There is a good guide to setting up boot options for common BIOSs here.
Read article, my boot sequence at present is disabled. Sequence is IDE Hitachi 1, USB CD ROM 6. before I mess I presume if CD is 1 AND IDE HITACHI is 2. then when no CD is in it auto goes to 2? The article says there may be a temporary Boot fromCD, need to digest it a bit more before changing .Cheers

Hi Masonic, I ,m after your help yet again. This is Boot proirity order in Bios ,under boot. (Phoenix)1.ide hdd:hitachi hts54~~~~~~~~(s
    2ide cd:hl-dt-st dvdram gsa
    3pci bev:mba v9.4.5 slot 0800
    4usb hdd
    5usb cdrom
    6usb fdc
    7 usb key
    8
    excluded from boot order.
Am I correct in thinking to run Slax I need 5 as 1, then rest to follow as stated above? Also, when Slax dvd is not inserted in comp, does it automatically boot from 2, which I presume is my hard drive as it stands at present.? cheers

Your hard drive is number 1 at present (ide hdd). Your current number 2 (ide cd) looks to be your CD drive. Thus you need to swap your number 1 with your number 2 so you try to boot from CD first, then your hard drive.

Before doing that, have you tried pressing all of the F keys (e.g. F1, F2, F3 etc.) to see if you can get access to a boot menu. This is a one-time menu that will give you the option to select which device you want to boot from.

What atypical said ;). 4,5,6 and 7 are just for usb attached devices, so ignore those. When you make the changes, your system works its way down the list until it finds something it can boot from, so when there is no CD present it will boot from your hard drive.

Hi atypical, tried all f keys.13.4.5.6..7.9.10 all give me "Windows boot manager" only 1 option as I see it.windows vista highlighted with arrow.to choose OS, F8 takes me to "windows memory diagnostics"safe mode etc, fix, no boot options I can see.F10 "edit boot options.no choice.F11 & F12 are normal boot for windows vista boot , beeps when key is pressed, boots as per norm.

Looks like you'll have to change the boot order then. It's no big deal though.

It would have been nice to have had the option to boot from disk just to checkthat my download and burn were ok.before I changed the order. I can always return to status quo I presume if not happy?Should have kept old comp for banking only'

In the rare circumstance that the disk is corrupt, the worst that will happen is that you'll need to take the disc out and reboot.

I want to uninstall Rapport as it appears to be slowing down the comp-it appears to use a huge amount of power, however i get the message "Your computer is infected dont uninstall type stuff." I do of course use all the usual anti virus stuff, firewalls, etc, so whats the real risk?
