Horace - try that oline card shop - moonpig. you can design the card and the greeting yourself. I am sure they would have something suitable for a gay wedding. It's is pretty cheap too.

things are going ok for me at the mo. I have done my tax for 2008/2009. I only earned 595 after expenses but still have to pay £120 in tax. This seems like alot as a percentage of my earnings. probabaly because it was in addtion to my usual employment income. I am wracking my brains for other expenses I can include to bring it down a bit.

I am still on mega diet....lost2 pounds then put it back on, then started afresh on monday and have lost another two since then. I have also started running again after not being out since before xmas (snow...). Still got a ways to go tho. I hate being on a constant diet but i so easily put on weight and I have some really bad eating habits so needs must. Sitting at a desk all day doesn't help either!

Still just carrying on work wise. Got the end of month article set to do this week and next along with all the usual stuff. As per usual i am not very organised - but my clients beleive I am so that's all that matters!

Hope you are all do ok. JP - try not to let the in-laws get you down. I would tell the OH you want nothing more to do with them. tell him that you understand if he wants to continue seeing them (and the kids of course)- but that you will no longer be seeing or talking to them. Just wipe the slate clean and that's that.

Hi all - am back from the horsepickle - seems that my eyesight is ok for driving as I meet the required standards but it could be that I need a new lens in my specs because the focussing may be out slightly because my eye pressure has increased (thankfully I have an old pair of specs).

Need plenty of rest too - I feel exhausted as once again I was awake in the early hours of the morning 2.46am to be precise after having yet another nightmare:rolleyes:

Laters - I am off now for a break, a bite to eat and to watch some telly.

Hope you all had a good day today? Just wondering if the shop move went ok for TCM? We haven't heard from her for ages.

    Hi all ...

Thought I would post this link - useful for anyone starting off - it comes from the Mystery Shopping Thread - so the details are part way down the post:

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=19785575&postcount=1

But it covers important basics such as:

    Registering for tax

    National Insurance

Working out how much tax you’ll have to pay

    Record keeping

    Working out your profit/loss

What expenses can I claim against my income?

Me? Apart from two brief periods I have always been self employed - currently doing self funded research work - mainly in the area of innovation across a range of activities.

Sorry that is vague ... but really just wanted to say well done on the opening of this thread!

Bleurgh, currently working my way through my self-assessment form - first time I've done one as self-employed. I run an eBay business from home. I am struggling slightly with "rent, rates, power and insurance costs" - I have looked at the "official" guidance but basically it all seems fairly subjective!

Would anyone sharing how much they claim for "rent, rates, power and insurance costs" each year?

  • Hi Strapped, I can't really advise as I'm still humming and hahing about what to put for mine too. Whatever proportion I decide to go with, I'm not sure if I should take it from the total bills, or just from half as I live with my boyfriend. Getting all confused about it :o
much work to be done - new sig coming soon...

Hi strapped - I've been doing the same this week- concensus of opinion seems to be that it's easier just to claim a nominal fiver a week to cover electric/heat/ council tax etc, I also put down a tenner a month for broadband/landline as my business is online too.

and if anyone is interested in using accounts software try this for free

    http://www.vtsoftware.co.uk/transaction/index.htm

I am in no way connected to this site, but I use their accounts package to produce accounts.....this is an excellent book keeping package based on excel and is easy to use.

can be downloaded free from here..http://www.vtsoftware.co.uk/tranplus/index.htm

    edit to add:

The cash book is free forever and is what most sole traders would need.

There is no reason why anyone on here would need to purchase the 'final accounts' they are really only for accountants doing statutory accounts for companies...and should only be used in a professional capacity.

VT transaction is free at the moment and once you have downloaded it it is on your pc. I can only think that you would need to purchase the product if you wanted to take advantage of updates or the support but its not rocket science and is easy enough to use.

I am getting a count-down on VT Transactions I have 44 days to register. The cash book does not have the message but I used VT Transactions not cash book.

Any advice - apart from transferring everything to cash book? I'm not sure of the difference between the two. We are only a small business income £10K
