hi all,
wonder if you can have a wee look at what i plan to eat today and tell me if it sounds ok
breakfast : omlette containing 3 eggs, full fat milk, half an onion, 1 garlic clove, 4 mushrooms, handful of spinach and rocket, cooked in coconut oil
snack1: protein shake made with water added to this cinamon and nutmeg, 4 almonds, 2 brazils, 1 walnut, 2 wasabi peanuts, small handful of sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds
lunch: home made burger ( finally having to give in to eating meat for the short term until i can get this weight lifted) made with steak mince, onion, egg and chillis ( i like a kick) brocolli, cabbage and green beans
snack 2: bowl of home made soup containing turnip, carrots, garlic, red lentils, veg stock cube
dinner: chicken breast with salad including lettuce, tomatoes, spring onion, baby avacado, olives
how does that sound? i think i have enough protein ( finally) and enough fat with only the lentils are starchy carbs the veg i know is carbs but not starchy ones ... or do i have that wrong ?

globalds, there's a low carb book aimed at men specifically, called Waist Disposal and it's by Dr John Briffa www.drbriffa.com
Not wacky, really concise, includes stuff on exercise, recipes, explains all the science behind low carb. I bought it to explain low carb to OH and cos it's such a great book he hasn't seen it yet
Used to do Pilates and I think it's really good and that I shoule either dig out the DVDs or go back to a class.
durham_mim I was given the Callanetics book back in the 90s and used it but then was recommended to try Pilates which I enjoyed more in a class than doing Callanetics by myself.
Reading The Savvy Shopper by Rose Prince which isn't about money saving at all. It does answer lots of questions about food however and come up with places to buy organic and wholefood produce. I'm checking the links tho as some companies seem to have gone bust.
I've discovered that there is a Farmer's market here every Sunday and another on the outskirts of town twice a month so that's great, will investigate.
Seems to me though that I will be ordering quite a lot of our food online though as just can't find great food locally
elantan - red lentils will be carby - have a look at veg on www.glycemicindex.com0 -
daska and mazzers :T :T :T WELL DONE for your lost poundage!!! Keep at it girls,'cos you are obviously doing it right.:D
Sheila, I'd be VERY cautious about doing Pilates, with your already existing back problems!

(For DM haters,it's online elsewhere too!)
I've done both Pilates and Callenistics in the past, and would agree with durham_mim, that given Callan Pinkney's starting point of having serious spinal problems, I'd be inclined to go with Callenistics, which would be kinder to your spine and be more gentle with your limited movement.

i know they are carby but i was working on the grounds of 30g of starchy carbs per day ... so i thought today it would be lentils as that also gives me protein for the second snack ...
does that make sense ?0 -

Hmmm, it's bad enough trying to get people to exercise in the first place without over-egged journalism. I have sympathy for the woman featured but as she had scoliosis she should have either consulted her doctor, or/and made sure the instructor was qualified to teach, knew about her condition, and was aware of the parameters of the condition. She could have made a wrong move at any time that caused it - it's easily done.
In previous posts on this forum I have always advocated doing something new with someone qualified. Pilates is an exact science with technique and breathing paramount, and this is how it should be taught.
However there are some very good instructional DVDs for beginners, with 5, 10, 15, 20 minute sessions so you can do as much or as little as you want. The upside to Pilates is that the benefits outweigh the risks.
With ANY exercise there is risk if you have a condition or not, and there is no substitute for someone qualified telling you what to do. I've been teaching for 20 years this year, and never once let someone new walk in without doing a medical questionnaire. With experience of other instructors, this isn't always the case, which is slack and dangerous, something to look out for if anyone is in that situation.0 -
Very well said murphydog999 :T
elantan - speaking as college-trained ex chef and ex veggie, I'd say that lentils aren't good value when you weigh up carbs against nutrition, they aren't a good source of protein.. but if you're trying to be veggie as much as poss then fair enough.
Got letter from Lidl today.. the Bally Manor and organic ranges don't contain any produce from animals/poultry fed on GM feed.
To recap the others.. to avoid any produce from animals/poultry fed on GM feed ASDA and Morrisons say choose organic ranges only. Sainsbury's has a list with their GM policy on the corporate website and Waitrose doesn't allow farmers to feed GM feed to anything that will end up as an own-brand product including plain meat poultry eggs butter and milk.. Didn't ask Tesco, purveyor of pork loin steaks with sodium acetate, dried glucose syrup and 11% added water...didn't ask Aldi as no store near me.
Iceland and FarmFoods don't have organic ranges.0 -
see i was always under the believe that lentils were good for you nutritionally wise ...
this is a minefield everywhere i step i stand on an explosive ... sigh0 -
elantan - eggs would be better, eggs are as near to a perfect food that you'll find.
Ancel Keys, the guy who came up with the whole cholesterol thang did admit in later life that dietary cholesterol doesn't have anything to do with cholesterol levels because our livers make the majority of it.
So don't worry about eating eggs unless you have an allergy !0 -
Tuesdays Menu
B - Bakewell porridge
L - 6x oatcakes, Lactofree butter & Lactofree Cheese. A small bowl of peanuts. 100g cherries. ( No time to make anything else it was after 2 by time I got lunch. I plan to make some rosemary onion crackers just as soon as I get time)
D - Haddock, Cajun roasted french beans, cauliflower mash. Low Carb microwave chocolate sponge (made with unsweetened cocoa)
Drinks: Redbush tea. Water
Back from shopping and managed to stock up on ground almonds, linseed (not sure what to use this in yet), oats, peanuts, frozen raspberries, & frozen vegetables. Will do a Lidl shop later in the week to get eggs, meat & vegetables. Does anyone know when Lidl have their half price sales, is it every weekend or just certain ones?
I have a good supply of coconut oil which I bought from an asian shop when I was making my own soap. No longer make own soap so will use this as part of low carb diet.Weight loss 0/2st

durham min - With linseeds I make a hot 'porridge' type breakfast with cinnamon and protein powder. You can also include them in granola type recipes, make low carb muffins and pancakes. I found most of the recipes on the web or in Rose Elliot's book
elantan - I think lentils are lower carb than many other pulses but still quite high, probably better for when you have reached your desired weight. I am doing low carb whilst being almost completely vegan and have lost a stone in about 10 weeks. Rose Elliot and Celia Brooks Brown both do excellent recipes for low carb vegetarians.0
