Thankyou got the ip stuff up now on the xp comp though
I still dont understand why I need a keyboard and mouse in the win98 tower, its turned on and plugged into the back of the router. Cant I get to it through this keyboard mouse and monitor like its an extra drive or anything?
tells me

Take the hard drive out of the win98 PC and fit it as a second drive to your new PC.
I thought about this but it is a very old one the pc was from about 1998 so I wont have connections for it, would be so much easier though if I could. Was a bit scared to move it though too in case it got messed up somehowThanx

Did you do winipcfg on the 98 pc, or the xp?
You need the keyboard and mouse to check the ip address, and to check that filesharing is setup, unless it is done already, in which case, just map the drive.
If you want to remote control it from xp, you need to install something like vnc, but that also requires keyboard/mouse action on the 98 pc
winipcfg = 98
ipconfig = xp0 -
I did it the ipconfig way on the win xp pro one can I tell anything by that? the one I'm using now. I don't know if the old pc is set up for file sharing or not, I never changed anything is all I know unless any security things would set it to not share.
If I need a keyboard and mouse I will also need a monitor then to see if it is set up wont I... Its just such a mess setting that all up as there is a lot of furniture and wires around all put behind things which would be a right job to get to which is why I was avoiding having to do that as I'd have to disconnect this one to put in the win 98 one then have to do it all againThanx

To use a usb flashdrive, you will need to plug it in to kb/mouse/video
The options are:
Setup networking, at no cost.
Buy a usb flash drive
plug old disk into new pc, assuming new pc has an ide connector
buy a usb-ide adapter, and attach old disk to new pc.0 -
Or buy an external hard disk box and fit the drive out of the old PC into it. That will give you a portable hard drive when you've finished copying your stuff off.0

Thanx, I cant get my head round it tonight though now as its going to take me a while to sort out and I have to spend time on it without getting in a mess. I'm going to think about the networking option or the attach old disc to pc option but in order to do that I need to sort out an easier way to get it attached to a monitor. I do have another pc downstairs connected wirelessly it might be easier for me to take the tower downstairs to attach to that monitor but it will mean me coming up and downstairs each time I have to check anything on the net on this one. I think that one has room for another hardrive downstiars it just has one in at the moment which is not an ide but it can take both.
If I try connecting it to the monitor downstairs how should it be set up for file sharing before I can bring it back upstairs to connect it to the router again? perhaps I should try that first before taking the hardrive out?Thanx
