I think you are...firstly it's IF not IT
But i only did it briefly, i've been talking about it but not got back into it yet.
You can eat normally, just not as often as usual, for me, it's about not getting any insulin response for several hours as thats what stores the fat, and my blood glucose seems high even when i'm lc-ing.
I can be pretty disciplined in work so think that maybe have two fasting days a week on workdays and enjoy my days off (sensibly of course!)
mazzers Sorry I slipped up as in a hurry. I really am not criticising, just trying to understand as it has seemed to cause problems with windows etc.
What you say makes sense and I have read the blurb posted. I am lucky not have diabetes and, if it helps to lose weight and regulate your insulin, then it is worth it. sistercas I can see where you are coming from but I think I like my food too much!!!
Sunnyday - so sorry to hear about your problems, big hugs xx
Edwardia - most people that I speak to ask how I have managed to lose so much weight but, when you tell them, get all het up about it. I think that I am going to ask my GP for a cholesterol test when I have my thyroid bloods done next month just to prove them wrong!
It feels like we are all protesters trying to uphold the cause!!!0 -
Sorry to hear about your loss Sunnyday it's terrible to lose a beloved pet, I know (((Sunnyday)))
daska, once I feel a bit better I'll go see GP and get him to swap Amaryl (glimeperide) and Januvia (sitagliptin) for Prandin (repaglinide).
Amaryl is a sulfyronea (herbicide !) causes hypos and is associated with increase in heart attacks.
Januvia is a DPP-4 inhibitor which raises cancer risks.
Prandin has less heart attack risk and works by raising insulin only in response to food whereas Amaryl raises insulin levels for 12 hrs
My theory is that if I let my beta cells recover from glimeperide and use a drug which mimics natural response to food, then I'll stabilise.
At the moment I feel that there's too much insulin sloshing around in my blood and it makes me more insulin resistant.
I'm stressed so much of the blood glucose in my blood is from glycogen liver dumps so the Metformin does work for me to lessen that. I've tested and that's the only drug that makes a definite difference. It's heart protective and in a recent study it seems it might be cancer protective and not just for people with diabetes.
I will probably leave MSE shortly as I'm fed up with people on other threads attacking me for being a low carber. I don't know why other people are so concerned about my arteries furring up lol
I hope the change of meds goes well, fingers crossed for you.
I just got attacked for pointing out, in response to comments suggesting that improving sport in school would deal with the obesity epidemic, that exercise (alone) is pretty ineffective for weightloss and to tackle the obesity epidemic we really need to address a diet which relies on eating crap food with not enough nutrients and too many carbs. I wasn't even suggesting low carb, just that people are eating too many. I really can't see how that should be controversial except that people choose to read that I advocate not exercising (not true, just can't do it myself) and are convinced that weightloss must be difficult because they find it difficult because they're not listening to their body.
I'm addressing my health and weight by a. listening to my body and b. learning how it works and I have fewer health problems as a direct result (that's measurable cos when I start eating 'badly' the problems come back), and the weight is coming off easily as a result. If I'm hungry I eat, if I'm thirsty I drink, I just don't eat and drink the things which my body tells me it doesn't like either because it doesn't like the taste or the effect.Eat food. daska, looking at the bigger picture, the world doesn't seem able to feed itself properly and the situation would be worse if there wasn't so much mass production.
The stark reality is that surrounded my mass produced food as we are, good healthy food costs money and that therefore the people who eat it are either those with higher incomes or those who make a conscious effort to put their food as a top priority.
Problem is, that consumerism is so entrenched that families see nothing wrong with having bare unvarnished floorboards and feeding their kids baked beans and chips as long as they get their flatscreen TV, tshirts advertising designer labels, cigarettes and booze. Having worked in poor areas for a charity that's me seeing it myself, not reading the Guardian.
I'm more and more feeling who cares what other people eat, I'm alright Jack.0 -
Entirely agree, it is very expensive to eat well. I live in an area that is acknowledged to be one of the most poverty stricken in the UK. When you look through trolleys the emphasis is on cheap calories which are invariably high carb, processed, long life, ersatz. Our 'farmer's market' is 4 stalls selling veg, dairy, eggs and meat. I pick up my regular order for unpasteurised, unhomogenised milk and cream there at double the price of the supermarket nasty stuff, but the organic eggs are £1.60 for 4 and the girl on that stall invariably has a huge pile left at the end of the morning. The supermarket does stock a small amount of organic food but demand is very low. But no one seems to do without a smartphone...

i dont post on threads very often regarding low carb as i know the response you get.
i used to get a lot of grief off people especially family about it but since carbs set off my asthma i find it easier just to say that rather than i do it to lose/be healthy etc.
when i go to my sisters i generally have to prepare my own food or i have food minus the carbs that they have prepared. interesting when i had pizza! when they did a roast i was given 2 small slices of chicken and a bit of broccoli so did ask if i could have more! but dont you find most of the people critisising are large themselves. Not 1 skinny person has ever disagreed with me!0 -
I have had skinny people disagree with me but you're right, it's rarer. I wonder whether it's because large people have been on the receiving end of conventional dogma for so long that they are incapable of seeing past it or possibly that accepting lc might work and be healthy might mean that what they have tried has been a waste of their time and effort?Eat food. as an example, my mum is large and diabetic and still wont low carb. she has done all the diets under the sun (even tablets) except low carb but wont because its unhealthy. i have bought her countless diabetic cookbooks but she wont use any cos she likes her sugar too much. and she still buys everything low fat even though it is packed with sugar.
makes me laugh when people tell me i am unhealthy and then they are taking 3 slimfast shakes a day with no food and think that is healthy!!! lol0 -
i dont talk to people about lcing for that very reason , the only people who know are my immediate family ( Dds and DH ) and my best friend , , if we go to family for meals its invariably a buffet and i can pick and choose , or if we go out i choose a carvery so my plate is piled with meat and veg ( and cauli chesse
) people generally dont notice as they are far too busy with their own lives anyway
thats why this thread is so important - an avenue for like minded people to learn and share together , and i have learned so much from all of you and been given links to read and books recommended :T it really helps0 -
hi all!
Edwardia - Please don't leave MSE altogether, we do appreciate you and you have some lively and interesting things to say. Talking to other people about LC will only work if they are open minded.
Most folk with diabetes are told to eat carbs at every meal by their trusted medical practitioners. General Govt guidelines advocate mucho carbs for all, to be healthy. Brainwashed folk also have a carb/sugar habit. They do not want to give up their fixes and the Doctor knows best  so it is easier to put you down when you do mention it.
I generally mention my choices if asked or if it comes up in conversation. Then leave it until someone actually wants to know. I do not argue. 'Well that may be ok for you but it doesn't work for me'.
In my family I am lucky. When my Mum needed to lose at least 2 stone to be comfortable when she had her hip replacement, she lost 3st using low carb ways. My Dad first suggested food combining to me 20 + years ago. My sister, who is a larger lady, fully understands that LC works but also knows herself well enough to say 'I just love carbs too much'. My Brother and his partner are both veggies. My other Bro is vaguely normalNone of us push stuff on each other but do share experiences.
One exception was sending Sista stuff on aspartame. She now has full fat coke in her rum when we go out. :rotfl:
So, anyway, Edwardia Do keep in touch and keep us informed on your findings. I like your experimenting attitude - bit like that misel.
Big love
