  • Morning all :hello:

Hi fruity, what on earth are green smoothies?! Veggie smoothies?? Will have to google

Yep, they are veggie juices and smoothies, I am trying to juice as wellllll as low carbing (sorry I've got a sticky el) so am having celery and lettuce juice before bed, and sometimes a green juice with avocado instead of lunch. the celery and lettuce one needs a small apple juiced with it to make it taste better!

I'm drinking the celery and lettuce for its sleeping help. We are trying to break the habit of a glass or two of wine every night and I'm not sleeping so well. Even tried lavender oil on the soles of my feet last night (it worked).

Hello everyone  just found you all this morning and had a quick flick through the last bit of the thread.

    You all seem so friendly.

I have just started the Atkins diet, I am desperate to loose a couple of stone before summer. was always thin until I gave up smoking and it's crept up and up since then! also been diagnosed with polysystic Ovary syndrome and advised that a low carb diet is the recommended way to go.

    So atkins it is.

I have ordered the book but while I wait for it to get here, I have been reading up online and know that for the first 2 weeks I am only allowed 20g per day of carbs .

I was also told about a recipe book by Karen Barnaby here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1405087935/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

I have ordered the book because I really want to stick to this diet and need all the help I can get.

I joined the verity discussion board but tbh it's very slow moving and not as friendly as here so decided to ask if I could join in with your discussion.

I also wanted to see if any of you know about polyols?? I am very confused about this... I saw some atkins bars in boots and some diabetic choc in Thorntons, looked at the ingredient list and see that theres no sugar (fab) but where the carb amount is, there is polyols which are HIGH??? it wouldn't make sense for atkins to sell bars high in carbs so what the heck are these polyols? does anyone eat these products and could possibly advise me?

So I have about 2 stone to loose. I lost 7.5pounds on the cabbage soup diet a couple of weeks ago but it was so hard I couldn't keep it up and then researched the low carb/atkins diet and recon it's alot easier than just eating fruit one day, veg the next, just bananas on a thursday etc. etc. so began on Tuesday. I regained 3 pounds and have now lost another 1.5 so I am at 6pounds lost in total (1 week cabbage soup diet, one week eating normal and 2 day's on the atkins!).

  • I'm sure you'll find it a lot more palatable than the cabbage soup diet, there's so many tasty recipes out there, people have got very creative following low-carb.

IMHO I wouldn't worry about Polyols at the moment (they are sugar alcohols by the way and are supposed not to have an impact on blood sugar or insulin although they affect people differently) and steer away from 'fake foods' such as the Atkins Bars. Yes they say to eat them on the Atkins diet but that's just big business - make a buck where you can. Plus you are really aiming to reduce cravings for 'sugary' foods in general.

Another disadvantage of polyols is that they give you terribly windy, rumbly guts and often diarrhoea (you can test this with a Thornton's Diabetic Fudge Bar if you like LOL!).

If you stick to simple unprocessed foods to kick start you for the 2 weeks induction you won't go far wrong. If you're losing weight well, maybe you can start to up the carbs slightly or introduce the odd convenience item. You can eat a lot for your 20g of carbs if you plan it out. Make sure you don't eat all your carb allowance in one go as you're trying to stay under the insulin triggering radar (which is around 9-10 carbs in one meal/snack, I believe) Drink at least 3-4 litres of water a day and eat lots of (low-carb) veg!!

    Best of luck!

I think you can do them where you insert hte tube yourself and they leave you alone. Sounds much more dignifed that way.

Oh I'm not sure if I could do that tbh. It would be like trying to punch yourself in the eye, you just wouldn't be able to....self preservation would kick in. :rotfl:

Alias, i had a cat, only recently died

Have you researched it? if so, how much does it cost?

Oh crap, I'm sorry mazzers. :o

Haven't researched anything, only just started to bump my gums about it really. (Princess Di had a small butt though.) :D

Diamonds..... we are very friendly here. In fact I would go as far as to say this is one of the friendliest places you can be on MSE. Hope you feel at home here soon. :)

Right.....serious moan coming up. I don't know if any of you remember this...

Buy Tesco Organic peanuts....49p for 100g bag....5.4g carbs per bag, lowest I've found so far. There's hardly any salt in them so you can then get an Atkins bar of chocolate, melt it and mix it with the peanuts to make your own chocolate peanuts.

Weather's cold today girls isn't it?

    :rotfl:

Well I've just been in Tesco today and went to buy a bag....and the carb content is now listed at 17 g for the same bag!!!!!!!!! <lots of them and a few of these >

No bloody wonder I never lost weight on the days I had nuts! The original bags must have been an error.

AND, the Tesco low carb shakes I used to buy...are no longer. They are now some other slimming shake with less fat and loads more carbs. Probably just as well mind, I drank too many of them.

The bit that worries me is, what if you can't hold it in when all the water's in there? :rotfl::eek:

I'm more worried about wanting to poop when the tube goes in. :o:D

Thanks ever so much for your reply, i need as much help as I can get... the thorntons stuff I talked about is so tempting just because I am really badly craving sugar and I just thought sucking on a fruit drop or nibbling a bit of their toffee might help alot, I was just wondering if the polyols would affect the carb intake. I know what you mean about rumbling tummy etc. as I am also taking metformin which tends to make me rumble a bit :o

I read earlier on the thread people talked about a crispbread that was bought from H&B, they sound very tempting as it would cheer up my cheese no end :) !!

I am tending to have omelette for a late breakfast and then a chicken salad for tea or some such meat and veg dish.. it's not too bad at the mo anyway., I'm not missing bread yet. I did see a website called low carb megastore which has pasta substitute/bread and other bits and pieces.. http://www.lowcarbmegastore.com/zero-carb-foods have any of you tried their products? I am tempted by the bread and pasta and also the sweets lol.

:rotfl::oApparently it's £40-£75. The bit that worries me is, what if you can't hold it in when all the water's in there? :rotfl::eek:

Didnt think you had to hold it in, thats an enema, thought it went in, swirled around a bit, and came back out ??

Diamonds, the polyols stalled me, i used to have the lollies from the chemist.
I prefer raspberries and yogurt for my sweet tooth now.

Very informative CWR, i didnt realise it was under 9-10g per meal.

Diamonds, i've got a link to a great recipe for lc bread but the sit is down for maintenance, remind me and i'll post it when its back up.
Here is a pic of the bread i made from the recipe, its very much like wholemeal, freezes well, but doesn't toast too well.
