    Morning all

Thank you for your concern :)

To be honest I was busy yesterday and I am trying to come to terms with my GP visit yesterday. My cholesterol is down a bit but is still 6.7 , LDL 4. Thyroid function test levels too high but Free T4 normal, so struggling but managing to cope.

    The problem is that
    a) Before I started low carb my cholesterol was 4.6, then 7.4 and now 6.7. LDL was low, then 4.4, now 4, both too high. On top of that I have been cutting fat somewhat since last result though still having around 90-100g a day, 30 - 40g saturated.

    Have a good day everyone.

    Hi Sheila,
I know nothing at all medical, but surely if your thyroid is out of kilter, then that will affect the other readings???Or is your thyroid not an issue?
Hugs to you though, it must make you feel abit like a guinea pig, trying out different things.Thank goodness your GP is open minded about your eating.
  • Morning all :hello:

SHEILA, so sorry you didn't get the news you were hoping for :( I don't know what to suggest, maybe looking at the Dukan with that being low carb/low fat??

I haven't tried any of the recipes out of the IPD cookbook yet, am determined to do so though as there's loads of yummy sounding ones.

sistercas, good to see another GG crispbread muncher :D What do you have on yours??

B - reheated (pastryless I should add) quiche from yesterday
L - 2 buttered GG crispbreads with topping (to be decided), chopped vine tomatoes
D - chicken, cauli, broc, cabbage, mushroom sauce

Need to buy more strawberries today & will have them with double cream, almonds will also be nibbled at some point.

The leftover quiche was gorgeous this morning & only took a minute to heat up in the micro.

    3 eggs
150g cottage cheese (mine was actually low fat onion & chive from Aldi 3.1g carbs per 100g)
    Pieces of cooked gammon
A small red onion that had been lightly sauteed
Small handful grated cheese (mine was garlic & herb cheddar from Tesc0)
    Black pepper

Mix it all together in a bowl & pour into a buttered dish - cook at 190 degrees for about 30-35 minutes until cooked & lightly browned.

Hope everyone has a good LC day today

Hi Sheila, there was a bit of a hub-bub about the Swedish study on long term low carb diets that came out at the end of June. A lot of people are claiming the results are extremely flawed, but there are others who are in complete agreement. Some of the information provided is quite compelling and did make me think twice. Would suggest you do some reading and arm yourself with some additional info. Here are a couple of for and against pieces that might be helpful:

    http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2012/06/time-to-retire-the-low-carb-diet-fad/258343/

    http://lowcarbgeek.com/post/25049299482/poor-reporting-or-bad-study-review-of-25-year-swedish

My take on it: I've never been comfortable with the aspect of low carb diets that some people take to extremes.. e.g sitting and eating a whole tub of clotted cream or having a mountain of fried bacon and eggs for breakfast every single day. Too much of ANYTHING in large quantities can never be good. I know most low carbers don't eat like that, but there are quite a few who do. I try and go for moderation in all things and I've always, always eaten more vegetables than I should because I just don't feel very well if I don't. Hopefully that should stand me in good stead as I've been low carbing on and off for a very long time. With the exception of pregnancies, probably 5-6 months a year for 10 years. I do worry about it though, think I will go get my blood tested and see where I'm at.

Good luck, your GP sounds great and very clued up, unlike a lot I have come across! I hope everything works out for you.

Busy day today, first day of school holidays and I'm going away tomorrow so need to get organised.

    Food:

    B: Mushroom Omlette
L: Pan fried marinated chicken breast with a rocket salad.
    D: Steak & Salad.
S: Bowl of cauli & broc Soup, almonds, olives.

    Have a lovely day everyone.
  • Please excuse me butting into your thread - I am an avid "lurker" who has been low carb since June in an attempt to curb a serious carb binge habit.

May I suggest you do a web search of the benefits of psyllium husk on cholesterol levels/ blood lipids.

There is a lot of info. which will help you decide if you think it would be suitable for you to try. If you do decide to get some, I have found that suppliers of protein suppliments are the cheapest source.

I have absolutely no motive of "pushing" suppliment sites etc. I have personally found psyllium very useful - it also help my guts and stops me getting ravenous due to keeping me felling full. Hope this helps!

I went the MSE way and kept the healthy but higher carb food (e.g. porridge) and eat them for breakfast so I can burn off the extra carbs throughout the day. But as I've said before, I'm not aiming for super low carbs as I don't find I need to be as restrictive. I didn't really have many bad carbs left as I don't have the space to keep a large stockpile of anything, but have given the worst offenders (bagels, etc) away to friends who are also MSE but don't need to LC.

    Hello Sheila

Most cholesterol is produced in the liver, very little of it in what you eat.

    Here's someone else's take on it: http://www.zoeharcombe.com/2012/06/why-hasnt-my-healthy-diet-cut-my-cholesterol/

You don't have to eat huge amounts of red meat!

Since reading that article DH, who is nobody's fool, has decided not to take any more statins. He didn't know why he was being asked to take them anyway!

Hello everybody! Raining again here in the midlands. Well, i've had my weekly wednesday weigh in.. and i'm 10 stone 1 lb. No change at all from last week. I've been low carbing two weeks. Lost 5 lbs in the first week, then nothing on week two. HOWEVER, I'm not disheartened. I know i've cheated. I had a bar of chocolate and of course, the alcohol.

Also, this might be a week of no loss, so that it will come off next week. I will plug on and see how I am on wednesday next week.

    Today:

L: 2 eggs, 2 sausages and one tomato
D: Avacado, prawns, tomato, cucumber and red onion salad

Black coffees and a pepsi zero. (still have not managed to get out to get cream due to the rain).

Thank you all for your encouragement, information and advice. I think that I will just carry on as I have been for the moment, try and lose a bit more weight - pleeeeease ;) and see what happens. I hardly eat any red meat as I seem to prefer fish and chicken nowadays. I do like nuts but have been advised to stay away from peanuts, cashews and stick to almonds and walnuts. Coconut oil I stopped after the first blood result as it is saturated fat but I know that it is good fat. I cook with olive oil, have one pat butter a day, 2 - 3 oz cream, 1 oz cheese and semi skimmed lactofree milk.

margaretclare - I have read the info but unfortunately the fact remains that things have changed since I started low carbing just over a year ago so I have to bear it in mind. I will not take statins though - that I do know!

AudreyHepburn -thanks, I will have a look. I use diet + flax, nuts and seeds to keep me going at the moment.

cherrypies - Thanks for the info - I will have a read. Have a good time away. Where are you going?

sweetserendipity - your menu sounds great!

marbett - yes my thyroid is a bit out of kilter and that can cause cholesterol problems but my GP doesn't think that it is the case.

Jerry, jerry, jerry - both coffee and coke can stall some people so bear it in mind. Positively I am sure that you will lose, if you are good ;)
