this is the odd thing i don't get bad breath or sluggishness

its when i train, especially cardio

i can smell and taste acetone (nail polish remover) and its a strong smell, very strong by the end, its not noticable during the day when I am not exercising (stops after about 30 mins of training)

it is very hard to find good science on ketosis, there's a lot of speculation and rumour on the web about it which makes it confusing.

This bit from wiki seams to describe what is happening, I have drained my carb store (even thou i eat 165g of crabs a day now) and I am in fat burning mode.

When glycogen stores are not available in the cells, fat (triacylglycerol) is cleaved to give 3 fatty acid chains and 1 glycerollipolysis. Most of the body is able to utilize fatty acids as an alternative source of energy in a process called beta-oxidation. One of the products of beta-oxidation is acetyl-CoA, which can be further used in the Krebs cycle. During prolonged fasting or starvation, acetyl-CoA in the liver is used to produce ketone bodies instead, leading to a state of ketosis. molecule in a process called
During starvation or a long physical training session, the body starts utilizing fatty acids instead of glucose. The brain cannot use fatty acids for energy because the fatty acids cannot cross the blood-brain barrier. However, the ketone bodies produced in the liver can cross the blood-brain barrier. In the brain, these ketone bodies are then incorporated into acetyl-CoA and used in the Krebs cycle.
Excess ketone bodies will slowly decarboxylate into acetone. Acetone is excreted in the breath and urine.

    "Ketostix" ~ £5 for 50 from [STRIKE]Boots[/STRIKE] chemist :)
They're little 'litmus paper' kinda things, which you either wee on, or dip in your fresh wee. The little test area on the end of the long strip changes colour if you're in ketosis, from a pale lilac to a dark purple depending how 'deep' into ketosis you are..

I've just finished a bowl of 'home made' museli! :A A couple of dessert spoonfuls of oats, ~ds of linseed, sprinkling of some 'mixed seeds' (sunflower, linseed probably, pumpkin, sesame.. mixed long ago: rarely use! :o), about 4 little hazlenuts which I chopped a bit, sprinkling of walnut pieces, erm... oh and some currants and sultanas (my boys seem to have gone off those and only like the raisins now for some odd reason..). Dollop of Greek yoghurt (fatty one from when I was finding Atkins so easy :rotfl::doh:).
Sounds a lot, but it was only a small amount: just under half a bowl. Was yummy, and I'm keen to tweak it and get us all eating it. Eldest should be a breeze, littly will be.. a challenge, and OH will like it I think.. Will get low fat natural yoghurt next time. Want some bran and flax to mix into the oats.. excitiing stuff! (no I don't get out [STRIKE]much[/STRIKE] ))

Sorry for the ramble..... oh.. you're all asleep...

oats are high in carbs and have decent protein

rolled oats thou are the lowest GI grain so the carb is slow release

Eric, this concerns me. I gather you've been doing this a while and get the impression you know what you're talking about. I, on the other hand, am rather new to this, so forgive me if I'm barking up the wrong tree, but..
Nail polish remover doesn't smell of ammonia. It smells of acetone.
Ammonia is quite a different smell: you're more likely to have come across it in cleaning products.

The reason I point out this difference is this (possibly wrong) post I just stumbled across which suggests that if you smell of ammonia you're burning protein and not fat.......
    (love danaofdoom's reply! lol)

Just wanted to let you know, since you're obviously working very hard on all this (and put some of us to shame). I'd be interested in your thoughts/findings.

P.S: Hope I am barking up the wrong tree! (or you're just bad at identifying smells :p)

its acetone smell 100%, like nail varnish remover, which can smell like ammonia apparently

ive not made a habit of smelling gases etc :p

its good to know that I can eat a moderate amount of carb but never fill up my body store and go pretty quickly into fat burning mode when i work out

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker I've been Money Tipped!
Hi all! I've been reading this thread for a wee while, so thought I'd say hiya!

I've been doing the idiot proof diet since March and have lost 40lbs so far. Still have 38lbs to go, but hoping to get there by Christmas.:D

Can't believe the food I get to eat and still lose weight! It's amazing! Wish I'd tried low carb long ago!
  • Hi, newbie on this thread, not the site as a whole.
I'm currently day 4 of a 14 day low carb diet called the royal marine commando diet (I'm not sure about the name).
I would say I'm in the ketosis stage as I'm very sluggish, tired, vague headaches and of course the horrible taste in my mouth! Keep up the good work everyone and I'll let you know how I got on. So far I have stuck religiously to it.

id be surpised if RM commando's ate low carb as there some of the few people that are active enough to justify a high carb diet
