just made an omellete for brunch and automatically splodged a dollop of ketchup on it. Hope I haven't ruined my day because of it. Are there any 'good' sauces to buy or make please?

While there's a lot of carbs in ketchup you're not eating a lot of it so, put in perspective, no.

Cardini's caesar salad dressing is relatively low 1.9g/100ml IIRC.

I have been making my own 'ketchup' from tomato puree, balsamic vinegar, soya sauce and sometimes some chilli. I'm not sure it is that much lower in carbs but it is rather delicious.

Think of the heart saving lycopene in tomato ketchup then the carbs pale into insignificance.;)

I've been on the hunt for a different soup recipe (although I'm being nagged for minty pea and ham) and doing the veg carb calculations I was a bit surprised to see leeks coming in at 11g per 100 grams, this is the same as peas!

Me too as I find them 2.9 - 3.7g carb per 100g depending where you look.

They've always been pushed as lower carb than onion so I think your wires may be crossed here :)

You don't have any control over what life throws at you.
You DO have control over how you react :)

Hmmmmm........ This was from the nutrition date guide I regularly post up - generally reliable. The weightloss guide doesn't say whether they are cooked or raw, but even so, it still wouldn't be so different. Need to look into this, thanks Merc x

The calorie data link says raw @ 2.9g/100g which is nice and low, can't say I eat much of them raw, mind :)

Anyway, at least we can eat leeks with gay abandon :j

    I love em :D

  • Afternoon all, yes def. agree with the cold weather/eating more consensus, seem to be picking more.

If anyone else is in soup mode, a quick list of favourites (all per 100g)
    Carrots 7g
    Peas 11g
    Cabbage 3g
    Squash 10g
    Broccoli 4g
    Swede 4g
    Onion 7g
    B. Sprouts 5g
    Asparagus 2g
    Celery 1g
    Tomatoes 3g

All in their raw state and with the fibre content taken out, so net carbs.

Sheila, sorry I've just noticed you asked me about hemp seeds. They are quite nice actually, sort of nutty in taste and texture.

On the coconut milk theme again, still had a bit left after making the pancakes, so grated a small apple (between me and hubbie), added some cinnamon, greek yogurt and the c.milk, hemp seeds (opt) and mixed together. Lovely and refreshing; in the 13-16g carb bracket I would think.

Need to go shopping now and it's not very nice outside!!

What about parsnip soup? boil the parsnips and liquidise.then add double cream and season to taste.
    simple and delicious.

  • ^^^^ aren't parsnips on a par with spuds in the carb ratings? I would love some parsnip soup.

Ignore the troll, please, his sole purpose is to undermine and derail. If you right click on his user name you can put him on ignore.

Parsnips have about 13g carbs per 100g with the average parsnip coming in at 20g (your total carb allowance for the day if you're following Atkins induction). High GI, high GL, they come in about the same as a serving of orange juice...

Exactly why I didn't list them.
