it to this pc before :( it was something I had forgotten about.
    Thanx

Yes - they allow you to connect the old IDE drive to another PC via a USB socket

Yes - they are available for newer SATA drives as well

Not sure what a disc shaped hard drive looks like. They all come in a box shaped case as far as I remember!!

Yes - external drive boxes have USB connections so you could plug it into any PC with a USB port. You can get drive boxes for USB or eSATA, sometimes for both on the same box. A box will work with a 6GB drive no problem and it will fit ok too.

Which ones would you recommend on Amazon.co.uk as I have some vouchers for that site so could get one from there.

Obviously its more useful to have an external enclosure that I can use for sata and ide hardrives if its possible as I do have both types. I'm not sure which size I would need though as they say 2.5 and 3.5 does that matter? I'm not bothered about compactness they reliability of it is more important

2.5" drives are used in laptops.3.5" drives are used in desktops.
I'll have to come back to you on the Amazon recommendation...

Unless anyone else out there has bought one from them??
