does anyone know the origin of the word 'chav'? i believe it's an acronym for Council House And Violent.

i really liked the doc julie burchill did a few years ago where she said that the word 'chav' was basically invented by the middle class to put down the working class.

    working class?
    when do they work?

they had some on that John Prescott programme, he called them working class, they said that they didnt work

and people complain about public sector workers getting paid for "non-jobs".

i don't. my job is quite "non" sometimes. i try to keep that secret though.

I saw that programme. I particularly found interesting the unemployed girls in pink velour IIRC (chav, you are all screaming at the screen, right?) who said they were middle class, not working class, because they didn't work an rather lived on benefit income. Its all very well to complain about class culture but it seems there is much confusion over what clas we belong to ourselves :o

  • re the wor ''chav'' I think its horrid, what ever its origin, of which my understanding is much the same as Ninky's. Its even sadder that dislike the word and hate the idea of lexically segregating a group of people in this way, yet I can identify the people labeled as chavs, and understand it. I can't help think that this is a joke of society...the chavs, me having typical middle class dislike for the word chav, and yet in my gut appreciating why it exists. It makes me very sad, and I feel embarrassed to be part of this mockary. :(

I don't mind Chavs. They keep me entertained with their endless antics on 'Street Wars', 'Cops With Cameras' and 'P*ssed Up Britain' or whatever the other programme is called.

It's basically Benidorm for people who think that have more class than people who go to Benidorm, but in reality just have a bit more cash.

    And whats wrong with benidorm??!!;)

2.5 hours away, many a holiday when I was a kid was enjoyed there I dont think you can go wrong :D

You can enjoy the spanish culture and tapas too which I think a lot of people forget if you go to the older area. Yes the English yob culture areas are not particularly attractive but you make of it what you want if you steer clear of there :D

The term "middle class" winds me up no end.
Both mine and my boyfriend's parents were brought up in a very "working class" way. My boyfriend's parents still are.
However my Dad worked his way to what most people would describe as "middle class", and I could probably be described as "middle class". However this presumes some sort of LACK of work, rather than the added work some (not all) have done in order to "up-class" themselves, so to speak. The whole system is ridiculously outdated too. Whilst financially I had a middle class upbringing, our whole outlook was most certainly not middle class. I went to comprehensive school, worked from age 13, etc and mixed with a wide range of people. At medical school, I mixed with an entirely different range of people, from Eton boys and Cheltenham girls, to Council estate kids on bursaries. I (hope) I can mix pretty well with most groups of people.
The one thing, however, in common with all these groups is "work". To get to where they are today, they had to work bloomin hard at it. You don't buy a place at medical school. So "working class" should mean an entirely different thing to what it does mean.

The other thing that annoys me is the "social class 1-5" system that we had to learn at med school.
If I was single I would be in social class 1, however it's based on the man's occupation, therefore I am actually social class 2! Ridiculous.

Evidently the whole thing is utterly pointless, as it doesn't actually portray anything about wealth, occupation, outlook etc.

I had a compliment given to me today though. I was reading The Telegraph as it had come free with a bottle of water in the hospital shop. It was particularly awful, and one of the other doctors saw me reading it and said "you don't strike me as a Torygraph girl". I'm not. And I'm particularly glad I don't come across as one.

Now blu ray is something I really don't get! Are they the same as DVDs? I'm imagining they aren't or no one would buy them, surely? There is nothing wrong with DVDs as far as I'm aware, so not entirely sure of the benefits.

I'm still getting over the fact that you don't have to rewind DVDs. Amazing.
