:rotfl: it's true, osteoporosis makes bones brittle.

After menopause you are more susceptable to osteoporosis, i think it's due to years of not absorbing enough calcium (the body needs vit d for this) and the body leeches it from the bones. Supplements are sometimes recommended.

Yeah, knew that. Just didn't realise it was calcium deficiency. Logical. Seems like just taking more Vit D/Calcium should fix it (early on: not when it's too late).. but perhaps it's more complex than that...

Maybe slightly raised Calcium is my body's way of preparing itself for the onset of 'the big M'.. Sorta like.. [STRIKE]the calm before the storm [/STRIKE] the storm before the calm...

    Anyhooo, yesterdays scoffs:

B: 2 lc toast, 1 frankie (managed to knock Colac off shelf: smash
    :( ) (~2g)
L: Cute little ham/cheese/lettuce/mayo lc sani and handful of Brazil nuts. (~3g)
T: Roast pork and leeks, with a little gravy (~5g..?)

    O: Tea, coffee, > 4 pints water/g.tea+lemon, s/f gum, little Asda snack cheese, M&S s/f lemon drop, 2 squares 85% choccie.* (~5g)

    Total carbs. ~15g-ish

    Exercise: N/A

*Oops. Have counted choc. as 1g per square a couple of times. It's 2.1. Never mind.

Not sure I'll keep counting carbs. as it's a pain, and I don't feel that I need to really.. I'll see if/how much I lose this week (Wed.) and go from there. If not happy, might try and copy the week I lost 5 lbs..

    Happy day folks.

On the subject of bones, my contraceptive advice nurse was talking to me last week about such matters and she told me that when we reach about 18 our bones are at their maximum density. That's it, we get no more bone for the rest of our lives, so if we don't get enough calcium and vitamin D between 18 and the start of the menopause we could be in for some brittle bones in our dotage.
As Mazzers said, if we don't have enough coming in our body used it from our bones causing them to lose density and there isn't a thing we can do to get that density back.
This is the main reason I've been advised to come off the Depo jab, its the lack of oestrogen that speeds up the bone depletion apparently. I'm a bit annoyed that I wasn't told any of this when they put me on it, but its too late now.
Walking is good for maintaining bone health, and best of all is getting vitamin D from the primary natural source- the sun. Being outside in daylight is the best way to get vit D, you can't get enough of the stuff from supplements.

    Lecture finished :D

I'm thinking of trying the fasting. I'm waiting to see if you fasting girls get a good result first, let us know :)

It does peak around 18 if left to its own devices. However, it can be maintained or increased by load bearing exercise.

Luckily for men, they are normally dead before it becomes a problem.
  • Hi! Remember someone saying they ordered wheat gluten from Amazon? I have a £30 vcr to use...!

Well-bit dissapointed-back to 90kg. Admittedly it'll be water but have had the odd carby bit of chapatti with curries & G/F had a big box choccies.

Gonna have to give up booze/or just have 1 naughy night. Trouble with LC eating is preperation-let myself down on this.

Oh well-will have to try again. Deffo water as when socks come off it leaves a mark for ages....(!)

i thought adult bone was laid down till about 25 yrs old
i do know with the depo however that as it stops your periods its like a mini menopause and therefore can have an effect on your bones in the same way. i think as long as you do weight bearing exercise upper and lower body it helps to maintain it . they dont reccommend it to teenagers as 1st line anymore because they havent reached their maximum bone density and therefore if they are on the depo injection they lose those final years of stregthening up their bones .

feel really nibbly today. started off ok with bacon and eggs , but about ten oclock i really wanted someting sweet , i ended up having a bourbon biscuit at work , i never eat normally in a morning at work . then when i came in at lunch time i really wanted lots of carbs. so far i havent been too bad , ive had 2 slices lc bread and butter, cheese , chicken , i bunged some scampi pieces in the oven which im eating now and ive eaten a rolo ( managed to put the rest back )
im on my own till about 4 ish and its a real danger time , but i dont know why i feel like this , im not hormonal ( as far as i know) and ive had a really good week with a good weight loss , you would think that would have motivated me .
i have to avoid the kitchen somehow. also its DH's birthday and the DDs have made him a cake covered in chocolate buttercream and chocolate finger biscuits all round the edge and rolos on the top . how am i going to avoid that tonight , im drooling just writing it down :o

Sistercas, don't beat yourself up over it. If you do indulge tomorrow is another day, start again. I'm saying that from my berth under the wagon as I slipped off spectacularly over the weekend - lots of wine, vodka and some carby foods. Back on again today though, so I hope I didn't do too much damage.
  • Yes, I'm the same. Just bought/had a packet of crisps (16g carbs) which is very unusual, and they weren't actually as nice as I remember.

Personally I think it's down to fat intake, I've been having lean meats and salad stuff recently, rather than cooking in butter and having creamy sauces, and I don't feel as satisfied. A big wedge of belly pork and cauli cheese is on the cards I think!

    Hi everyone:wave:

We all have bad days so don't beat yourself up:D Look on it as fooling your body into thinking it isn't starving but try again tomorrow. I remember in the past thinking, on a bad day, that I might as well have everything that I liked as I'd gone wrong anyway:eek: I also had a treat after I had weighed each week.

DEBTMONKEY1A - if your socks cut in then you are definitely retaining fluid. Do you take diuretics for this or do you know why you retain fluid?

This gives a lot of sensible advice about osteoporosis

    http://www.patient.co.uk/health/Osteoporosis.htm

Having my hair coloured today, how vain, I picked up a copy of Grazia to read. There was an article in it about diets

    http://www.graziadaily.co.uk/fashion/archive/2012/01/10/grazias-clean---lean-plan-part-1.htm

Think that I was definitely the Fat Phobic but makes interesting reading!

Breakfast : 1 scrambled egg with 1 ryvita and butter

Lunch : slice ham, prawns, lettuce & mayonnaise + handful nuts

Dinner: chicken & cashew stir fry with vegetables

Snack: 1 ryvita with St Agur Delice spread on it

2 cups coffee, 1 cup tea, Ribena light and lots of water

Exercise bike turned up today so just needs to be assembled and then I need the willpower to use it every day_pale_

    Weigh day tomorrow.
