Gray Malkin and murphydog - yes I think that I still have quite a high fat % but how do you measure muscle mass please?

A professional will do it properly Sheila, there are a few different ways, however they all give different results, but generally within a small range. There are cheaper weighing-type scales and they will give you an 'idea,' but their accuracy can't be guaranteed.

Fat is measured first, than muscle mass and body water.

As I said before I walk quite a bit so that takes care of my calves, which are actually not bad. Thighs are worst of all so am trying to work out those and belly roll. I have been referred for an MRI as my cervical spine is giving me more problems and I keep trapping a nerve at night which is causing head pain. The top of my back down to the thoracic region is quite often in spasm so I can't do too much with that. I also can't lift arms above my head easily for the same reason but I carried some pretty heavy bags when away with DGD so that must have been some resistance training :D. I am eating more now as I am out a lot and having to adapt so hope that this will spur further weight loss when i cut down again and allow muscle mass to build. Weight is staying stable.

Thanks for everything and big hugs to those having problems x

nuttybabe - go for it and then post a photo of you wearing it ;)
I think that doing unusual things is a good way of relieving stress myself, especially when it embarrasses the younger generation :D

Thank you murphydog for yet more impeccable information :T You've inspired me to do 30 minutes of stretching and 20 minutes with the dumbells. I know I should have a regular regime :o.

Sheila, I have three dodgy discs, cervical and thoracic, that I've spent a fortune on at various chiropractors and osteopaths, so I know how limiting that kind of pain can be. I've been given various core strengthening exercises over the years which I do now and again (again, I know I should have a regular regime :o).
I walk quite a few miles every day so my legs aren't too bad, and lately I've been doing push-ups against a wall which seem to have toned my arms quite a bit. Also a feeble attempt at ab crunches - which raise me about an inch off the floor, but I've noticed a difference in my stomach muscles over the last four weeks.

    Little steps :D

Excellent, well done to you. :T

I know this is a diet thread, but it's all relevant and I have an inspirational story to share, if I may.

A few years ago when I was teaching abroad, a lady (english) came to my class and asked if she could join. She was old, frail and very grey looking. I was a bit skeptical that she could keep up, but she was very determined, so I kept an eye on her, felt that she did what she could, and at the end she said she really enjoyed it. However, I didn't really expect to see her again.

She was with me for 5 years until I left, 2/3 x a week.

It turns out she was in her 60's - but looked at least 10 years older - she had breast cancer, went into remission, then a second cancer was found in the other breast, she had the treatment and was in remission. She had had a really bad car accident, had many broken bones, and had metal pins in both ankles, all this had taken it's toll. In those years I saw her transform, from a sad, grey old lady, to a tall, positive, force that was happy to be working out with people 30 years or more younger.

She did me a small testimonial and said, Thank you for all your efforts on my behalf, you have truly made a difference to my fitness, and confidence to at least try the exercises. You never left me with the feeling of complete incompetence, for that I thank you; you always encourage.

In truth she had done it all herself, she was/is truly an inspiration. What I'm trying to say is that there are ways and means of overcoming obstacles, the body is far more capable than the mind thinks it is. But we need to keep ourselves in the best health we can.

Gray Malkin - I will try the push ups against the wall, thanks :)

murphydog - just keep on my case as I am sure that exercise will help. Like I said I walk a lot but guess that it doesn't help my upper back.

I really need to do something about my putty thighs as they are worst of all

Off to bed so nite all and sweet dreams :)

Murphydog - thanks for that inspirational story. I was actually quite moved. My new month's resolution - I will do at least a little exercise every day, and not just walk the dog :A

Good luck with the push-ups Sheila.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Nice picture and headband :) Well done to resist chocolate, though I do have a couple of squares of 70% each day.

Gray Malkin - well done on decision to exercise each day, we will have to encourage each other ;)
