I have an old win 98 pc that is not connected to the internet its in a right state and it would be really hard to get it on the net so I want to know if there is a usb pen that would work on this to get the files that are still on it off? I dont even think I have a mouse that works on it now and cant instal one as its so old, the old one broke. I just want to get all the stuff off. It is not 2nd edition its just the win98 first edition.

If there is an alternative thing to transfer to another pc even that would do too if it would work
Thanx

If you have a router, you could plug it in, and transfer the files, either direct or via an upload site.

I'm worried about messing up my system set up though it took me ages to sort it out as its a separate router and modem. What would it exactly entail? Would I have to disconnect the pc I'm using now?
    Thanx

plug it into any of the 3.

    then run winipcfg

    release then renew.

If it gives you an ip address, it will be on the network/internet

then you need to map a drive to \\192.168.1.x\c where x is either your new pc or the old ones allocated ip address, and c is a share that has been setup in sharing. You might have to fiddle to get the sharing working, but try the above as a starting point.

What is winpcfg and what does it do?

Will this pc I'm using now still be on the net and it will it get effected by doing this or the router system?

What does mapping the drive to \\192.168.1.x\c do?

Sorry for so many questions I just want to properly understand before I attempt it

I wont want this permanentally connected I just want to get the stuff off then have everything as it is now before I do it.
    Thanx

If tcpip is installed, it gives it an ip address, which lets it communicate on the network.

It won't affect your pc, (unless it happens to be infected with a worm, which would be caught by your virus scanner anyway)

mapping gives you a drive letter, so you can copy files in explorer from one pc to the other.

This might sound a daft question but has this old tower got to be connected to its own keyboard monitor and mouse? or can I do everything else via the one I'm using now?

I have put an ethernet wire connected to the back of router in an empty one and plugged the tower in and turned it on is this right so far? god its noisy just concerned it will hold out long enough to get the stuff off it.

I did not close everything down and reboot the router and everything should I have done?
    Thanx

    Doesn't matter.
