The daikon/mooli recipie was from here
http://yourlighterside.com/daikon-au-gratin/
But Par boiled it first. I'm planning a shepherds pie next. I buy them from an Asian store, they're about 70-80p each. Watch out for recipies asking for 1/2 a daikon etc, as there are lots or varieties and they vary in size. The one I bought was 300g.
Did I miss Mazzers butter chicken recipie?
Thanks! How does the mooli taste when cooked? We are lucky to have a very good market in Bolton Centre - excellent odd veg
I first decided on kimchi as I saw a mooli and wanted a recipe for one of those :rotfl:

I overdid the garlic, used double cream and butter between the layers, and it tasted like the real thing to me. Hubby thought there was a slight bitter aftertaste, planning to let it sit in water for 30 mins next time. Not sure how it would taste on its own.0 -
No, Edwardia, you're definitely not the only one to use lard. I've been using it for years to make pastry etc. and now use it instead of oil to fry things in too, especially if I'm cooking for DH as he doesn't like the smell/taste of coconut oil.
JM2926, daikon dauphinoise sounds interesting! Not sure I could get the rest of the family to try it, but I might!
Another rather decadent recipe for those who aren't trying to go desperately low on carbs (or who want a treat): http://www.elanaspantry.com/double-chocolate-orange-torte (hope the link works!) I made it the other day subbing melted butter for the grapeseed oil and reducing the agave and it's absolutely luscious. Very rich so I've made mine into 10 portions rather than 6, which means one slice only has c. 18 carbs in it. As I said, not tremendously low-carb, but not bad and definitely worth it, imo! :-)I'm broke, not poor. Poor sounds permanent, broke can be fixed. (Thoroughly Modern Millie)

on the lard..18 carbs a slice is definitely not low carb
two slices of that would be more than half my daily carb allowance.
I'm lucky in that I don't have a sweet tooth and would choose prawns over cheesecake but I appreciate that it's really tough for others. However I just couldn't eat sweet stuff now, even Heinz cream of tomato soup tastes sweet to me now eww.
Are you all craving the sweet white poison ?
B - Two free range eggs fried in ghee with button mushrooms
L - Responsibly sourced (whatever that means) Scottish salmon steak from Sainsbury's. Back in December I bought a whole salmon reduced to 14.27 in Sainsbury's and had the fishmonger steak it up for me (twelve thick steaks) leeks, asparagus.0 -
I don't crave sugar at all in it's hard form. I was eating a lot of Braeburn apples a day....usually 4-6 and missed them for a couple of days, but now I'm into my lcbing I am neither hungry nor craving anything.
Edwardia I found an option for english on the site, so don't have to translate! Here are a few different recipes....some may use potatoes, but I find they can easily be replaced.

I use lard all the time too , although last time i bought a basics one and it smelt awful , even the birds wouldnt touch it
Im still struggling with my craving for sweet things and its letting me down , my meals are low carb but i end up snacking on some carp or other. i thought i would buy some atkins bars to have instead, but when i went to boots to get a packet they had gone up to £6.29 for 5 bars :eek: needless to say i didnt get them
I did get some trail mix though from h0lland and b@rrat as I read on Mark Sisson's blog that primal eaters can have this occasionally what do others do for a sweet treat? ( already have berries and cream btw)0 -
dundeedoll thank you for the link
sistercas if you go online to www.boots.com you'll find that some Atkins products are 50% off and others 25% off online only. I imagine they haven't been selling as so expensive. I've seen them in ASDA too so if you have a store nearby you could check out their prices - Boots is expensive. Personally, I didn't like the look of all the bulking agents etc in the Atkins bars.
Boots does diabetic sweets and chocolate and they may be marginally healthier. Might also encourage you not to eat too many as they can have a laxative effect. Sainsbury's also sell sugar free sweets in some stores but again, watch out for the laxative effect.
I'm not trying to be mean here, I'm trying to help.
If you crave sweet things constantly though and give into the craving, you aren't getting over the sugar addiction. If you eat sugar free substitutes and lose the weight, as soon as you've reached target weight, you'll relax and start eating the cr*p and the weight wil creep up.
My advice would be to concentrate on beating the sugar craving by cutting everything sugary completely and having things like houmous or cottage cheese and carrots or pistachio nuts or a piece of Brie when you feel the need to munch.
Dr Robert Lustig has done an excellent series on YouTube called The Skinny on Obesity and he talks about the addiction to sugar in those. Food manufacturers add sugar to everything because we get addicted to it. Why put sugar or variants of in tomato soup, toothpaste, pork loin steaks, burgers otherwise ?

I've had to quit being naughty as eating ice cream or eating crisps make me throw up so personally I'm doing pistachios and buying salted and unsalted mixed nuts and seeds. We have a Victorian glass sweets jar and they all get chucked in there and shaken about so the overall salt content is a bit lower.0 -

Heh, yeah, I know it's not *that* low carb, that's why I said it was for those who aren't that strict. I've been checking out my own carb intake the last week or so and I seem to average between 70 and 100g a day. I know that's outrageously high for some, but I'm slowly losing weight on it, and I only have another stone or so to lose anyway, and I don't see myself going back to eating 'normally' ever. So I've got the rest of my life to lose that stone. I could be stricter if I wanted to be, but at this level, I'm getting what I wanted both from losing and from treats so it's working for me.
I know I'm lucky in that I don't have any medical conditions that mean I have to *really* low carb. Though I'm pretty damn sure I wasn't far off diabetic had I continued eating 'normally'.
And although I crave sweet things, it's not *really* sweet things because I've never liked things that were too sweet anyway. And I very rarely eat real sugar any more. When I'm baking I use agave or coconut/palm sugar, or fruit. Which, yeah, still sweet, but better than the pure white stuff. *g*I'm broke, not poor. Poor sounds permanent, broke can be fixed. You might want to check on the agave. In the view of some it's worse for you than sucrose/ honey/ maple syrup or even HFCS because agave is 90% fructose, which consumed in excess is linked to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The fructose in fruit is usually balanced by fibre and in the other sweeteners listed by glucose (even HFCS is only 55% fructose) - not the case in the highly processed agave syrup.Eat food. I know you are right and I think part of being addicted is thinking I cant do without something sweet , or i will be miserable without it , the truth is im miserable with it as i know its so bad for me.:( I do need to give it up completely but the thought of doing that is  I need to talk myself into it
angelfeathers ive heard agave syrup is really bad too, as its nearly all fructose and apparently thats worse than glucose etc because of the damage it can cause0
