    Morning all :)
Went shopping and bought a cheese alternative, it's a creamy 'cheese'(like Philly) with garlic and herbs. Carbs is 6.7 per 100g so I guess in moderation it will be ok. in my bid to expand my taste buds I bought some celery to dip into it(hope celery is low carb lol) 'cheese' is good altough it contains soybean and tofu which I guess is not ideal BUT if it gets me into the habbit of eating celery I can maybe ditch it in a few weeks.

Out of curiosity who weighs, who meaures and who does both?(themself that is)

Hi Devildog, well done on your smugness :) I often find myself tutting at other people's trolleys :embarasse, however the 'alternative' cheese, low-carb or not, is not going to be the best thing since sliced bread (not a good term to use on this thread!!). As natural as it can be - or is meant to be - should be going round your head as you shop, if it's got 3 or more ingredients - preferably just the one - then put it back.

I weigh myself every morning, then I can tell if certain foods have had an effect. For a change, I had a nearly all protein day yesterday (apart from a few strawbs and some dark chocolate and asparagus - not on the same plate!) and dropped nearly a pound. For lunch, I had 12 asparagus spears with a double cream and blue cheese sauce and a fried in butter egg on top, it was SO good. I love this way of eating :j

Thanks everyone re nitrates/nitrites - very helpful. I vaguely remember a year or two ago, some young scientist was being interviewed and was asked if they could just give one piece of advice what would it be - their answer was "don't eat ham". Perhaps this is why??:)

murphydog999 - OH and I are considering buying gammon joints, doing our own ham and freezing in portions.

murphydog999 and gloomendoom - Weleda salt toothpaste tastes salty if you're used to sweetened toothpastes and/or sugary food. My dentist recommended it, he doesn't believe in putting un-necessary chemicals in the mouth.

Our water isn't fluoridised locally, it's spring water with added chlorine (required by law to prevent bacteria build up in pipes).

If governments can get dietary advice so wrong I wonder about what else they get wrong. Eleven European countries have rejected the whole idea of fluoridation, Finland stopped doing it and estimates of countries fluorising water vary from 14-60 out of the entire world so a tiny percentage.

If our spring water becomes fluoridised I will buy big containers of bottled water for cooking and hot drinks. I'm not fussed whether it's fluoridised or not.

I don't weigh at all because weight can fluctuate so much because of water gain/loss. When my GP weighs me he just does it for his records, he knows I want to hear if I've lost a substantial number of pounds but otherwise not. I measure when I buy new clothes because sizes vary in shops.

devildog, I do notice that my trolley does look different from other peoples' but I don't care if they're wondering why I'm buying lard and double cream :) If anyone was rude enough to comment, they'd regret it. :rotfl:

As for individual diets, I don't eat additives of any kind now and try to buy organic and wild whenever poss. But if other people want to buy Atkins bars or soya flour or stuff which is low carb but has additives that's up to them. Ultimately we have to eat in a manner which is sustainable for us as individuals or we won't carry on low carbing.

sweaty betty - could be the reason - Prosciutto di Parma is just pork and salt. :)

Thanks everyone you are all so helpful :D
Daska- I was sat with 'cheese' celery, glass of water and a little heap of salt lol. Struggling with the fat(and def need to drink more) What is marigold buillon, do I need to make some or buy some? (omg aren't I rubbish!)
murphydog I hear you re the additives and totally agree I am just trying to break myself in to alien veg/salad with something I do like(in the hope that I will be able to move on and just eat things like celery by themselves so to speak) Can't be many vegetarians that don't like veg! I bought some organic dark chocolate too(72%) and that had 7 ingredients in, am I bad? I thought that was Ok? LOL I feel so hopeless/hapless;)

Edwardia-my trolley looks so empty at the checkout, if I was only spending less to match the volume. It is true that 'proper' food is so much more expensive than the carb/sugar/additive stuff. It should be the other way around, what they lose in selling wil be made up for in improved health(less medical costs) etc.

1 - Don't worry about the fluoride and your teeth. If you want to do something positive then dairy can be very protective, try finishing each meal with a small amount of cheese.

2 - watch THIS. I know I keep posting it all over the place but it's a fab lecture.

Thanks for the link Daska. I've just sat and watched the lecture and found it really interesting! I've forwarded it onto my dad (who does Atkins) as he will love the results! x

Fantastic amount of links! I have bookmarked them, thank you to all who posted them.I had to go back to page 256 to catch up,and boy has the thread been busy..brilliantly busy may I add.

Mercy- I gave up ciggies about a year and a half ago,had been doing well with LC and exercise. I put on half a stone that still will not budge.I was quite disheartened which perhaps lead to the lapse in LC.
I am slowly getting back to where I was(eating & exercise).I do wonder what the lack of nicotine does and how it may contribute to weight/bloating.

Breakfast- Tuna mayo salad with rocket and swetcorn
    Lunch- The same as above
Dinner- Sausages with roasted peppers, green beans and more rocket and maybe some gooey cheese.

Really need to go shopping, don't think sweetcorn is very LC but the cupboards are a bit bare:o.

Devildog you're not rubbish or hopeless. If you're confused then it's our fault. :o

So let's break this down in to easier bites.

You're a vegetarian who doesn't like veg (okaaay, bit weird but I lived next to a Frenchman who didn't like wine soo it happens) and you have a dairy allergy.

Re: the veg, suggest you make a list of all the veggies you can bear and go to the GI index on www.glycemicindex.com put them in the search engine and it will show you how carby the veg you like are (anything under 10g carbs per 100g is good) and how high they are on the glycemic index - anything under 55 is low.

The index basically shows how fast that food will send your sugar up. So when you've written the numbers down by the veg you need to prioritise the lowest ones and eat less of the higher ones. You can do the same with fruit. This matters because low glycemic foods need less insulin so in time the level of insulin in your body will fall. Less insulin means you can start losing weight.

Re: the dairy allergy basically the best tolerated are butter, cheese and yogurt and the least tolerated, milk.

Lactofree is filtered semi-skimmed or whole milk with much of the lactose removed (making it less carby and less likely to upset you). It may not be any cheaper than milk alternatives but IF you do OK with it, anytime you see it on offer you can buy it and freeze it. Soya milk won't include the lactose-digesting enzyme and help you eat other dairy and may not freeze ??? Milk alternatives are often carby cos they contain apple or grape juice to sweeten them.

If you can eat cheese, suggest buying lots. It will give you protein and fat.
It doesn't matter which cheese really.

As a veggie you probably won't want to use lard or dripping so suggest ghee, clarified butter and any pure veggie oils NOT blended vegetable oil.

Nuts and seeds are good if you eat them. Beans and pulses are generally carby but you can check them on the GI index. The only veg I suggest excluding totally are potatoes, sweet potatoes and corn.

Most veggie ready made meals are carby. If you are happy to eat Quorn there are lots which aren't.

Recommend Celia Brooks Brown's low carb vegetarian cook book and Lidl for cheap decent veg.

Hope that helps if not please yell :D xx

schoolhouse - you're welcome ;) and no sweet corn though yummy is higher carb

Are you sure about that? Flouride is routinely added to the mains drinking water supply in many areas, including the UK and USA.

    Hiya!

Yep, flouride is warned against on toothpaste AND routinely added to the water supply. Go figure :rotfl: It's all about the money.
