Ted, I did actually think I was taking the 5000iu that you recommend but when i checked the bottle a month ago i spotted that i was only taking half of that! I didn't actually bother changing the dose because a) Dr Oz from the Oprah Winfrey show recommends 1000iu (do i remember the official us recommendation being 400iu?) and b) i decided that as i was taking nothing before i was better off than i had been.....
My viewpoint is the NATURAL levels that allows human breast milk to flow replete with D3, the natural level the human body attains and maintains living naked outdoors and the level that achieve least chronic disease incidence are what our human DNA evolved to work best with. I believe in evolution and that the evolutionary advantage that enabled survival of pale skinned individuals at latitude 50 was related to the storage of D3 to permit winter survival and fertility in spring and as D3 storage in the human body only becomes significant above 125nmol/l 50ng we have to regard that as the natural lowest safe level for humans at this latitude.
The amounts we need at this latitude will indeed be somewhat higher than at latitude 40 and in countries where vitamin d food fortification is practiced. We have fewer days of sunshine annually and fewer hours UVB daily than they do in the USA. While it may have been theoretically possible last week to lay naked in the sun at midday in the UK to boost vitamin d intake, but where I was it was far too cold and windy to even consider it. Similarly we don't have access to vitamin d fortified milk/cereals that happens in the USA.
If you look at this study you see the average levels of study participants late October started ata higher level than UK adults achieve at the end of October.
Vitamin D intake to attain a desired serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration. is further work showing higher intakes are needed.
The only way to be sure what your body needs is to get a £20 postal 25(OH)D test after you have been regularly using an effective amount and seeing if that is sufficient.
What matters ultimately is what actually happens in practice and Dr Davis (latitude 43ish Wisconsin finds.
The vast majority of women require 5000 units per day, males 6000 units per day to maintain a blood level in the desirable range. (I aim for 60-70 ng/ml. 60ng ~ 150nmol/l 70ng ~175nmol/l

First time we've been on page 2, thought everyone had upped and gone
Thanks for all the info on supplements, its a bit clearer now. I got some chronium picolinate at H&B today and should have picked up some more vit D. Ive only been taking 3 a day so will need to increase.
Im up for surgery too. I keep saying when my numbers come up thats the first thing Im going to do0 -
Morning all!
Currently I regularly take
5000iu Vit D
co-q10
vit E
cod liver oil
omega 3
5HTP
I stopped the cod liver for about 3 months as I ran out and thought it'd be ok. Very quickly (after 2ish months) I developed crepitus (cracking) in my thumbs and other joints. After only 5 days back on the cod it has mostly gone back to normal! :j Glad about that as we have a family history of arthritis and I'd like to forget about that for as long as possible. I have regularly taken cod liver oil for around 10+ years and will jolly well carry on now I've proved just how good it is for me
Flapping like a trapped herring about the hols this weekend, got to fly from a new airport and land at one I've never been to either  Although I like travelling alone it's a bit scary as there's only you to get it right :rotfl:
