Also i suffer from PCOS (polly cystic ovarian syndrome) and my medication for it (mainly birth control for periods) are changed all the time some times making me more hungry some times making me feel to bloated to eat.

My DD has just been diagnosed with PCOS:(

She has gained a lot of weight in the past year or two & has horrendous periods.
She has been prescribed diabetic medication to help with the hormones (shes not diabetic).

She's going to see them tonight about the pill or whatever to help, she's getting her implant removed.

Chin up Jess, your doing the right thing, don't be so down on yourself:grouphug:

    Hello everybody

Hope you don't mind me joining you on this thread.

Have just come back from holiday and seriously need to lose about 2 stone (didn't put it all on in my fortnight's holiday ). Having dabbled with WW over the past year or so without much success I have decided to give SW a go.

I can't start classes until September but want to get into the habit now so have downloaded the 'original' sample menu from the SW website. I just have a couple of questions if you don't mind:-

    1) It says on the plan between 5 and 15 syns per day - how do I know
how many I should have ? Have 15 to start - you should still lose weight. If it's not coming off at a steady rate, drop the syns to 10

    2) Is there a list of syn values available online or do I have to get that
from a class? This comes from class or you could buy the Food Directory from the website or get someone to buy it from group for you.

    3) My DD (aged just 16) wants to do this with me - do you know if she
qualifies for the 'free' child place if she accompanies me at class? Sorry, to go free she needs to be 11 - 15 years old

    4) There is so much food on the list, how do you manage to fit it all in in
one day :confused:This is the best part - yum! Just eat until you're full, mainly free foods, but do try hard to get your healthy extras in as they're important for your health

And other information you think may be helpful would be gratefully received

    Thanks

Have answered your questions in red above - hope that helps :)

It's not on the list for HEAs so shouldn't really be used as one. Depending on which one you mean, it's quite low in syns so if I were you I'd syn it. The mature cheese is 4 syns per 28gms, the white and Mozzerella are 4½ syns per 28gms and the slices are all 3 syns each.
    HTH

Isn't it just 42gs as per low-fat cheddar?

All the different cheese brands aren't listed, its just low-fat cheddar in the SW book?

junior_j - my daughter had PCOS but since losing 5 stones with SW she has been told she no longer has it :j

Amanda65 - please don't be tempted to buy books through eBay - the prices on there are a rip-off. If you want books and you know someone who goes to a group, ask them to buy them for you. Your DD will still be able to benefit from the eating plan since it's likely that you do the cooking at home (just going by my own DDs at that age, lol). In fact, the whole family can benefit since it's normal, healthy, nutritious food you will be serving.

If the Low Low is simply low-fat Cheddar, then probably. I just wanted to clarify that it has the same calcium content as the listed cheeses do.

Can it really go? Or is it just managed?

My DD has always had awful periods, lasting weeks rather than days. She's been like that since she started 10 years ago & was perscribed the pill to lesson them, but it didn't help much.

It was me that took her down the doctors & suggested she was tested for PCOS.

Makes me wonder has she had it the past 10 years (when shes been having trouble) or the past two when shes put on weight?

Well, to be honest I'm not sure. DD1 was diagnosed when she couldn't get pregnant, They tried to conceive for 5 years, during which time she was advised to lose weight and she succeeded (beautifully). When she went for her 6 monthly fertility-type check-up, she was already 5 months pregnant and, because her periods had been all over the place with the PCOS, she hadn't realised.

She did used to suffer agonising periods, which sometimes lasted a couple of weeks and sometimes didn't appear at all. Since the baby was born (11 months ago now) her periods have regulated themselves and aren't nearly as painful.

The nurse said that the weight loss could have done the trick, but equally the pregnancy could be the reason, so you pays your money and takes your choice it seems - not recommending your DD gets pregnant to see if it works though (unless she wants to of course) :D

Thanks for the tip. I will have a look at teh website. Is there anything that it is worthwhile not buying bearing in mind I am going to class in a couple of weeks? I don't want to double up on something that I am getting as part of a joining pack
  • No you're not dim, it's just that as a SW Consultant, I have to follow the rules as far as HEs are concerned. I understand that you might have expected to be able to have it as a HE but since it's not listed (yet) I would stick with what is and keep this as an extra you could syn if you wanted more.

You can have 42gms of many of the low fat cheeses, including Feta and Mozzarella, so it could be that the Low Low is included, it's just not listed yet. Does it tell you anywhere how many calories it has and the % of calcium. SW base the HEs on the amount of calcium for the As and the fibre in the Bs.

By the way, are you aware that you can have cheese as a HEB as well on the Green and EE plan? So, in theory, you could have all 4 of your HEs (on the Green plan) as cheese - you'll be growing whiskers and a tail next :D

Arh thanks I have used cheeses as an A & B before yum yum I could live on the stuff honestly I could :T

The info on the back of the Low Low cheese per 30g (it does also quote the amount per 100g but I thought this easier) is:
    Calories 90.6
    Fat 6.6g
    Saturates 4.1g
    Salt 0.57g

Fingers crossed for having more lol ;)

Seriously? I think that's quite dangerous. Check the explanation in para 7 here http://www.lowcarb.ca/articlesb/article305.html

I was diagnosed with PCOS about 8 years ago. I cured it by cutting out carbs like rice and bread and pasta and spuds and anything with flour and or sugar in it (including fruit). I never took any medication for it. Not had my fertility tested but I don't have any PCOS symptoms anymore (and I lost weight too).

There's a low carb thread in the health and beauty forum and several people in there have found it helps with both weightloss and PCOS. Please have a read of it - a low fat diet and diabetic meds may be the worst thing she can do :(
