The local council, or the County Council for that area, will have an Environmental Health department.

A formal complaint about the condition / safety of the accommodation will be investigated and if the Authority so decides, a prosecution can follow.

Congratulations on winning the court case, though it's a great pity you and yours had to go through all this.

To preclude the possibility of anyone else ever risking the same experience by dealing with Austin Mockridge who lets out the holiday cottages, Harbours Reach, Chaipel Steps and Primrose Cottage in Polperro, then a complaint to Environmental Health would help everyone.

As to Stillwell's: in light of the Court decision (which seems to have established that the contract was between you and Austin Mockridge, who lets out the holiday cottages Harbours Reach, Chapel Steps and Primrose Cottage in Polperro) you're entitled to ask them if they intend to continue on as agent to someone with a CCJ against them over accommodation quality and Local Authority action against them over planning breaches.

If Stillwell's refuse to respond then of course it's perfectly possible to advise of that on a new thread on MSE.

But hopefully it would never come to that because every such agency is mindful of the commercial value of its reputation.

Hello guys, long time no speak!!

Was just looking through the previous posts regarding all my problems with harbours reach and mr mockridge. it doesnt seem that long ago that i was having to travel down to taunton for this! its nearly a year since i won the judgement and havent been back to cornwall since. the court case took alot of confidence out of me which i hadnt realised and to be honest it has taken me all this time up til now to put it behind me. BUT!!! if I had to do it all again, I WOULD!! definitely.

thanks for everybodies encouragment and advice. i love this website and tell everybody how great you all are in helping and encouragment.

keep up the good work guys and us "little people" will always win!! xxxxxx

Thanks for posting again. I know from personal experience that dealing with people who are the scum of the earth is very draining. These scammers count on the fact that people do not have the energy, confidence, or sometimes health, to fight them. Well done for seeing it through.

MSE is great for exposing dodgy companies. I have had loads of support from people on here. Marleyboy and JackTyler are particularly good at digging up all sorts of info and at least it is in the public domain for others to see. Well done again.

I have been in the SCC court on 4 occasions overthe years and won them all, but it is not easy and does take its toll, but on each occasion I was spurred on by the knowledge that if I won others would not suffer as we had at the hands of crooks and dishonest businesses looking to make a quick buck without being acccountable for their actions.

    Hi
My wife and I are looking for advice on how to deal with the unfortunate fact that we paid £1490.00 for a two week stay in this awful cottage.
I have a catalogue of misleading advertisements both written and on web sites concerning facilities in what you call a luxurious cottage. It starts with an entrance covered in weeds. Includes many photos of the dirt, dead flies and snails on walls, etc. we had to endure sticky dirty floors and surfaces, dirty windows and bed linen that smelt awful. The eating table cracks were filled with decaying food and the table was very dirty, the outside postage stamp balcony where it was impossible to sit at the table – thank goodness because this was covered in more verdigris amongst a weed garden with bags of garden rubbish in. This place was an utter disgrace.

I am retired through ill health and this was a special treat for our daughter her son and my wifes 86 year ol mother, and we all feel cheated.
need real advice on how to get the return of our money and how this man should be stopped.

Did you complain at the time? take pics? leave early? Compile a dossier, contact the other poster on this thread by private message, and ask for their advice with this issue, I am sure they will be able to help.

I would get onto Trading Standards asap. Ring the number on Consumer Direct:

    http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/

They will take some details and a local officer will ring you back. 08454 04 05 06 8am -6.30pm.

Watchdog starts again next week - why not email them your story too?

Thanks for your advice. Since complaing to Mr. Mockridge he has now re-negotiated the price for the cottage and we now feel far happier with the situation.

Mr Mockridge is also running holidays at his home, Middleton Mill Farm

It seems a similar story with the photos telling a different story from reality. Farm is in a complete state, falling down buildings, neglected farm stock ( yes he's trying to be a pig farmer as well ), scrap cars everywhere and lots of unfinished building work everywhere. Unsurprisingly all building has been started without planning permission and is being investigated by Mid Devon Council - TA3 7PT-Enf/11/00025.

His latest venture seems to be placing mobile homes everywhere and renting them out.
