Grief - a list of disasters: cut/skint knuckles; big cats; small mice; lack of coffee and so on. Hope it's all better soon.

I am having coffee with cream in preference to tea with milk. Tried to have black tea and couldn't do it, mind you only tried the once but seeing as how I'm not in the jungle I stopped trying. Someone said (here) that coffee stalled their weight loss but I don't think it's happening to me and I am enjoying the cream bit. Stops me having out of season fresh berries (which aren't that nice) and pouring on too much.

As for veg - reckon I now am having, at the most, 3 portions so still not enough. I've now bought some frozen cauli to help add to it - I love mashed cauli but found that it went off very soon, stunk the fridge/house out and went a long long way!

Productive day yesterday :j and, fingers crossed, another one today. Got to break off work briefly in the afternoon to get some hairs on my chin zapped by laser. I used to have it done regularly and was winning the war but (for some reason) stopped and am now losing it. Started to pluck which is deadly  so back on track with the regime.

Not had breakfast yet (just drinking coconut oil with my coffee) but the usual, and only salt of the day BTW, and then the last of the mincey thing. Will make more of it as I got some Aberdeen Angus beef mince from the farm shop the other day so that should be extra lovely.

I've been reading a book by a bloke called Michael Neill (about changing your life/way of living etc) and he talks cleverly about procrastination, at some length. The bit which I keep coming back to is this. One of the obstacles to starting to change whatever it is that we want to change is 'overcoming inertia'. He basically outlines that we are not lazy or weakwilled when trying to start a new programme/diet/saving scheme but are bound by the laws of physics - Newton's First Law 'A body persists in a state of rest or of uniform motion unless acted upon by an external force'.

So, we have to use different strategies to overcome interia and willpower isn't always the best tool! He suggests using one of the following:

    Start small
    - little steps: one walk round the local street and back; saving only £5.00 a month. Nothing overwhelming or too taxing (in first gear I suppose and getting use to the movement?)

Start big - making big changes and going for the target head on; walking round 2 or 3 streets immediately or saving a much larger amount each month. Something powerful and immediately challenging (in top gear, revving up and heading for the end with a huge whoosh?)

Time boxes - 'a period of time you oput round a project or a goal with a definte beginning and a definite end, regardless of whether the project/goal is complete'. Could be a time box for exercise, a diet or (love this) a new attitude - from 15 minutes for the walk to 1 hour for the attitude or 3 months for the diet.

To overcome inertia and creating momentum he suggests having Action Buddies - and that's exactly what we are! Telling each other what we've accomplished yesterday and what we hope to accomplish tomorrow.

Sorry to waffle on... it just made such sense to me and keeps me positive, or helps to! Pollyana is back.... :p

Have a good LC day folks.

I wonder about the salt in my diet too. Although I cook from scratch mostly and do not sprinkle it, I too eat a lot of cheese and frankfurters. When I use bacon in the stew or for crisps I find I have to soak n boil it a bit first as otherwise it's a bit too salty for me. Maybe I worry too much :rotfl:

Trying to up the veg, reckon I get about 3 portions on a regular day.

Mercy and Sweets (why is the quoting thing only taking bits of the post I'm answering I wonder?) I'm not sure you need to worry about salt. I've read about half of the Diet Delusion and, from memory, it said carbs are the only reason we retain salt - without carbs our body does the job as it should and flushes it out - which stops it being held in and retaining water and thus upping blood pressure which is why people worry about salt (or something like that).

Also that the whole eat 5 portions of veg is not necessary either - Eskimos live on meat only and are fine! Mind you I spose it depends what that meat eats as to what vitamins it contains, but given most of us are pill popping vitamins for England I'm guessing its not a problem. I certainly eat very little veg and don't worry about it.

Where is Ted when you need him? Has anybody heard from him by the way?

When i joined that 'fitday' food calculator, it stated that my salt was far too high, i did mention at the time, i think it was you that mentioned about the salty butter, bacon, ham and cheese.
I dont eat enough veg when lcing either.

mazzers, yes I seem to remember saying that & telling you off for having salted butter!! :o Pot calling kettle black!! :o
The [STRIKE]excuses[/STRIKE] reasons I've been having salted butter are a) it was on offer, and b) the one I was buying (Anchor organic) is made from grass-fed cow's milk & I read somewhere that that was better for you
Anyway, tis no longer on offer so will be buying unsalted from now on.
The reason I don't eat much bacon or ham is because of the salt issue, but, I'm sure my garlic sausage is just as bad. Also, the low-carb crispbreads I eat taste quite salty.

As regards the veg, we all seem to be struggling with our 5-a-day. I think I average 3-4 portions a day?? I need to up that because I'm not eating any fruit, whereas I know at least some of you peeps are.

So, too much salt & not enough veg?!

Maybe I'm just worrying for worries sake :o
  • HanSpan, thanks for that info :T

I've never read the Diet Delusion book but I'm thinking maybe I should. Think I've read links to it before, probably from Ted's posts.
Yes, I think this thread misses him, he was a mine of information & talked a lot of sense.

  • Morning everyone :santa2:

Did the wii fit bodytest this morning & I've lost a lb & now have 3lbs to reach my goal.
Was actually feeling a bit fed up beforehand, & felt like eating bread & chocolate (!) but that's given me a bit of a boost.

    Menu for today:
    B - 2 egg cheese & mushroom omelette
    L - 2 low-carb crispbreads with butter & cheese, garlic sausage
    D - roast beef with cauli/green beans/mush cheesiness

Don't feel so bad about my menu after reading HanSpan's post.

Have a good day everyone, tis lovely & sunny here this morning :santa2:

    Congrats!

I haven't got a wii but quite fancy the wii fit. It seems its going to cost rather a lot though - so is it worth it just for the fit bit? I do absolutely NO exercise and most of the purchases I've made in this arena end up gathering dust (actually all). Some of the problem is having such a tiny house (excuses excuses) that means leaving an excercise gadget out is impractical so the wii is tempting as it appears to take pretty much no room. What I'd really like is a treadmill as - having gone to the gym for a while mumble years ago - that was the only thing I didn't mind (enjoy is taking it waaay too far) but there's no way I can fit one, and if I buy a fold up one that's how it will remain - folded up!

Last night we went to a concert and the escalators at Angel Islington were out so I had to walk up a LOT of stairs and thought I might die before I got to the top. I really must do something, so who has a wii and what's the excercise bit like?

  • Hello my action/inertia buddies!

Got the lurgy today (cough, splutter) so everyone stand back while reading this. Weighed myself this morning :eek::eek: but have decided to be glass half full and think of it as the heaviest I will be rather than get depressed about it. :p

Now, why is it that talk of chin zapping gives me the giggles? Being a PCOS girl I'm no stranger to the tweezers. My fear is to wake up one morning looking like Chewbacca.

Sweet - I am trying to up my veg intake too. Being veggie this should be easy but I'm more of a cake-etarian ;) . I've been sneaking baby spinach into my omlettes (tops up the iron) but I'd rather avoid all veg if I could - it just lurks in a sinister way. Really detest cauli -bleugh - but any other tips to make me eat more veg would be gratefully received.
