The first iphone was a gimmick, compared to other phones it didn't do much, which could be said of the current one, the update will help.

Dont get me wrong it changed the phone market but it sold so well on the back of being the first touch screen phone, which is a gimmick however good it is, not a phones features.

What Update?this is what boosted sales,Quote from Web Page
By day he's your average American teen. Just two weeks out of high school, he saved money from his part-time job fixing computers and waited three hours outside an AT&T store to buy an iPhone.

Fact is,if you own an iphone and jailbreak it then there really isn't anything new in the update as it was already available from third party's month's ago, that is what made iphone sales rocket,i wouldn't agree it was down to being the 1st touch screen phone,

    It's not a gimmick,it's one the worlds smartest toys:D

The update is a major one bringing many standard features it should have had from the beginning, now not relying on third parties to do their work for them.

It was a gimmick to begin with but they've had to take it seriously and bring in features other phones have, probably not a gimmick now, touch screens are everywhere.

The average user wouldn't know about jailbreaking etc and when buying a new iphone I dont think the third party apps were anywhere near a selling point (though admittedly they could be now for some), did they exist when the iphone was released sales are down to it being the best touch screen on the market.

There are two types of people that knock the iPhone.

    Either;

    1. Those that have never seen/played with one.

    2. Those that are green with envy as they cannot afford one.

I am not an Apple Freak, and have always avoided Apple in the past, but I cannot believe anyone (without some ulterior motive) can seriously doubt the wonderfulness of this gadget. 30 million people (and counting) cannot surely be wrong!

i agree with you so much , i also avoided apple and mac's but the iphone enticed me and im so pleased. yes it is expensive, and no im not saving one single penny by haveing it. but its the most useful phone ive had, and ive had a good few...lol
if i had known about the price drop i might have been tempted to wait. as i got mine at xmas. everyone deserves one pressie..even if they got to buy it..:rotfl:

Yup sorry, Web Bolt On is what i meant,im aware you are on a contract but depending if you are payg or contract all you need to do is put in the correct vpn settings on the iphone, don't be expecting fast web access(like wifi) unless you are in an "Edge" area,on saying that,if i access the web using gprs its about the same speed as dial up,which is not too bad if its an urgent thing i need to do,a point to note though is,what i was trying to explain in my previous post,if at present you do not get charged for accessing the web on your mobile then you do not have to have a web bolt on just set the correct vpn settings in the iphone,i don't have the bolt on but i can access the net for a complete day and it will only cost me up to £1,another example, when i was with vodafone on a payg sim i could also access the web just like you can with any other mobile, you could also pull up to mc's,bk's or a bookies etc and connect to their wifi, yes i understand what you mean with regards to using your iphone's wifi to connect your laptop.;)

hi jim- yes i meant 'jailbreak', not 'hijack'!! i intend to get on the case with customer services and see if i can wangle a cheap WEB bolt-on. In the meantime, what is your advice regarding buying an Iphone? Indeed, perhaps you are selling one...?

At moment I am on £20 tarrif with O2 that give me 600 mins, 2000 texts and unlimited web browsing on phone. (They spotted when I used phone as modem attached to computer and treatened disconnection)

So... If I grab an iPhone either PAYG or off eBay - can I use this sim in it? Will I have to hack it first?

Go for it,sorry i don't have one for sale but if you google "Gumtree"(without quotes) i can guarantee you will get an iphone for a lot less than you would on Ebay, just have patience until the right one comes along,i bought mine from there and sold them on Ebay :D ,just the other day there was one locally to myself on Gumtree(Edinburgh) iphone 3g 16gb top price being £220,after a haggle maybe £180-190

    Best of luck!

No you will have to unlock and activate with that sim, unless of course it is already unlocked,if it is software unlocked ie jailbreak ,then if you update the phone in itunes it will remove the unlock and jailbreak which you would have to redo, use google, all the info is out there.

That would be because of the amount of downloaded data,i am sure there is a limit even if you have web bolt on's, 200mb im not 100% on this though as i have only been with o2 for a couple of month's.

    Hi folks,
Apart from the release of the Nano phone in the summer is it likely there will be a replacement for the current iphone? ie an updated version.
    Thanks

    Marty...

My Nokia can "Cut, Copy & Paste" can your iPhone do that? :D lol
You'll have to wait till V3.0 is released later in the year :P lol!!!

Yes, my iPhone will cut, copy paste and do anything your phone can do and more, you see because I have a jailbroken iPhone which is 100% legal before anyone says it isn't!
