Back home from travels (apart from tomorrow when it's up to Scotland and back) and very weary. Zoomed into Wetherby to pick up another packet of chicken thighs and got drumsticks instead, and some cheese. Won't be able to do a proper shop until Tuesday.
More water is definitely the way forward, difficult when driving or on a packed train (the one I was on on Friday ran out of the stuff after an hour but we were stuck at Durham for an hour and a half and then went back to Newcastle :eek:) but the effort is worth it.

Not sure that I like drumsticks as much as thighs, too much bone and sinew for comfortable eating, however got a packet of them to get through. Had a drumstick and some cheese, glass of water, cup of tea and some supplements.
Have put some pepperamis in the car (again) and stocked up on water in the boot too so no excuses for not having LC food. Travelling quite a bit again today and later on in the week.

I'm glad you mentioned taking your supplements as I'd forgotten mine this morning. I only started taking them last week so I'm not quite in a routine yet. I actually do feel better for taking them, I was feeling really bleurgh & thought I'd give them a try, as recommended by the IPD book.
Gers, why do you say water is the way forward?? Have you noticed a big difference in weight, how you feel, how you look?? Just curious, I've been making a conscious effort to drink more water as well but haven't noticed anything apart from more frequent trips to the loo!! :rotfl:
I've just had 2 lc buttered crispbreads with 2 fried eggs for my brekkie with lots of water (& my supplements) so feel nicely full now.

A low-carb diet can help you lose weight because it turns on fat-burning processes, known as "dietary ketosis." These ketones are also thought to have an appetite suppressant effect.
However, Pasteur says that when large amounts of ketones are produced, your body can become quickly dehydrated -- another problem faced by those on a low-carb diet.
The solution: Drink more water.
"The lower your carb intake, the greater your risk of dehydration and subsequently the greater your need for water," says Pasteur. Most low-carb diet experts suggest drinking at least 2 quarts of water daily.
In addition to keeping you adequately hydrated -- which can also help alleviate constipation -- drinking lots of water can also help offset still another low-carb diet problem: bad breath. The ketones produced during the diet can lead to what is sometimes described as a fruity odor although it is often described as having an almost "chemical" odor similar to acetone or nail polish remover.
Now if you're thinking you'll just handle the problem by brushing and flossing a little more often, guess again. Since the breath odor is coming from metabolic changes and not necessarily a dental-related condition, traditional breath products are not likely to provide long-lasting relief. On the other hand drinking more water intake can do the trick.

I don't just want too, I have to lose weight, I have arthritis in my right hip and both knees, I need to lose 4 stone.
Several people have told me about a low carb diet, which sounds fine, except what do you do if you are cooking spag bol, what do you have in place of the spag, likewise I have porridge and 1 slice of wholemeal toast and coffee for breakfast....what do I replace the toast with, are you not allowed to eat any carbs, or just a few...help!!!!!!
We are both pensioners and do not have a lot of money to throw about. I have cut out the mid afternoon, cake, just have a cup of tea. I do buy or grow quite a bit of fruit and vegetable, so plenty of fresh fruit etc........but we have pasta a couple of times a week. usually with salad or a baked potato........I cannot afford to join a slimming club, to be honest I find those clubs very boring......I have a pair of weightwatcher scales which is handy. I was 13st 8 before we moved, having weighed myself recently I seem to have lost a stone.......Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.0 -
Csarina Yes a LC does shift the weight quickly I am just back on it, however, "it ain't cheap". Some carbs can be added back in eventually, but it is mainly Proteins (meat, fish, nuts, etc) Fats, and a odd bit of non carb veg. http://www.atkins.com
may help you see more, but my suggestion is for cost reasons, go on the Calorie counting route.
It is carp I know as really what you have to do is to eat less, or exercise more - hard with arthritis. You seem to have lost a stone, well that is a very good start, but I would drop the toast just have the porrage, reduce the amount of pasta, smaller baked potatoes, etc., replace any sugar with sweeteners, and learn to ignore being hungry. Drinking loads of water can help the hunger pangs.
One other thing is don't confuse Healthy Options as non fattening, while brown bread is supposed to be bettter for you, it has just as many calories as white, also check out the calories in fruit/veg and weigh them, guessing doesn't work.

Hi everyone
Hope you don't mind me joining in, and answering Csarina, but know her from the OS daily. As I said I am back on LC, Atkins version really, but struggling a little as out in Spain for the next 6-7 weeks, hard I know, but no such things as Atkins bars out here, and due to the heat the fruit is ahead of the UK, so no Strawberries and Raspberries about, loads of peaches, nectorines, apricots, melons, and struggling to find something for a change. I do have a sweet tooth, and trying to manage onthe sugar free jellies, after my main meal, but some fruit with it would be nice.
What about breakfasts, as you can imagine it is pretty hot, and I do not always feel like a cooked breakfasts, any other suggestions?

Started well today :
Brunch ~ 2 good quality bangers, two rashers and scrambled egg.
Late lunch ~ salad, cheese and ham.
Dinner ~ salad with chicken balti.
Blew it because I couldn't say no to yesterdays left over crumble, but it's gone now, so at least tomorrow will see me not tempted by it.
How do I stand with yoghurt, thought I mnight have a go at making my own and adding fruit?I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Have a read of the links on the first post of this very long thread - a lot is explained really early on. Yes, it costs more to eat low carb but it's more filling than low calorie, and because of the fat content more satisfying too. I returned to LC fully just last week (after being ill and then recovering since April) and within 2 days my bloating had gone. Now I'm looking forward to my clothes being looser and me becoming smaller.
I struggled for years with low calorie/low fat diets and never lost the weight, this one suits me perfectly both emotionally and physically. Once the sugar and carb addiction has been overcome it's surprisingly easy, but cost must be a factor to consider too.

I'm no expert - others around here are -but the most beneficial yoghurt seems to be the Lidl 10% fat Greek one, it's very low carb and the fat is essential. Under £2.00 for a large bucket of the stuff. Very creamy, very tasty and perfect with berries/seeds. Even though I'm not a fan of yoghurt generally I did eat this for a while and it's really filling. Just don't like yoghurt... :eek:0
