What to have with cauliflower cheese?

  • Seeing as you're serving the cauli cheese is the main dish rather than a side to meat, I'd go for something like baked tomatoes which I love with any kind of cheesey dish - just as is with a bit of veg/olive oil and seasoning or can jazz up a bit with herbs/garlic etc - and baked mushrooms ditto - either the normal ones or the big field ones are lovely. Both can be cooked in the oven with the cauli cheese.

Either that or - big vat of salad, baked beans ( you'd probably need a cork after combining that with the cauli tho :D ) or steamed green beans/brocolli/spinach etc.

I made a cauliflower and broccoli bake with a carton of soup, topped with sliced potatoes, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds.

I tend to do cauliflower cheese with home made potato wedges and then some 'rats tails' on the side - i.e. a form of ratatouille made using simply onion, green pepper, courgettes and either skinned fresh tomatoes or a tin of tomatoes depending upon what's in.

I tend to dish up a tomatoey rice thingy, as the grains compliment the cheese/cauli quite well and it's provides a good colour contrast too.

I just cook the rice in a tin of tomatoes and stock.

We always have cauliflower cheese on the side when we have shepherds pie. It really goes well together. Yum!
  • H always has it with chips. DS likes it with pasta. I prefer it on its own with just some bread and butter to make a cauiflower cheese sandwich.

Some good ideas on here I shall have to try, which doubtless will be met with resistance

:o I used to make cauliflower cheese with a can of tuna mixed in, until I got morning sickness and the smell was awful, haven't managed to face it again - but it was a really cheap filling meal!
  • We always serve cauliflower cheese with triangles of toast. They look really attractive arranged round the edge of the dish like little sails when you serve it. I also do a bowl of extra toast triangles. The crunchiness goes really well with the softer texture of the cauliflower and cheese sauce.

Ahh... now that reminds me. My cousin, who taught me how to cook it, quite often served it with a nice big chunk of cod. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

  • I like salad on the side with Cauli Cheese. Then again, it may only be me .......
