Wonder where Edwardia, Mercy, daska are and how mazzers is doing?

    Hi sistercas x

    Hello :D
Doc confirmed advanced arthritis in both knees today :(

He said replacements on the cards, same thing happened to my mum, suddenly having trouble at about my age and had both replaced.. not happy with that, would rather struggle, they only last 10 years.

I have to lose weight now.
My cal counting is going well, lost 3lb by mid week and another lb today so am happy with 4lb in the first week.
Also the heartburn has gone again, i usuallly put it down to lc-ing but it's prob cutting out carp thats the secret after all.

Been trying to find a good non-flax recipe for crackers specifically for cheese, and tried these today

    http://buttoni.wordpress.com/2012/03/21/rosemary-onion-almond-thins/

they turned out lovely (didn't have onion powder, so omitted), and the poster reckons they are less than 1g carb each - obviously dependant on thickness. There are 2 other recipes as well.

    Lovely with some cambanzola :D

OMG , I turn my back and this thread turns into a veritable carb fest
Crisps, Viennetta, gravy, bread, rice cakes, potatoes, oat cakes, low fat yogurts, chocolate eggs.... none of these items are remotely low carb.

    Murphydog999 - sterling work there :T

mazzers.. sorry to hear about your knees :( (((mazzers))) Please don't mention calorie counting tho cos you'll start Sheila54 off on it as well ;) and it'll confuse the newbies...

sistercas - doing well I see :T yee ha

sheila54 please ignore the word calories.. you're doing good too :T

Just discovered Tetley Redbush teabags on offer in Sainsbury's 1.00 per box 0.3g carbs per 100ml

Going organic is proving difficult as I'm only finding eggs, butter, creme fraiche, yogurt, milk, carrots and mushrooms..nagged some supermarkets today as a consequence.

Just finished Not On The Label by Felicity Lawrence and OMG the cr*p that goes into ham and chicken ewwww. Made me feel positively sick. Thankfully I don't eat such stuff now.

OH has just roasted some Gressingham duck breast fillets (5.00 special purchase, Morrisons) for his lunch tomorrow. I don't like giving him carby things cos I feel they are unhealthy but as he's fit and skinny and eats low carb meals, he needs to stop losing weight according to doc. So he gets lowest sugar cereal bars I can find, wholemeal cheese rolls or ciabatta, oranges, pears, bananas, not from concentrate pressed juices (in moderation), and occasional treats like Oreo cookies, Soreen malt loaf, Cadbury's buttons, Maynards wine gums and Jaffa cakes.

B - Whole mozzarella, sliced on top of pile of button mushrooms cooked in ghee with a couple of vine tomatoes lobbed in and a sliced orange pepper.
    L - too busy
D - Lamb chops, swede & turnip mash, tenderstem broccoli. mange touts, green beans and a teeny drizzle of OH's Harrington's Benenden sauce on the mash.

durham_mim - sorry, I wasn't criticising as we all choose different amounts of carbs depending on our circumstances. I also use lactofree milk as it is lower in carbs and tastes ok to me.

mazzers - glad that the diet is working for you but sorry to hear about your knees. I have had 2 operations on my spine which have limited my movement somewhat. Wish that I hadn't now as the scar tissue has made the condition worse than before I had the ops but it is always on the cards. Don't let that put you off having the operations if you need them as I was quoted 80% success rate but I just happen to be one of the 20%

Edwardia - hi and I haven't mentioned the cal word for a while so I do listen :)

murphydog999 - I have always been very against taking any tablets but I will look into it. I may stop those that I take as I really don't need any copper or selenium either. The crackers sound good but do they still taste of almonds?

Blimey, you're quick off the mark! They are very quick and easy to make though!

Edwardia, thx, you were a bit quiet so got I sort of carried away :o

Mazzers and Sheila - and anyone else for that matter - may I suggest Pilates for exercise? I don't know if you have tried it before, but it works you quite hard as it uses all the major muscle groups, but doesn't require any impact that would affect joints.

It is excellent for back and core strength, balance, flexibility, and all-over strengthening. Plenty of cheap DVD's on Amazon if you don't want to find a class. And you can do anywhere from 10-50 minutes a day, no special equipment or footwear required.

Very good, however walnuts are really high in Omega 6 (need more omega 3, as it's less inflammatory) and a bit carby; almonds, hazelnuts, macadamias, or a mixed selection would be a little more beneficial.

Might I say, your shake sounds nice, but high carb due to the juice and banana!

i read omega 6 was good for the brain ...i need some serious help in that area ,so thought it would not hurt ..i take fish oil 3 a day and eat a mainly asian diet ..japanese/chinese food .so fair bit of fish and greens.

the smoothie thing .i know high carbs .. but it fills me up for ages

i think i have increased the carbs this week due to feeling i was wasting away.. cheese on toast now seems to be my food for feeling better ..

i realised i have not thanked much ..off on a thanks mission.

as i said in my first post ..i was ok ..then got ill and was losing again ..more than i wanted .
i was very strict to begin with ..no bread ..no potatoes ..just a big cheese and ham salad for lunch ..no snacks ..well pork scratchings or mattesons smoke sausage .both 0 carb..it worked weight dropped and body shape returned very quickly .
i was jogging 5 km four or five times a week ..
i shall take on board any advice /tips ..and especially wisdom.

the vit D thing ..i am a firm believer and take 10,000 through winter ..kept on 5,000 due to the rubbish summer ..

murphydog999 - may look into pilates as I have been told that it is gentle exercise. When they did the second op they deviated the spine and it is now off centre in my neck, causing muscle spasm in my upper back, but I am getting older as well and it could be a lot worse. I sleep with a pillow on either side to stop me rolling over at night too far and also have a cyst on my lower spine but refuse to have that operated on as it isn't too bad.
Not moaning, just being factual, but it does affect my ability to do some forms of exercise, as does the epigastric hernia.

I have around 1 oz nuts a day, Waitrose 5 nut mix which is 20% brazil nuts, 20% pistachio, 20% cashew, 20% almonds and 20% hazelnuts. What do you think?
Also around 20g almonds in my pancake

    I'm here Sheila

Totally snowed under! Now that the latest project is winding up (i.e. DS2's room is nearing completion) I'm on to the next one. I've decided to hire out my fantabulous collection of novelty cake tins. Of course I need some advertising which means baking/decorating cakes so we can take photos of them etc... I'm being good though, might lick the odd finger but I've made 3 so far and only eaten one slice of one of them - I hadn't made an Austrian Coffee Cake before so had to try it :p. It also means finding table ware to fit which is surprisingly difficult - last thing I want it people hiring tins and then deciding it was too much hassle because they couldn't find a cake board to fit! And I'm buying a bit more stock because the range I have is very boy focused, which is a bit convoluted because the range that is easily available in the UK is very small and boring compared to that in the states.

Anyway, I've just about managed to lose the pounds I put on when I came off the meds but on the plus side I can do my belt up a notch tighter than before I put the weight on so I guess I've converted a bit of the fat into muscle :D

Have started cooking pizza fritatas in a muffin tin to have for breakfast/snacks, adding a bit of pesto to the egg mix and filling the muffin pan with whatever meat/veg I've got hanging around.

I do Callanetics - this is an exercise program developed by Callan Pinkney who had Scoliosis (spinal curvatures). She adapted ballet exercises so that they were not a strain on her back or other joints. I have ME and find the exercises extremely gentle but very effective. I used to have Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis in my knees and still cannot manage weight bearing exercise like jogging. You are supposed to do 100 repetitions of each exercise but I started off with a few stretches and about 2 exercises doing only 10 repetitions each. I am now (2 months later) doing 3 lots of stretches and 4 exercises at 50 repetitions each. Callentics books and DVD's should be available on Amazon though I have not looked. I bought my book back in the 90's.
