I use lard all the time too , although last time i bought a basics one and it smelt awful , even the birds wouldnt touch it
Im still struggling with my craving for sweet things and its letting me down , my meals are low carb but i end up snacking on some carp or other. i thought i would buy some atkins bars to have instead, but when i went to boots to get a packet they had gone up to £6.29 for 5 bars :eek: needless to say i didnt get them
I did get some trail mix though from h0lland and b@rrat as I read on Mark Sisson's blog that primal eaters can have this occasionally what do others do for a sweet treat? ( already have berries and cream btw)
I used to eat sweet snack bars pre-primal and was eating up to 4 a day at one point  sometimes 2 at a time
I had to be very strict with myself, no sugar to start with. The first 2 days were dreadful, i had to take myself off to bed early so i didn't snap at family  After a few days i felt in control again and now i enjoy 2-3 servings of fruit a day as my treat.
I think if you have stuff other than fruit for your sweet stuff you run the risk of slipping back into bad habits. I'm an all or nothing kind of person. If i had a dessert other than fruit one day i'd want it again the next day and before i know it i'll be having 4 snack bars a day again!!I know you are right and I think part of being addicted is thinking I cant do without something sweet , or i will be miserable without it , the truth is im miserable with it as i know its so bad for me.:( I do need to give it up completely but the thought of doing that is  I need to talk myself into it
angelfeathers ive heard agave syrup is really bad too, as its nearly all fructose and apparently thats worse than glucose etc because of the damage it can cause
I felt like that as well, but once you are over a few days of being strict with yourself you will feel so pleased with yourself and that sweet tooth will be under control. you can do it. Set yourself a date to do it xx0 -
Sugar (sucrose) is half glucose, half fructose. Glucose is easily used by cells for energy and it's found in everything living, even plants. Fructose in it's natural state always comes with fibre eg an apple, a piece of sugar cane. Just because it occurs naturally doesn't mean that the body can process it easily, like glucose. Only the liver can process fructose and it does produce harmful chemicals during metabolisation. ( the whole process is shown on Dr Robert Lustig's YouTube video Sugar: The Bitter Truth')
Back when we walking around eating fruit we were getting our fructose with fibre and vitamins. Refining cane and beet sugar and producing sugar syrups etc strips out the fibre and vitamins and just leaves empty sweet calories.
High Fructose Corn Syrup wasn't available in the UK or EU in 2010. In 2012 it's over here in our food under the name glucose-fructose syrup. I don't know the percentage of fructose in that. In the US they have HFCS24, HFCS55 and HFCS90 (the numbers denote the percentage of fructose).
When we ingest this stuff the linking molecules break and we get glucose and fructose. So it's just as bad for us as sugar (sucrose) or worse, depending on the percentage of fructose - fructose being the stuff only the liver can process and the brain can't see.
It doesn't matter what it's called or how it's advertised, basically it's all bad. If you really want to frighten yourself, pick up some items in your cupboards and fridge like sauces, cereals, stock cubes.. and look for things like glucose, fructose, maltose, dextrose, sorbitol, invert sugar syrup etc.
Food with fat removed tastes bad so manufacturers add sugar and salt.
Hope that made it a bit clearer (especially if you're lurking) not more confusing !0 -
OH made a mug of hot chocolate using the Hersheys unsweetened cocoa. Imagine 90% cocoa chocolate like Lindt so dark n bitter but with a slight Galaxy flavour without the sweetness. Love it0

I hate hate hate this stuff, it gives me migrainesit's in so much stuff as well  that's what brought me to primal/paleo

Hi, I crave sugar a lot and started low carbing because I suffer from low blood sugar a lot.
Some of the things I have when I crave sugar are:
frozen raspberries blended with ground almonds,
hot chocolate or milkshake or mousse without sugar,
Rose Elliots Almond Bark - made from coconut oil, cocoa and toasted chopped almonds
plain yogurt, dessicated coconut, or a slice of melon.
90% chocolate is good but I have found when I have tried 85% that the sugar cravings come back.0 -

I have decided to go sugar/ sweetener free on monday . I am working all week so i am hoping that will help as it will reduce my capacity to get at food .
I need to plan what im having though and get some snacks sorted in case im hungry
kafcathecat i like the almond bark idea , i used do do that before but had forgotten about it , i used 85% choc so if i do it i may try 90% -wont do it this week though
going out to lunch to a relatives , i always find that difficult ( unless its a buffet) as they dont know i low carb ( cant be doing with all chuntering that will happen about my terribly unhealthy diet lol)0 -

Make sure you up your fat content, tonight and in the morning, hopefully you will feel full and satisfied enough to not even think about it.0 -
Giving up sugar and sweeteners isn't easy because sugar and sugar derivatives are everywhere so well done you for having a go sistercas :T
murphydog999 is right, upping your fat will help. You can chomp on cheese, use cream, butter, ghee and lard when cooking, eat a huge breakfast of eggs and bacon if you want and snack on pork scratchings for example.
No-one low carbing should ever feel hungry. The only thing to watch is the carbs. If you're sitting there with a lettuce leaf and teeny tub of cottage cheese - you're not doing it right.0
