as an example, my mum is large and diabetic and still wont low carb. she has done all the diets under the sun (even tablets) except low carb but wont because its unhealthy. i have bought her countless diabetic cookbooks but she wont use any cos she likes her sugar too much. and she still buys everything low fat even though it is packed with sugar.

makes me laugh when people tell me i am unhealthy and then they are taking 3 slimfast shakes a day with no food and think that is healthy!!! lol

That's really sad, and of course backed-up by the medical community. Unfortunately this doctrine is so intrenched it is far too late to reverse, one example is supermarkets.

They would be 1/4 of their size if you took all the crap out, processed food factories (there are 2 down the road from me) would close, the likes of McDonalds would go out of business, all these have big unemployment and finance implications; the whole shopping experience would change - can anyone see this happening?

Hello again you lovely low carbers, you!

I've read through most of what's been going on but not posted much as too busy stopping smoking faaags. LOL. Going down the electric cig route and there's lots to learn. Haven't had a filthy since yesterday morn so all good so far :) :rotfl::A:j:beer:

H&B have a 'buy 1 get 1 for a penny - mix n match' type thing going on if you're interested.

I do buy the odd thing here and joined their loyalty card plan. They send vouchers for stuff and a £s off voucher based on previous buys. I think you get bonanza points on joining so may be useful if you do use then at all. Includes in shop and online.

I get coconut oil, coQ10 when on serious offer, and vit C, sometimes K2.
Also got a voucher for almost 1/2 price ground flax this month. Great for BIL who's basically rubbish (;)) but has diverticular disease and really should be using flax :) He was well pleased and now i'll follow up with 'what did you make?' :rotfl: Got another voucher for £1 vitamin drink. Was nice and relatively LC (3.5g/100ml) Packed with alsorts.

    Just a thort :)

Er, no. All we can do is vote with our £s. That's what matters at the end of the day (to folk who want our £s)

Supermarkets would not have a problem as they'd be selling more of the other stuff.

Don't forget the political implications of having a country in which everybody is clear headed, doesn't need meds much, has more energy, can't be put down by 'scientific research' changing the rules all the time.

    ANARCHY!

They just don't want us to all be well. Well people with energy would start start trouble :D:rotfl::T

If I do the 'low carb thing' it's generally just for a few days (a week at the most) - say after a small period of binge eating/drinking. Long term I don't think it's that healthy (as with most 'diets').

As someone else touched upon - some of this sweetener stuff is more than a bit dodgy. Aspartame, Splenda etc. Hell! That kind of crap can be worse for you than refined sugar in most cases.

    Hi sweetie!

Many folk LC without the use of sweeteners :)

Out of interest, what do you think is unhealthy about low carbing?

The myth of eggs has been well refuted

    http://www.nhs.uk/news/2009/02February/Pages/Eggsafety.aspx

The myth of saturated fat being bad for the heart has been refuted

Low carb isn't NO CARB :rotfl: We all eat at least 40% of our food as vegetables. That's why we're generally healthier :)

No pastry, spuds, pasta, bread doesn't kill you.

Mostly Pastry, Spuds, Pasta, Bread may well make that sad death more likely, sooner.

I dont know about diabeties i admit, i keep meaning to look into it more but what little i have read i have learnt that low carb appears to be best for it. and i thought diabetics had to cut out sugar, so all food with high sugar in was out. low fat usually is high sugar so surely you are better off having the full fat version? and even if you do have carbs with every meal, surely you would go for healthy carbs like brown pasta/rice or high carb veg???? but like i said, i dont know much about it. although with how my hubby is going i think i will probably be learning a lot about it in the future! :(

    nuttybabe, I love you.

Think you meant low carb veg

Anyway, you got it sorted. Low fat does generally mean more sugar. Grains - cereal, bread, wheat flour (or even gluten free) products like pastry, all leave a mark on the blood sugars.

Sadly 'Diabetes UK' the biggest diabetes charity in UK, still give out the 'big carbs with every meal' advice.

Imagine if everyone who had type 2 diabetes got the right advice.

Diabetes UK would have nothing much to do.......

No wonder they peddle this 'filth' (filth in this situation is telling ordinary people that eating many carbs with every meal will help you if you have type 2 diabetes). If they told the truth they'd pretty soon all be out of a job :)

    Well.

You'd have thought so wouldn't you but no, the standard advice dished out all over the country is that pasta is good and so are baked potatos and so is fruit juice, just so long as you avoid 'sugar'. It's a bit like saying smoking is good for you as long as you avoid cigarettes...

Here's a sample menu based on me, 40+, 15st, inactive, trying to lose weight:

Day menu planner - Menu C
Your requirements have been estimated from the data you entered. Your sample daily menu is below. Remember that this is only a guide and a starting point to help you with portion sizes. Foods in the menu plan can be interchanged - it is important to eat a varied and balanced diet. Talk to your registered dietitian for specific advice about your diet.

    Breakfast
Small glass of fruit juice or a portion of fruit (see below for what's a portion)
4 tablespoons of muesli or 4 tablespoons of porridge oats or 2 weetabix or 2 shredded wheat or 6 tablespoons of other cereal with 200mls semi-skimmed/skimmed milk
    or
2 slices of toast or 2 crumpets or 1 bagel or 1 muffin with 2 teaspoons of sunflower or olive oil spread and 2 teaspoons jam/marmalade/honey

    Lunch
sandwich made with 2 slices bread or 1 bread roll or 1 pitta or 1 tortilla/wrap or 4 crispbreads with salad and
    2-3 oz (60 - 85g) of cooked meat/poultry or vegetarian alternative or 4 - 5 oz (120 - 140g) tuna/sardines/mackerel or 3 1/2 oz (100g) cooked prawns or 2 boiled eggs
    2 teaspoons low fat mayonnaise
with 2 teaspoons of sunflower or olive oil spread
Dessert: 1 low fat or diet yogurt

    Dinner
6 tablespoons pasta/cous-cous/noodles or 4 tablespoons easy cook rice/basmati rice/bulgar wheat or 4 egg sized potatoes
with 6 tablepsoons vegetables or large portion of salad with low calorie dressing
    2-3 oz (60 - 85g) of meat/poultry or 4 - 5 oz (120 - 140g) fish or 2 eggs or vegetarian alternative or 3 tablespoons pulses, beans or lentils
Dessert: 1 scoop ice cream and a portion of fruit (see below for what's a portion)

    Additional daily milk allowance
    1/3 pint (200mls) milk

    Snacks
2 portions fruit and 1 biscuit. 1 portion = 1 banana, apple, orange, pear. 1 slice of a large fruit like melon or mango. 2 small fruit such as plums or apricots, handful of grapes, cherries or berries. 1 tablespoon of dried fruit

Personally I know for sure that my blood sugars would be elevated and I'd be ravenous and !!!!!y as hell if I tried to eat this diet.
