Another pincushion session for me tomorrow. yes doc has me on liver function tests every 2 weeks atm. My theory is that since nothing I eat now is more than -10 on the Mildly Inflammatory section of the IF diet index, the likely reason for the drop in liver enzymes over last 4 weeks is due to giving up sweeteners, diet Pepsi and food with additives eg ham, coleslaw, sausages, mayonnaise, Tesco pork chops....0 -
Hi there - well the good news for me this morning is that I've lost 2kg of the 3kg I put on last week. Am wondering if it was water retention or something after all...
Following your advice I've been looking for nitrate free meat and can also find nothing but parma ham (not a problem as I love it!). Just wanted to ask though - is the nitrate thing related to low carb, or "just" living more healthily?

Edwardia - you are all good at ferreting out very useful information. At the moment I am trying to work out how to balance thyroid with cholesterol and low carb. So much contradicts itself, no fluoride for thyroid as it is taken up instead of iodine and mimics but will it make my teeth bad if I cut it out as I only have 15 left!; many veg and nuts contraindicated for thyroid as they suppress uptake but will limit diet even more and I don't know if I could sustain the diet; cut out saturated fat for cholesterol but I need it to do low carb diet etc. For the moment I am trying to keep the saturated fat below 35g so it limits coconut oil, butter and cream but olive oil is ok. Even walnuts and almonds are good on some websites for thyroid and bad on others!!! Enough said!!
I hope that the blood results are better and they can find your veins!

I do wonder how big a part chemicals play in any of the chronic diseases, cancers and allergies that so many of us suffer from. They have to be tested not to be immediately toxic to be passed safe, that's all.
sheila54 - your teeth won't fall out if you stop using fluoride toothpaste. In the USA, if you've swallowed more than a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste they recommend calling your local CDC (Center for Disease Control) to get advice because fluoride is pretty toxic. I use Weleda salt toothpaste (2.62 from Lloyds Pharmacy).
It is important for you to try really hard to research the thyroid condition and not eat foods which are known to affect that adversely.
A low carb diet is not a low fat diet. On a low carb diet, even eating more fat, your cholesterol profile should improve even if total cholesterol goes up.
Quit worrying about saturated fat. Quit worrying about calories. PLEASE, before I get grey hairs fretting about you.0 -

Re. meats, good butchers and farm shops that do their own hams won't have the need for preserving chemicals as the turnover is higher and they don't have the need for long-term shelf packaging.

It is no good taking 1 single level as a measure for cholesterol, apart from HDL and LDL readings there are different categories in both, that are both good and bad! What you really need to know is your triglyceride level (a much better marker for heart disease than cholesterol), specifically the ratio of triglycerides to HDL.
Triglyceride levels always come down on a low-carb diet - the body's excess sugar is packaged into triglycerides, so the less sugar in the body the lower the levels.
Sheila, do you know your triglyceride to HDL level, by any chance?

Morning all
Yesterday I felt so unbelievably tired, mid-day I was struggling to keep my eyes open, head hurt it was hot blah blah. Keep telling myself today is a new day. Went shopping and bought a cheese alternative, it's a creamy 'cheese'(like Philly) with garlic and herbs. Carbs is 6.7 per 100g so I guess in moderation it will be ok. in my bid to expand my taste buds I bought some celery to dip into it(hope celery is low carb lol) 'cheese' is good altough it contains soybean and tofu which I guess is not ideal BUT if it gets me into the habbit of eating celery I can maybe ditch it in a few weeks.
I must confess that I felt quite smug walking around the supermarket with relatively few products in my trolley but what was in it was pretty healthy stuff.
Thanks for the tip on white tea, something else to go on my list to try. Did buy some more almond milk but it remains unopened at moment. Whenever I make a drink my hand automatically goes to the fridge for milk and then I stop myself.
Out of curiosity who weighs, who meaures and who does both?(themself that is)0 -

1 - Don't worry about the fluoride and your teeth. If you want to do something positive then dairy can be very protective, try finishing each meal with a small amount of cheese.

Are you eating enough fat and salt and drinking enough? They are the most likely culprits for you feeling headachy and tired. Try a cup of marigold bouillon instead of tea to up that salt, you really do need to eat more for the first few weeks at least while your sodium levels adjust. And try some coconut oil or butter if you can cope with that - lots of people who can't eat dairy can cope with butter.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

Flouride is routinely added to the mains drinking water supply in many areas, including the UK and USA.Chronic toxicity from fluoride ingestion is rare in the UK and other developed countries. The principal sources of potentially excessive fluoride intake are drinking water, in areas where levels are naturally high, and toothpaste ingestion.
US guidance suggests that the tolerable upper limit for fluoride ingestion is 10 mg per day.
Most public water supplies in the UK contain less than 0.7 mg/L fluoride; 10% of supplies are fluoridated to a level of 1.0 mg/L (1 part per million fluoride – ppmF).
Standard over-the-counter adult toothpastes contain between 1,000 ppmF and 1,500 ppmF. There are two toothpastes, available only on prescription, with fluoride contents above 1,500 ppmF. They are Duraphatâ 2800 (2,800 ppmF) and Duraphatâ 5000 (5,000 ppmF).
A 70 kg adult, who does not expectorate (spit) after brushing, could ingest a total of 10 mg fluoride by swallowing 2.0 ml of Duraphatâ 5000 toothpaste, assuming a fluoride free water supply, or 1.7 ml Duraphatâ 5000 toothpaste plus 1.5 litres water containing 1 ppmF.
Caution is required if high-strength fluoride toothpastes are used in people who may swallow rather than expectorate after toothbrushing.
