I have ordered a book from Amazon (well two copies of it actually - 1 to keep and the other for a prize) Poems & Readings for Weddings by Julia Watson. I clicked for Super Saver Delivery so should get the books on around the 7-9 September:cool:

Afternoon Purple - I hope you enjoyed your trip across the pond:D

I have been fairly busy today - I banked £100 in £2 coins into my business account, sent a cheque for £115 off to pay for the wedding stand at the fair later this month. Nipped to the stationers and got a quote for a pop up banner (£100) but I have decided that it will have to wait until I can afford one. Whilst at the stationers, I blagged an empty paper box and spent the morning covering it with some purple and white paper plus I cut a hole in the lid to turn it into a postbox. One of my fellow wedding planners has pointed out that I can get a proper wedding post box from a shop and re-use it - I am too tight for that and would rather have something for nothing, I can still re-use it. Its just more expense and I am trying to limit my business spends to essentials - e.g. travelling to the autumn fair (going on several days) and to the Events UK show which is on for two days - I would rather use my money for that than buy a cardboard box:D

Another lightbulb blew this morning which means that I only have one halogen light in this room which is insufficient, I don't have any more bulbs and if I did I cannot change them:rolleyes: I then remembered that I had a daylight lamp that Access to Work and the University bought for me a few years' ago which I kept after I was made redundant:rotfl: It is now sitting on the window sill with its long arm extending over my desk:j

I still need to get someone to jump start my car fo me then I shall have to take it for a spin - an hours drive should do the trick. I am not using the RAC because they will charge and my ex hubby has said that he doesnt want the additional expense - c'est la vie - I shall have to either con a friend or stand at the side of the road with my skirt hitched up:eek::rotfl: Sometimes needs must:rolleyes:

    Hello Lynne

Our thread has been here for a while now - we use it to keep ourselves motivated as it can be lonely working from home. What is that you do?
  • Hi all (and Horace) :D
I think this is a thread I saw get a mention elsewhere very recently and am just posting so that I get email notifications. I will probably provide input sometimes too.
My home is my work base although I'm out and about all day (cleaning windows). But home is where I keep my work records, receive cheques and phone calls (usually diverted to my mobile) and is the address for IR purposes. I live on my own in a 2 bedroom flat but the second bedroom is my office plus (very) occasional guest bedroom.
Although I offset a small part of the running costs of the property against tax (mainly a bit of electricity and a little gas), I don't offset any of the actual property itself as I understand that this can cause capital gains tax complications when selling.
My filing system has recently graduated from the floor to box files :D .

    Hi Paul

I think it was me that mentioned this thread elsewhere:rolleyes: Welcome to our self employment chat.

If you're a windowcleaner then you must be good with heights and ladders? I am no good with neither as I get dizzy standing on the first rung of the ladder and although I may venture half way up the ladder if dared then I freeze and cannot go up or down:eek:

My filing too has been moved from the floor into magazine files, box files etc (although some admittedly is still in carrier bags - mainly rochures:rolleyes:)
I need to have another sort out as my shelving unit is looking untidy.

    Jobs for today:

Sort out Trade Packs for wedding fair
See if I can blag some more prizes
Book Hairy Mary in for some waxing
Sort out new contents insurance as mine runs out tomorrow:eek:
Print off more Prize Draw sheets
  • Hi! Would you mind if I joined? I'm in the process of starting my own business, and have found this thread really helpful and inspiring. I'm temping four days of the week so that I have an income, so only have one day (plus weekends) to work on my business, which I'm finding infuriating. I hate the temp job and it's awful money, so I sit here wishing I was at home working on my website or marketing!! I like selling on ebay (just my own unwanted clutter or charity shop finds) and wish I could earn enough from that or some other way to enable me to stay at home full time and set my business up properly as I just want to get on with it asap!!
So in an optimistic fashion, even though my business isn't up and running yet, I thought I'd join in if you don't mind!
(Sorry - didn't mean for my first post to be a moaning rant about my temp job! I really am a very cheery person! Must just be extra sick of it today. I am grateful for the income, but am just frustrated now - being doing it for over a year )

Emski - I know what you mean about resenting having to work in a 'proper' job until you're all set up. I did the same thing when I became self employed back in 1996 - oh my goodness - that's a long time ago!!!!! Hope it happens quickly for you.

Welcome to paulgonnabedebtfree and all other newbies too.

Oh yes, hello to all the regulars too! Don't want you to feel missed out.

Last day of the summer holiday today - boo hoo. I've not worked this week so I can spend the last few days with my children. This means i'll be very busy for the rest of the week and next week but that's the joy of being self employed. Mind you, it's taken a while to work when suits me rather than when people ask. I'll never forget when I first started out and I agreed to a 10pm appointment - madness!!! Never again!!!

    Have a good day xx
