Phil...I 'personally' feel the induction of atkins saying NO fruit etc for me is too restrictive. I aim at 20 carbs-BUT include fruit, yoghurt, etc. As an example-tonight-100gm mixed berries (aldi-£1-20-500gm!) with 100gm full fat lidl yoghurt-YUM-sprinkle of sweetener (ALLWAYS use sucrolose-£1 at aldi-yellow tub)-tastes as good as sugar! Phill-you don't need to be as anal as me with weighing things-just think good handfull & 4 tablespoons full fat yoghurt! 8.2 gms carbs! Dinner tonight was King prawns in homemade sauce (full fat mayo, tsp tomato sauce, lea & perrins, chilli sauce) on rocket with spring onions & tomatos.
Another thing thats hard to get your head round is that FULL FAT is ok! Much tastier...you won't feel hungry. So...if you choose to stick to 20 ish carbs a day (& PHIL-I still drink neat vodka...& I've lost 6 pounds in 11 days-if you drink it just 'stalls' the process-but neat spirits & low cal mixers are nearly zero carb-dry wines ok-beer/cider-full of carbs).
Phil-look back at some of the posts regarding IRWINS 7 SEEDED WHITE BREAD-this is only 6 carbs a slice-so an open sandwich is just 6 carbs-closed just 12! Ask your local Tesco to order it-mine did! Especially if you don't want to try & make it yourself. As mentioned...RYVITA with sesame seeds is only 5-8 gms/slice too. It does NOT have to be expensive either....a lot of the meats, fish etc can be bought cheaply at places like aldi etc.
I'll bet if i didn't drink as much vodka I'd be losing quicker...& I'm never hungry! I also eat nuts (almonds very low carb) as a snack.0 -
phil, it's easy, just think meat, dairy, green veg and salad. but you have to keep your eye on portions, i would suggest you weigh your meat/dairy servings to begin with to get an idea of the ideal sized portion. many people don't do well on LC because they assume eating until satisfied means stuff your face, protein makes you satisfied very easily, just 4oz meat and green veg is filling. eating just 0 carb protein(meat), oil and green veg for a few days will get you into ketosis faster.
me and OH just had our xmas dinner- duck! so yummy and have left overs for tomorrowhe is playing on his new kinect (because i'm such a good girlfriend with an eye for bargains and he did get me two tom ford perfumes!) now and i'm just watching the xmas lights war on 4od! very funny.

I like the looks of that book newleaf. My wife is planning on doing this with me. Is this book good for her to?
The principles of low carbing are the same for both men and women, so yes the book will be of use to your wife too. The fitness advice I believe is geared specifically to men.
He is very easy to read and gives a good explanation of the science stuff. I especially like the fact that he is British rather than American, so uses more easily understood terminology.
His blog is worth following too: http://www.drbriffa.com/blog/Official DFW Nerd No 096 - Proud to have dealt with my debt!0 -

Beanrua, don't worry about them. You have those size 10 jeans
Planning for to-morrow evening when my daughter and her partner come home for Xmas. That means 4 offspring and their Oh's and me and him =10. All sorts ie veggies, lc'ers etc etc. so .... going to cut rounds of toasted lc bread , with cream cheese and chili flakes, tnx pp, lots of cheeses and oatcakes, veggie sausages with melted cheese - cut into small portions, king prawns in lidl yoghurt and paprika, lovely thick ham, egg mayonnaise, veggie chicken fillets cut into strips with chili sauce, as well as cocktail sausages and sausage rolls - followed with lidl yoghurt and berries. Maybe think of a few other things as I go along.
Welcome Phil - lots and lots of great easy recipes at start of this thread - that's what really got me going on this lc way of eating and I really love all the creamy sauce and cauliflower and broccoli cheese things etc.
Lcarbing makes a lot of sense to me and I love it. Enjoy!!!!
Tnx for the links newleaf.Treat the Earth well,It was not given to you by your parents,It was loaned to you by your children.Masai proverb0 -

Yup-seen carb counter on Atkins. I also have collins gem-which seems on some things WAY OUT! I'm using the uk low carbs one.
This is why i'm unsure of carbs in the bread recipe.
I remember buying coriander at ridiculously low prices in ethnic shop too. Cant believe the linseed price, will def have to stock up!
Very tired today, second night in a row we've been kept awake with shouting and banging.
They used to be very noisy but have been quieter of late.. payback when the brats are back in school, lets see how they like being tired then.
They left their dog out barking all night in the cold a few weeks ago when they failed to come home.. thoughtless @rseh*les0 -

Thoughtless, thoughtless, thoughtless - I wish I could shut them up for you mazzers - nobody should have to put up with that - I'm sure they wouldn't. Hugs!
I have banged the wall, put music on loud early as payback, even gone around there asking nicely but they are oblivious or just plain selfish.
Had an argument recently and threatened with police and council and it was quieter.
Hopefully it is just party time and wont continue.
I feel sorry for the poor lovely dog, a chocolate lab who is on his own in the garden most of the time
Woke early as i have lots to do and the only day left to do it.
First job will be the leaning tower of ironing
Then i have to clear all the washing and clutter that seems to appear from nowhere.
But first... a coffee or three0 -
Thanks all. Very helpful thread and lovely comments. I do not eat much fruit at all although do like berries but thats about it. Dont eat much veg or salad either except carrots and tomatoes. I am a bit of a fussy eater I guess. Am on holiday in January and have loads of these dreaded cambridge shakes left so will finish these and start low carb late Jan.0

Honestly Phil-will be the best thing you've done! Why not ditch shakes New years Eve & start new years day???!
Easy-even if you don't like cooking!
Example menu for today....
Breakfast-trimmed bacon dry fried
2 eggs fried with some mayo & chilli sauce on top
80 gm (about 3 tablespoons- or 1/5 normal sized tin) REDUCED SUGAR Aldi beans.
Cofee with cream & sweetener
Lunch-I'll have today 2 thin slices of flax bread (easy recipe-only 0.7gms carb or less a thin slice) with ham/cheese or pate. Handfull of cherry tomato on side with olive oil & dried herbs. Or-if I don;t fancy flaxbread will have tinned tuna + mayo (or on its own)+ tomato.
Either-Dinner-ROSS frozen fish portion in butter sauce + broccoli & sprouts (frozen-nuke for 7 mins-add butter!)....
Or Steak/pork chops with Jerk seasoning + same veg + full fat greek yoghurt+frozen berries (fish sauce has a bit more carbs so thats why can have fruit with the steak/chop).
So phil-even if you're not a great cook it can be quick/easy & cheap. Notice on both menus eith 4 or 5 out of 5 for government '5 a day' for fruit & veg (baked beans-broccoli/sprouts/tomato/raspberry).
How anyone can say this is unhealthy is beyond me!
The other thing phil....do you/gf like chillis & curries? As I said I know you're both not supercooks but a couple of these trebled up in slow cooker-freeze in bags & microwave-hey presto instant cheap meal! Add some veg & jobs a good un. If you need more advice feel free to post on here or pm me.
My GF has said my skin looks healthier...she reckons my bags under the eyes (wasn't aware i really had any??!) have gone & the slight wrinkles around my eyes/forehead have vanished??! I must say the flax bread is an excellent source of fibre & overall this diet has made my mood better-no sleepiness in the day at all.0 -
Any ideas anyone? Soya milk?? What sort of grains? Oats/mixture with flax?0
