Happy Belated Birthday Edwardia!
Hope everyone had a happy Easter (was manic here).
Yogurt - It's my understanding that the carb count on the label is done prior to fermentation which reduces the carbs by 20-30% - the small problem being that you have no idea how long commercial yogurt has been fermented. If you make your own yogurt (easy) you can make sure that it gets to the point where the whey starts to separate - in short, the tarter the yogurt the less carbs that remain, pretty obvious when you think about it I guess. If the yogurt is then strained a lot of the remaining carbs are lost in the whey (I strain it myself then use the whey when I make bread for those who eat it) but the downside is that the whey is full of protein, amino acids etc and is really quite good for you. So, while Total is expensive you have to compare it to the equivalent volume of unstrained yogurt - my guess is about a third again in whey.
Sheila54 - how can your GP be sure? If you're eating low carb that keeps your blood sugars under control so neither the fasting nor the HbA1C tests give a realistic result. (I managed to get my GP to understand that by showing her a week of my fasting and post-prandial blood sugars even though the nurse obviously struggled with the notion that their tests might not be as cut and dried as she would want them to be.)Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

daska - I understand about the blood results but have been tested before I went low carb and it was ok then so presume it has stayed the same. I think that the tests were just routine because of my age and because my liver results were all over the place when I first started low carb last year. Well done for making your own yoghurt, I have a friend who does the same. Hope that your week went well!
I am struggling at the moment as I ache and am tired all the time. Trying to keep to 35 carbs a day now but, on fitday, the calories show that I am eating 1500 - 1600 a day. Not sure if it was better before when I just ate sensibly and counted the carbs!! I am also helping a friend who has decided to try low carb this week and is staying with me.
Keep smiling0 -

Eridanous Greek Yogurt 1000g tub (blue/white packaging) lovely and creamy 3.2g carbs per 100g, protein 4.8, fat 10%, no info on calcium sorry.
Hi Mazz :hello:
This is the best yogurt ever made. Going to get some tomorrow.
I have mine with a nice amount of pecans. I love the yog as it is but put pecans in a bowl, add yogurt then leave at room temp for 10 mins min and it's just wonderful
Yumsk! So glad the talk went yogurt wise as I had forgotten quite how lovely this is

I have used various sweeteners for 40 years with no side effects, unless of course that is the cause of my insulin resistance?
doubt it..
Hi Mercy :hello:0 -
Thanks to both of you for the information. I am trying to up the calcium intake without overdoing the carbs so these would be great! Do you know if either of them are probiotic please? Always a good idea to do the gut a favour, especially as mine seems to play up a lot.
Hi hun!
The whole probiotic yogurt thing is a bit misleading. Yes they contain what they say, but they do not easily survive the stomach. If you want to repopulate your gut with good bacteria it's better to take a supplement which is encased and guaranteed to reach the place you want it.
It's like face creams which contain coq10. Yes Coq10 will help reduce wrinkles if used in sufficient amounts. sufficient amounts can't be used in a mass market cream as some people get a bad reaction. Hence the facts are true but the reality is severely watered down.
It is possible to get good probiotics at reasonable prices from iHerb. If anyone wants a code for $5 off first order, pm me. Else i'll post it here if asked
I have recommended probiotics to friends who have IBS and good feedback has been received. All have gone on to more research and further health.
http://www.iherb.com/Healthy-Origins-Probiotics-30-Billion-CFU-s-7-Vcaps/19521
For example. This is 1 weeks supply. I've suggested friends get at least 2 weeks. These are also good to repopulate gut after antibiotics. Antibiotics kill good bacteria too.
So anyway, SHEILA is you can afford about $7 / £5 then using code you can get 14 days of good probiotics including postage. They take about 10 days to arrive. So many things are good n cheap on this site but remember that if your order comes to more than about £18 you may be done for import duty.
I'll pm you the code.
I've used these myself when I was having problems after wheat intollerance was mooted. They helped me very much. Sorted out the unexpected :rotfl:
So, you could get these (and if they work well) then just buy the massive buckets of lidl yog and save money forever :rotfl::rotfl:
That's kinda what I do

I'm still plodding along too
Good all day, having some fab salads with feta, avacado, ham and scotch egg, everyone in work oohing and aaahing at them
but finding a bit of choc hard to resist, happy that the heartburn has gone again tho.
Made scotch eggs from lc sausages and rolled them in crunched up fried onion salad toppings, then oven baked.. yum
Must admit, i'm really tired on lc, went to town shopping and had zero energy, really felt like lying down on the pavement for a nap.. honest, is that bad.
Was so energetic when i did IF after 19 hours without food and 5 hours high carb, than eating regular low carb.
I am torn :undecided
Thats what i do with gut bacteria mercy, take a supplement.0 -
Hi
I have been researching sweeteners for the past 2 hours and have come up with the following
aspartame - definitely no
sucralose (splenda) - need to stop using due to manufacturing process
stevia - seems the best of the bunch but I will only use it when cooking. Stevia is a very sweet plant based product but still has reported side effects.
Canderel Stevia has malodextrin added, Truvia has erythritol so neither pure but think malodextrin seems slightly better than erythritol so will go with that.
Has anyone else tried these and had any problems?
I have used erythritol and found it good.In recipes asking for Splenda I've used it 50/50 without any lessening of sweet. I've heard that a blend brings out the best in each but I've not made the Bakewell Tart for a bit so haven't tried all erythritol yet.
Always thought maltodextrin was less good than xylitol. Chose erythritol over xylitol as it is not deadly to dogs like xylitol is. However xylitol is seen as the bees knees of fake sweeteners as it doesn't spike blood sugar.
I don't have a dog, I have cats so the choice wasn't one of immediate need. My sister has a dog though and the thought that Angus could possibly get hold of any wasn't worth the risk.
Yet to try stevia but have not heard of any side effects at all. Please supply refs to what you've seen. I was always 'gona get sum' from iHerb but always ran out of my price allowance before I did. I've seen ads for it on tv - anyone know what it's called?

Ignore the calories! They aren't all the same! Your aches and tiredness may be due to your carb detox. They WANT YOU. Take a bit more coconut oil and make sure you are drinking enough water. If the peepee isn't pale you need more water. If you haven't got a problem there, try a little more sea salt in your diet. Not table salt - that's just chemically incompatible with you.
Still eat sensibly. Lots of greens.
Big love
