Its thanks to the stuff i've sold this week and last, that I am able to pay electricity and council tax this month. Will have another good look at that thread to see if I can find other ways to make some money. Thank you for your support. x
Jerry x 3 - hope this does not sound patronising , but I think you are amazing for taking such a positive , proactive approach for your financial difficulties. I so hope things get better for you and yours soon.
I am still having 3 goods days and then a fall from grace :-(. Biggest problem is getting ravenous on a Weds after an hours arerobic class, having a few sweets, then going on a sugar high carb fest for the next 24 hours!
I have been reading the intermittant fasting thread with great interest - thinking back I was at my lightest in my 20's when I ate just twice a day with no carb cravings. I gave into the constant barrage of "3 meals, 2 snacks" eatign advice, and put on over 3 stone.
Eating 5 times as day, the maths are simple - eat 30 cals too many at each meal, then 30 x 5 x 30 x 12 = 54,000 too many per year or about a stone of fat!!!
I have decided to do a 500 calories "fast" on Friday and Monday each week ( I do exercise one weekend day, Tues or Weds and Thursday too if I have the energy.
Last Friday was the first fast, had nat. yog and berrries for breakfast, green tea in the day and cottage cheese with a HUGE pile of veg for dinner and felt just fine :-)
Doing the same gain today - it feels nice not worrying what my lunch/snacks will be, getting nicely back in touch with "hunger" rather than eating by the clock.
Best wishes to all.0 -
Interesting! I thought when I looked at mercy's pud recipe, that it was using oats, until I looked a second time! From the bad old days I've got a container of oats and another of homemade muesli, and I hate chucking good food away, I thought I could use a tablespoon or two hidden in things as I wouldn't touch cereals with a barge pole now.
However, I thought I'd look into oats/oat bran a bit more, and found that oats, uncooked, surprisingly, are classed as strongly inflammatory, 6g carbs per 10g - but 1g fibre, so 5g really - with masses of omega 6 compared to small amount of omega 3.
Cooking, - in water - changes everything, 1.2g carbs per 10g (.2g fibre per 10g included) and now hardly registering on the inflammatory scale. Omega 3 & 6 severely reduced. (Cooking with milk will obviously change the values.)
Whereas, oatbran raw has the same amount of carbs as the whole oat, again surprisingly, only .5g more fibre than the whole oat but the inflammation factor has gone right down to mildly inflammatory.
Now, oatbran cooked completely changes things. Taking out the fibre (which is now only .3g per 10g) the carb value is .8g per 10g, and, as with the whole oat, the inflammatory value now hardly registers. Both omega 3 & 6 again severely diminish with cooking.
Both the whole oat and the bran have really good amounts of vits and mins, but as a good source of fibre I think there are better things out there, as for the carb value when cooked oats aren't that bad. Perhaps a mixture of the 2 might make a good option for brekkie, if you were that way inclined?0 -
Interesting info murphydog. I sometimes have a small bowl porridge (30g oats) as it is supposed to lower cholesterol and relieves the monotony. I do like porridge but count it within my days intake of carbs. Not tried oatbran though.
Let us know how you get on AudreyHepburn and good luck
Taking my grandson to Birmingham tomorrow for a few days so may be unable to post. I intend to eat salad as much as possible so should be ok but the weather forecast is wet. I have told him that we will be walking everywhere, which doesn't please him but he could do with the exercise and I definitely need it!!

aliasojo: Welcome to the thread. You'll get a lot of support here. Please stay with us, as your health as you know is something you can not buy. You have been very ill and thankfully you have realised its time to do something. Don't worry about eating the odd carb. After all, this is a low carb thread, not a zero carb thread!
Thanks Audrey Hepburn for the support. I love this thread and i'm so glad I joined.
Sheila, its all going really well. Without ending up writing a huge long essay, a lot is going on. We managed to spend very very little this week-end. Only had to buy bread, milk and fruit. I make OH's sandwiches for work most of the time.
We are eating out of the freezer and are very lucky that we made so much hay while the sun was shining. We were always in Asda at whoopsi time, so I think we are going to have four or five very cheap weeks.. ie.. very little spending. My Husband is getting a payment into his account this week for his travel ezxpenses, so that will pay for the petrol this week. I've had a payment in from the agency. We also have about 70 pounds in my ebay selling accouunt.. so that's all good. but the best bit.. I have 9 hours worth of work on Wednesday! So that money will go in the following friday.
This morning, I applied for a job via email and sent my cv.. and to my surprise, not only did the lady respond, but she asked me along for an interview on thursday! Its a job as a legal sec which I can do with my eyes closed. So feeling confident, that I may even get it, who knows? I'm due some good luck.
It all looks as though we are going to get through this awful patch.
Last night, I had chicken wings and some awful chinese pork which was mostly fat.. so I gave most of mine to the dog. I was a bit naughty and had some ice cream afterwards while watching closing ceremony! Oh, also had two beers! Naughty!
Today: L: Moussaka (leftovers).steak with coleslaw
Water, lots - 2 litres!
My waist is looking amazing and I have to admit, I sneakily weighed myself on sat am and I was exactly 10 stone! I haven't been that light for yonks! Oops., this did turn into a mighty long essay. Hope everybody is doing good.0 -

Cheers jerry x3.
I've been around for a good few years now and the peeps on this thread with the exception of 2 I can think of  (not here anymore) are all lovely. They've put up with my drivel for yonks now AND have been hugely supportive when I was going through some particularly hard personal times a while back.
I lost a lot of weight in the early days.....then put it on.....then took it off...then (well you get the picture :rotfl:)
I can't be messing around any more now though so I need to knuckle down. You listening sweet...no more naughty bench, I'm being good.:D.
I'm thinking of giving the IF 16/24 thing a go. It seems to make sense to me to only eat during a certain time, that fits in with how I imagine our ancestors would eat. None of this 3 meals a day with snacks in between for them!
Still mulling it over for now though, would like to be more 'settled' back into low carbing before I do any thing else, but we'll see. I do tend to get caught up with whatever the latest bandwagon is. :rotfl:
Fingers crossed for the interview.
Mercy...or anyone...where would a person buy oatbran? Can't say it's something I've ever seen. But then I haven't actually been looking for it.Herman - MP for all!0 -
i have been doing the 5: 2 fast ( on my second day now) had one meal at lunchtime yesterday and same today. i think in future i will stick to doing the 16:8 IF as im finding this hard , it was worth a try though and hopefully it will stop me snacking as slipped into snacking mode again
aliasjo glad you are with us again, dressing up healthy food to look like junk works for me if it works for you
mercy hows your back?
sweet :wave:0 -
Hi alias
You can get 800g Mornflake oatbran from Sainsburys for £1.99 but most supermarkets stock it. However it is not especially low carb, having 49.7g carbs per 100g with 15.2g fibre. It is a must for those follwing Dukan i.e. Mercy & bossymoo but their diet is low fat and has different requirements, though being low carb nevertheless. I admire them as I would miss cream, cheese etc and am not sure that I could eat some meals without veg but it works, as they will tell you.
sistercas - another IF follower, though I think that you have tried it before? I really like to hear about different versions of diet as it gives ideas so please let me know how it goes
jerry x 3 ( do you mind being called this?) - sounds like you are doing well and things are looking up. I really hope that you get the job.
mazzers is doing well and has lost nearly a stone and a half on the diet that she is doing :T
Personally I think that our bodies get used to following one particular diet so having the occasional shake up is good as it kickstarts the system and gives variety. The problem comes when we get used to having more variety, add more again and then the weight piles back on. It must be heartbreaking when this happens after all the hard work so I hope to be able to follow a version of low carb so that doesn't happen. I don't want to be 20 stone again ever  There you go, I bet that you have never been that big0 -

 What's maz doing? I can't remember if I read anything about her diet or not.
Don't have time to trawl just now. OH is in the kitchen shouting the odds about something or other (I think he dropped food). :rotfl:Herman - MP for all!0 -
Why not pm her and ask. Not being awkward but she decided to try something different as she wasn't losing weight.
Mercy - can you adapt your recipes without using the microwave? I had a blood screen last year and the guy showed me cells that had been nuked by using a microwave so I try to avoid using it now.0 -

MMmmmmmm. A reply shrouded in secrecy.
 Ha! She's had lipo!:rotfl:
Is she still here then? I never seem to see her on, apart from the very very odd occasion.Herman - MP for all!0
