    I've been Money Tipped!
My dad recently changed his old phone and I mean old, he had one of the very first mobiles that ever came out, like this...

The woman at the shop said it was a museum piece!!! My dad now has his new mobile phone and is happy with it. Don't know what he got for the trade in but he should have hung onto the old one I reckon. Would have been worth a fortune eventually.

I think that argument has pretty much been exhausted but hey, I'm sure there'll be someone willing to re-visit the old "envirofone v ebay" chestnut and set the ball rolling once again.

So for now it's ....... advantage ash333 (and no, I'm not volunteering to be umpire) :p

    Hmmm.....

As far as I can see, everyone is sending them phones that are REPAIRABLE. Their terms and conditions pretty much state that unless the phone can be repaired, they're not accepting it. I'm pretty sure Envirfone's definition of "recycling" means the phone will be repaired...and then re-sold somewhere else (possibly in another country).

Guess it doesn't really matter if you're getting some cash or vouchers for something that doesn't work or is just lying there, but I think they will be able to make more on the phone by repairing and re-selling it than what everyone's been paid for their model.

Recycling doesn't mean they are throwing the phone away. Why else would Envirofone be able to afford what they do?

Sorry didn't want to be a killjoy or anything...I guess its a win-win situation for both the customer...and the company.

A brief summary for those who've skipped the thread pages directly to here.

Just to clarify, like everything else in this world, you can probably sell it for more on ebay, not just phones. However, many MSE's just don't like or can't be bothered with ebay, paypal fees and 5 day listings. This thread was about for those people who just prefer to post off and forget.

If an ebayer had found a phone in the drawer, they would have already ebayed the phone (probably along with the drawer). I guess if it's in the drawer/loft at home, then the owner felt it wasn't worth anything or not worth the bother.

My first post does mention MoPay and CEX, but the former pays less in most cases and the latter only has a few shops dotted around the country. You can also get cashback when buying new contract phones from mosst places (they usually give you £10 for the phone, £5 for the charger/manuals) but again is dependant upon you getting a new phone.

Envirofone will only accept WORKING phones, not repairable. Shock!, they are in business to resell phones. But they are in business just like ebayers.

You will find older phones are worth much more (I assume this is becuase they are selling the phones to third world countries or the components are worth more as spares). So if you have an old Nokia brick you'll get more for it than an Orange SmartPhone.

They only require the phone but will also take manuals and cables/chargers off your hands.

MESSAGE TO MARTIN. Envirofone have just changed their website and there is the largest advert on their for MoneySavingExpert.Com - it says' come and see what everyone's talking about over at this forum!.

I got £50.00 when I took out an Oange conmtract for my phine, this with six months line rental at half rpice effectively meant three free months of line rental and three half price months. The £50.00 was for any working phone, and all you need is the working phone. You do not need other accessories (though I think you need the battery). The £50.00 gets creditted to your bill.

However, it could even be better. I passed an Orange shop the other day and they hads posters advertising £100 trade-in. If the terms are the same then brilliant.

Even if you do not have a phone, you (may) be able to nuy a cheap pay as you go, use up the credit you normally get with it - then trade it in a short while later.

    excuse the typing
  • Bit of advice please.

Checked eBay and there's a £25+ difference in price for a N7600, but I noticed that on eBay some phones went for 'silly money' (£200+) with the buyer having, guess what, zero feedback. Quite a lot of the winning bids on items at 'sensible prices' were from buyers with zero feedback. I'm guessing a high proportion of these are going to cause the seller some problems.

I use eBay, but only from time to time to buy/sell videogames, and haven't seen this sort of issue. Am I right in thinking there are problems in selling phones on eBay that are worse than the 'usual' issue of an occasional rogue buyer/seller. If so, why do phones attract this sort of problem?

Are there any other issues to watch out for? (and ways to avoid them - other than saying in big letters "Do Not bid if you have zero feedback" - no way to block bidders with zero feedback?)

    Thanks.
