Dan29, perhaps you could tell me the benefit to me of having my information easily available to anyone who happens to want to view it? Could you explain to me what the benefits are?

Yep, once you've answered my question asked three days ago:

I'm not alarmed. Electoral roll data has always been available. Can you explain to me why I should be alarmed?

Battered wives trying to hide from their husbands would probably be alarmed. Dead-tree electoral registers require an effort to be examined. This site requires little effort.

Fair enough, but the statement I was replying to was "I think everyone should be alarmed about this kind of site." Clearly there are some people who would not want their details online but if you're trying to hide from someone you have lots of other things to worry about presumably, e.g. when and where you go to the shops.

Can you explain how the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? - I'm not being funny, I'm really interested. Maybe there is stuff on there that I haven't thought of using.

I'm not being funny either, but no I can't really explain, as I don't understand what the disadvantages are, and no one seems to have explained.

Here's a thought though: perhaps people would treat each other a bit better if they didn't feel they could go into hiding easily - for example, people who rip people off using eBay might think twice about doing so if they could not falsify their details so easily.

There are many examples on this site of people trying to find people they've lost touch with - isn't that a good thing, if someone is able to be reunited with a long-lost friend or relative?

Overall though my main point is that this sort of information has been online for almost a decade (without anything terrible happening as far as I know) - so why the sudden alarm?

Thinking about it I guess there are some advantages. I've just looked up friends from the past and got their addresses in such a short time.

I guess I'm a bit of a hypocrite then as I like the idea of being able to trace people but not the idea of being traced myself!

I can see why some people wouldn't want their details found quite so easily though (exes, wife beaters and bunny boilers).

I've just removed my details though because I have a very unusual name and, I can't explain why as I have nothing to hide, but I just don't like the idea that they are so easily accessible.

    Hi Toots

Thanks for replying. That's all I'm trying to say, exactly what you said, that there are two sides to this (like so many things in life) and I don't understand why some people keep saying that having this information available is 100% a negative thing for everyone. Obviously I can see that in some situations people do have specific reasons for not wanting their details available to all.

    All the best

  • I have helped someone (from another forum) trace their long lost relative, using the UK Info disks which uses the 2005 roll and directory enquiries.

I believe they are now both happy.

Thats 1 of the plus sides.

I will offer help if anyone wants it, just pm, with surname, first name, any middle also any known spouses/dependants and last known location.

  • I have used the site to look up someone elses address and find it useful.
I am on it both telephone and electrol roll - I have no problem as it doesn't have any information I think should be secret like dates of birth. If someone wants to find me its a great website, if I was hiding from balifs or psyco ex lovers or had a job where I might make enemies I would make sure I was ex-direcory and ticked the box on the electrol roll form.
