It's a bit like saying smoking is good for you as long as you avoid cigarettes...
Personally I know for sure that my blood sugars would be elevated and I'd be ravenous and !!!!!y as hell if I tried to eat this diet.
Aw sweetie daska!
If you ate that you'd need lots of meds and you'd become a er.... cash cow? ow that's just NOT RIGHT!
Smoking without using tobacco is a good strategy, if one choses to smoke

LOL, well I thought vaping would be better option so I bought DS2's dad an Ego for Xmas, but he's still obviously committed to the nasty ones. Are you getting used to it?Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

nuttybabe, I love you.
Think you meant low carb veg
Anyway, you got it sorted. Low fat does generally mean more sugar. Grains - cereal, bread, wheat flour (or even gluten free) products like pastry, all leave a mark on the blood sugars.
Sadly 'Diabetes UK' the biggest diabetes charity in UK, still give out the 'big carbs with every meal' advice.
Imagine if everyone who had type 2 diabetes got the right advice.
Diabetes UK would have nothing much to do.......
No wonder they peddle this 'filth' (filth in this situation is telling ordinary people that eating many carbs with every meal will help you if you have type 2 diabetes). If they told the truth they'd pretty soon all be out of a job
Well.

i said high carb veg as the guidelines for diabetics are to eat carbs with your meal. but my point was if you are eating carbs because you are diabetic surely it would be healthy carbs like veg and wholemeal stuff. i dont understand why diabetics would risk it, its a more serious problem than my asthma and i do what i can to reduce that. cant you go blind if you are diabetic?
i have just done a level 2 childcare course and the healthy eating was the eatwell plate. so if i do get a job in childcare, any food i prepare should be made to those guidelines.
daska - i would be starving on that diet. when i did slimming world 20 years  ago it was around the time they stopped counting fruit as syns. when i did the veggie day (so i could eat as much pasta as i want) i was starving all day as i just ate pasta and fruit constantly. i didnt lose weight!0 -

Oh gosh, I'd be drummed out for what I serve DS2. Having finally got past the wanting pasta at every meal tonight was fishfingers and peas and a nice crunchy carrot - I figured sandwiches and jaffa cakes at the school picnic was probably more than enough carbohydrate even for DS2's extreme level of energy expenditure - tomorrow will be a burger and broccoli. He sleeps so much better now than ever before that I can identify a subtle difference of when he's been carb loaded at supper - he really doesn't sleep as soundly.
And ironically, whilst I know I would be in physical pain on the sample menu I posted above, if someone looked at what I've actually eaten today they'd think it far less. I've had:
B: a cup of redbush with coconut oil and cinnamon - won't be repeating that experiment, it was vile, might try it with coffee though.
L: a cup of coffee with cocoa powder and cream
S: 2 fish fingers and a lump of cheddar
it's far less than I usually eat but I'm still less hungry than if I'd carbed up according to the advice from diabetesUK
(Should point out that no veg is very unusual but I'm currently in payback for wasting energy on monday so I hadn't had the energy or enthusiasm to go shopping - and then my carer was an hour late so there wasn't time to ask her to go for me. Yesterday I didn't even have the energy to stand around while the kettle boiled, so sat down and forgot LOL)Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

so what sort of stuff do you give your ds2?
i have been wondering about my kids. they are 7, 6 and 4. Bearing in mind their father has lots of carbs so they tend to eat the same. they have cereal or toast for breakfast (i did get them having omelette for a while but it didnt last although i can push it again if you think i should), ham sandwich for lunch with raisens, cheese block, jelly or homemade yogurt and for tea they have the same as me but with potatoes or pasta. they are not overweight and are very active. i do notice if they have high sugar they go loopy. especially ds1, if he has coco pops his eyes go funny and then he is like a whirlwind! obviously i dont want to put them on a diet (i know how that can damage a child) and have cut down on their potatoes and upped their veggies without them noticing but i dont want them getting bad habbits now that will carry on later in life.0 -

I'm doing well. Had last nastie yesterday mornFolk keeping saying - oh you doin so well! - Thing is i don't feel deprived or like i've quit anything. Did slide into stopping tobacco over 2 weeks. Last week just not smokin baki at work, this week not smokin at all. 'This week' = since yesterday
LOLs
I don't expect i'll ever buy tobacco again, can't say I won't ever smoke a fag again - I'm likely drunk this weekend  But if I don't have tobacco in the house I'll have to just vape
This sound like LC to anyone else?
I'm putting the 'don't have it - can't have it' to good use
Hoping to keep that up there

i dont talk to people about lcing for that very reason , the only people who know are my immediate family ( Dds and DH ) and my best friend , , if we go to family for meals its invariably a buffet and i can pick and choose , or if we go out i choose a carvery so my plate is piled with meat and veg ( and cauli chesse
) people generally dont notice as they are far too busy with their own lives anyway
thats why this thread is so important - an avenue for like minded people to learn and share together , and i have learned so much from all of you and been given links to read and books recommended :T it really helps
The reaction I normally get is "ooh you just gorge on meat on that diet don't you, how can you eat all that meat?" while I sit there with a small ham salad and them with their greasy tasteless sausage roll....
Its frustrating but my response to the resistant is something along these lines:
I suffer from the following terribly on this diet...disgustingly healthy blood pressure (about 115/75) pulse dropped from mid 70's to mid 60's per min, a total absence of heartburn, I've completely lost my IBS, oh and I've lost 2.5 stone (or wherever I am at that time) terrible diet this is, awful....:rotfl:Let's get ready to bumble! :rotfl:0 -
Mercy, well done. One day at a time and you've done it with low carb so have the willpower
smeeinnit - well done on the weight loss :T. I have tried to explain to people that this is a lifestyle choice that is made for health but they have been indoctrinated by the hype when Atkins first started.
Good to see so many people posting and understanding where we all come from.0 -
Gosh you've all been busy posting so I may have to do this in chunks..
mummyofboys, I'd suggest trying the Lindt Excellence 90% cocoa chocolate. Only 14g carbs per 100g bar. Yes, it does seem bitter at first but if you end up liking the taste you'll never go back to Cadbury's Dairy Milk..
daska re: ghee I bought Khanum pure butter ghee without ethyl butyrate from spicesofindia.co.uk I spoke to them on the phone and evidently the factory scrubs out then makes batches for them, which might explain why all the other brands I've seen all have ethyl butyrate. It tastes much like the crust on Rodda clotted cream mmm
smeeinnit..are they generally gobsmacked when you tell them that ?
Mercy - my 60 a day uncle and 40 a day husband gave up and if they can do it, anyone can. I was a 20 a day for awhile as OH smoked but gave up with Nicorette patches free from GP about eight years ago. Thanks for the kind words xx
daska & Mercy what annoys me most about the healthcare professionals' attitude to diabetes is that before oral meds, the ONLY way to control Type 2 was by low carbing and it was used for umpteen years. I have found that once you say I low carb, some HCPs go off the record and say it's a good idea. They aren't allowed to go off piste against NHS advice officially.
If Ancel Keys wasn't dead I'd have him No1 on a hit list, this whole low fat mantra is because of his completely flawed research.
Cider vinegar.. I've decided to make a salad dressing rather than stand in the kitchen trying to take it with a teaspoon eww .According to Healing Foods by Mirium Polunin which I just bought, walnuts are a good source of vitamin B6 which helps blood sugar control so I'm going to put walnut oil on my shopping list and see what the walnut oil + EV olive oil + cider vinegar and black pepper dressing tastes like.
Another book I bought is about Ayurveda Indian medicine. I'm not into homeopathic medicine like my mother on the other hand I'll happily chuck a few seeds in a dish eg methi (fenugreek) seeds and see what happens.
Kids need so much energy I think if I had any, I'd try to give them slow carbs, no sweets or crisps, no cakes, digestive biscuits, reduced salt & sugar baked beans, reduced sugar & salt tomato ketchup, and try and make veg imaginative..
sheila54 I agree nice to see more people posting0 -

Hi daska! I'll not try that then:)
I've got off the caffeine wagon very easily. At work me n 1 other used to drink coffee from a percolator all day (min 12 months of doing this 5 times a day - quite strong). about 5 months ago I said 'no more'. I still have a fully caffeinated coffee brew in the morn before I leave but went onto green tea at work.
Did not have a caffeine withdrawal time at all. There's a bit of caffeine in green tea but not as much as in normal tea. I've just got on with that since. I (am) was a great friend of caffeine but green tea is sweeter as natural and after the first week I've never looked back. Never used a sweetener. Did alternate with another tea, Twinings - cleanse- don't buy into the 'cleanse' bit of it but it is nice and quite sweet on it's own.
Considering quite how fond of caffeine I still remain - I do not understand other folks probs with cutting 80% of it out. I do love the rush but don't miss it. Maybe it's because I can separate sections of my life? I am now a positive Angel at work :A
No caffeine (except 1 each morning during the week and about 3 at weekends from coffy) but just 3 green teabags a weekday isn't much is it?), no sugar, no sweeteners, no cigarettes ()
Sectioning isn't available to all as easily. But we could all use this idea in some way, just have to be inventive.
Big love
