I can't believe people would think this thread is pointless. I had been looking around on MSE for ages and it had made me more aware of my debts and not getting into more debt but it is definitely finding this thread that has made me actually tackle the debts.
The pesky peeps who don't like the PAD peeps are just not cool enough to join us! We rock!
Simple solution really. Those who want to PAD do so. Those who think it's pointless - don't !!
I suppose if someone gets paid regularly the same amount it may appear to be pointless, but there's always the possibility of earning a bit extra some weeks and throwing it at a debt. I'm self-employed so my income is very erratic so PADing is great for me (even though I did a 1p PAD at the start of the month). I try to make it a £1 minimum now but I would do 1p again if it was appropriate.
My PAD for today is a DD gone out for a loan so
£200.840 -

It's not just PAD the other posters see as as pointless, it's the whole DFW forum!
If you're every silly enough to go looking at the other sections (mainly credit card/loans) then you'll see that new posters get nothing but abuse - then the guys on there claim to 'giving them simple honest advice - unlike the hugs and sympathy and ways of getting out of debt that they'd get on DFW'
DFW may offer support but is that not the whole point?? There are a couple of guys there - who will remain nameless - who are just really awful and use every excuse to start a row with the OP or each other just to and then accuse each other of being on the higher horse...amusing to follow I have to admit but really pointless at the same time!!
Anyway, I'll get off my horsie now as it's not big enough as yet to go arguing with the 'big boys'!!
My Pointless exercise for the day is £5.00 which, incidently, is bringing me very close to have paid off £1500 in my first month of PADdin'!! I'm trying to scrape together the remaining amount I need and PAD it by wednesday as my 1st major milestone!!Started PADdin' 13/04/09 paid £7486.66 - CC free 02/11/10

Yes I have seen some of the types of post that you refer to. Sometimes they cxome from people who actually work in finance and come across as pretty judgemental. Although there may be a very few people who pre-plan getting into debt then going bankrupt as sound financial planning (and may deserve some sort of rollocking), IMO this is very unusual. Indeed, my own situation may require BR one day if something else unexpected goes wrong. However, I do intend to have all unsecured debts repaid by the next Olympics and my mortgage repaid by January 2019 The more judgemental people seem to be those who have never been in a financial mess so may not know how it feels.
Taking the view that nearly everybody gets into such debt unintentionally, how they got to that point is only relevant if they wish to learn lessons from it.0
