Can I crawl back in please?

Went on holiday, wasn't too bad, a few cocktails but not too much damage, but since I've been back I have been cramming carbs and sugar into my mouth and have put on over half a stone. It has to stop and NOW! I'm supposed to be losing weight for goodness sake

So I have had one cup of tea and have some eggs to scramble for brunch, then will shop for lc goodies on the way home from w*rk.
I really enjoy eating this way, and have no idea why I eat the carp when I do - I don't even enjoy it. It is almost like I am punishing myself for something .........

Anyway - you lot sure can chat - I have loads to catch up on.

Hello everyone. My temping last night was really good. Had to take notes behind a screen where the people involved in market research could not see us. Great fun. Was offered biscuits.. refused. Then sandwiches! Well, as they were free, I didn't want to be rude and succumbed to just one.

    So Yesterday:

L: vegetables (peppers, cellery) with cream cheese
Snack: a very naughty not low carb sandwich
D: Chicken wings dipped in mayo. (husband had dinner ready for me when I got home).

Drank about a litre of water yesterday and had two coffees. One decaf and the other caffinated at work.

    Today: L: sausages and tomato
Dinner: Spinnach, aubergine and mushroom curry with yoghurt and cucumber (grated into yoghurt), and a salad of radishes and red onion soaked in lemon juice on the side.

Will drink loads of water today.

    Murphydog - a question if I may?

I am a real couch potato (so not at all lc, :rotfl:) and have been very lazy during the summer hols - I work in a school that has different holidays to Uk schools, so ours are almost over. Anyway, that is beside the point.
I really need to begin to exercise, but I have arthritis in my knees. The inflammation makes it difficult to walk for long periods, and I have trouble bending them but I have started to walk 10 mins to and from a different station to get to work. We have access to a fully equipped gym at school. Can you please suggest some very gently exercises I could try? I can't do this one - :j, :rotfl:

    Thanks a million.

  • Greetings! Been away from the 'puter for a few days house sitting
    :-).

Was doing OK - 100g or fewer carbs per day, then massive FAIL last night (think inhaling chocolate digestives) after getting hacked off with Other `Afr for making me mix concrete by hand until 9.30pm!

In truth, he is the loveliest Bloke on the planet - barring the male partners of fellow posters :-) , he did not have clue I was miserable, would be gutted to know how unhappy I was, but I CHOSE to "eat" my emotions rather than getting assertive and doing something more fun that eating carp!

Jerry - you are amazing well done for cutting down on booze and getting positive about Life!

Thanks to all who post here, slowly, slowly I am learning to improve my eating habits.

Today is going well so far, have very little food in the house,so will have to go to Aldi and stock up again. The Olympics are on all the time, its very exciting to watch, isn't it!
Welcome back everyone who has returned to the fold,remember-there's no standing still on this path, you're either heading the carb way or the low-carb way, just make sure you're heading the right way, even if you take the odd diversion every now and again!!!

    Sheila-are you ok??

Well.......I can only be general as I don't know your weight/age/lifestyle/body make-up, or if you have any other problems apart from dodgy knees.

Like you say, you want gentle exercise. I don't know how overweight you are, but there is no point in doing energetic stuff until you are at a point where it isn't going to damage your joints and ligaments. However, even with arthritis it is better to exercise than not, and the extra 10 minutes you have started with help. As you get used to this you will be able to increase.

Did you see my post a while back saying about stretching? If you have been 'slouched on the couch,' it would be a good idea to re-awaken your muscles and get them back into realising that they all have a role to play in maintaining your body shape, the way you walk and hold yourself, i.e. your posture. If for whatever reason you can't exercise, stretching is the next best thing, keeping a supple body will ward-off a whole range of injuries and problems as you get older. I'll try and find the post.......

If your gym has weight machines, I would recommend you DON'T use them. They are generally designed to use, or focus, on one muscle group at a time and in ways that the human body has no need for - however some of the upper body ones work shoulders, chest and arms, and are better - the machines should have descriptions on which should tell you this.

There is nothing to stop you getting something inexpensive like a resistance band and doing lots of exercises using these. If you tie the band around your ankles, you can stand (or lie-down) and do side/front/back lifts, inside thigh as well. (The stronger your leg muscles becomes the more pressure they will take off the knee.) They are very useful for upper body as well. Some bands are sold with exercise sheets, or go on u-tube, or find a class, or DVD.

If you want something more energetic, without using your lower body, how about boxing? It's a brilliant exercise for sculpting arms, waist, using core muscles and upper back, as well as being aerobic. A trainer would be handy to do this with initially - so you do it properly - but if you had a willing partner, they could hold a pad (or cushion?) and you could go for it - take turns perhaps?

What I would also recommend are balancing exercises - has the gym got anything like this...... http://www.physiosupplies.com/fitness/66fit-Wobble-Balance-Boards-40cm-DVD.html

an implement isn't strictly necessary - but handy - again u-tube probably has some good exercise choices, but what these type of exercises do is force all the small muscles and ligaments around the ankle, calf and knee to become stronger, and again that will help. They also use your hamstrings, quads (thigh muscles), glutes (bottom) and core muscles so are very useful, done regularly.

What I would always recommend is you see a trainer, it doesn't have to be on a regular basis and they may not be as expensive as you think, you will see results more quickly and you will be doing things safely. Elantan is proof of this.

Sorry it got a bit long, hope it helps!

PS. I take it as well as the low-carb, you are avoiding the 'nightshade' group of foods to deal with the arthritis?

Thank you Murphydog. It is kind of you to take the time and trouble to answer in so much detail. Are nightshades potatoes, etc? Will have a quick google to see.

Yes, the gym has wobble boards. I'll check it out propely later in the week. I'm going to get organised and actually use it!

I've had a good day so far - 2xGG cracker with peanut butter and two scrambled eggs. No fat yet because I was at work. Off shopping now to stock up.
