Unfortunately what they did dwell on was calories, not type of food. An instance was given of a Subway roll and a Mc D burger. Because Subway is marketed as 'fresh' ingredients, it is deemed healthier, but in fact it has twice as many calories as the burger. And because people think they have eaten less calories they have a more fattening drink or a dessert as well.
What wasn't said was that the majority of the calories would have could from carbs with the Subway roll, as the vast majority was bread and twice the size of the burger. But I s'pose that would have complicated matters!
i noticed that as well ...; they seemed to spend a great deal of time talking about calories rather than nutrition ... made me wonder what angle they were coming from
alot of dietry advice just now seems to be about calories :cool:0 -
I agree a lot of the programme was stuff we already knew, but it made interesting (& blood boiling) viewing. I'm hoping to watch the 3 programmes again on iplayer if they're still on.
murphy, I wish I hadn't done that test!!BMI - not telling but waaaay too high, above average nationally & globally for my age group & apparently my profile makes me most like someone from Micronesia!!
SHEILA, no sign of carb flu yet, early days though & I do usually get it. Had my hamster bedding crispbreads with mexican cheddar today - yum!!
Jerry, I think I'll have to investigate the Lidl gammon steaks, thanks. I've looked at the Aldi packaging & I've bought the 'Specially Selected' version so they'd better be good for £2.99!!
durham, sorry didn't know you couldn't have wheat/gluten - have you tried the parmesan 'crisps'?? I think the method is on Mercy's recipe list on page 1, it's dead easy, I found them a bit too salty for me though.
Back later...0 -
daska - sorry that today is a bad day for you
I really hope that you are feeling better soon. Has anything sparked it or just the usual?
murphydog - just spurs me on to try harder. Very stiff and sore today but will try more exercise asap. Do you use a harness with your dog as I wonder if this would spread the weight as Coco really does pull hard?
breakfast - yogurt, flax mixture & seeds
snack - 1 ryvita with edam cheese
lunch - avocado half, tuna, mayo, romaine lettuce
snack - 1 oz 70% chocolate, 6 cashew nuts, 10 pistachios
dinner - chicken, 2oz butternut squash, courgettes, asparagus (all veg from Aldi)
snack - almond pancake with raspberries and cream
bedtime - cocoa with lactofree milk
56 carbs
What are you all doing over the weekend? Anything exciting?0 -
I didn't see the programme last night because I wanted to see 'The Bank of Dave' instead - now, that was an eye-opener, if you like. I wish that man every success.
A very long time ago now I saw through that 'healthier' gambit of the food manufacturers. They all say things like 'lower fat' - lower than what, exactly? Unless you know what the starting-point was, it's meaningless. And what KIND of fat? Most processed foods contain hydrogenated fat which is the baddie, whereas when I was growing up we had lard, beef dripping or butter from the local farm. DH can still wax nostalgic about 'doorstep' sized slices of bread with beef dripping for breakfast when he was an apprentice!
I think the only answer is to eat food that's as fresh as possible, as local as possible, as little-processed as possible, and that cuts out most of what is on sale in any of the supermarkets.
I haven't been very low-carb today so far. We had bite-sized Shredded wheat for breakfast with half a sliced banana and Country Life organic semi-skimmed milk, 2 cups of coffee with milk. For lunch I just felt like a baked potato - haven't had a potato at all for a year! - so we went round to the airport cafe and had baked potato with tuna. I probably won't want anything else today at all.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

Thing is, with something like that you know where you stand, and like Sheila says, it can make you more determined.
By the way, keep posting, lurve your avatar - shame it couldn't be made bigger.
Sheila, unfortunately my beautiful Murphy is no longer with us. Once we move, it is one of our priorities to get another 1 or 2. We've been without a dog for 6 years now and it's too long. There's always a cuddly cat or two in the house, but it's not quite the same.
Re. the harness, there was something about this on the pets section, I don't think they are any better, puppy training will better address the problem.0 -
Hi all, husband is cooking fresh fries. But I wont touch them. However, i've decided to have a few vodkas tonight with slimline tonic because I think i've been so good this week. (trust me, I have), as if you knew what I was like 2 weeks ago, you'd faint.
I was getting through a bottle of wine every night! the excuse being.. oh, I don't have to go to work in the morning. No exercise for a year! AND, all the carbs I could get down my neck!
Its going to be a lovely quiet week-end, carb dodging, and minding the rain!
Hope everybody has a great friday night!
One more thing. I DID have one single date earlier. I bought these dates a few weeks ago to make sticky toffee pudding. There are loads left. They are in the fridge and they keep on screaming at me, every time I open the door. I must cover them up with something.0 -
Mercy - it is Friday so how have you done. By the way Dukan is a high protein, low carb diet
http://www.dukandiet.co.uk/en/693-services/resources/high-protein-low-carb-diet.html
Sheila, I know what Dukan Diet is as I have been reading the book and living the thing for nearly 5 days :rotfl:
My not posting foods on here is so I do not confuse others. The low carb premise is to replace energy from carbs with energy from fat. Dukan is also low fat. Any day to day details belong on a Dukan thread, not here.
However, I'm going to give you the low down all at once with with appropriate qualifiers. In a bit. After food. so you'll have wait just a little longer......
Hope you're not still hurting from your tumble, it's horrible when that happens.
Much love

Mercy - Sorry but I have been worried that you would leave us and that just would be a great pity0 -
Just a quickie, as I'm supposed to be working.
Sorry to hear about your fall Sheila, and sorry to hear you're not so good Daska.
Well done to all those who have continued to lose:T
Better go and pretend to be busy......
PS - Jealous of the vodka jerry0 -
Hi all!
Ich bin ein Dukaner
Well, been eating Dukan stylee since monday morning and I'm happy to report that as of 7.30 this morning I have lost 2kg! (4.4lbs in old money) :j
Won't be able to weigh myself until monday morning but hope to see a little more come off.
I have another day of protein only attack phase then I will be alternating that with protein and veg. Pleased to say my sauerkraut and kimchi are fat free so can indulge in them again.
I haven't found it difficult but still having a few thought probs with the whole fat free thing. Still, it's working so farWhen I put all my details in it said to expect to lose 5lb on attack phase and that seems to be coming true.
It feels good.
