I think the Information Commissioners Office have stopped B4U Search letting people carry out checks on names/addresses from the Electoral Role as they were breaching the Data Protection Act. I think they are looking to stop similar sites with these type of search facilities.
Good news for all those worried about these deatils being online and available to anyone.

It's still working, I just did a search..0 -
I think it is scary really that your information is available to everyone. But on the plus side, my husband has been searching for an old workmate for quite a while now and i have just found him. DH will be over the moon as they were really good mates but just lost contact when they both changed jobs, houses etc.

There are loads of sites out there offering access to electoral rolls. The biggest and best in my opinion is 192.com0

I think everyone should be alarmed about this kind of site. The government is seeking to intrude on our privacy with its National Identity Register (the real worry behind the Identity card act) and also seeking to cross connect every piece of data they own about us (whether correct or incorrect), this commercial publication is the thin of the wedge.
Accept this kind of site lying down, and it becomes ever easier to push the boundaries of what people will accept. B4USearch wants me to put my real phone number into its web site to authenticate my removal request. I'm ex-directory. So what they're asking me for is a piece of information they do NOT have, to stop showing information about me???0 -
What a cheek! Premium rate fax or enter further personal details into their website!
Methinks there's a complaint in the offing under the DPA...

I think there is a big difference in having to trudge down to electoral role to find out info-and being able to access it at the push of a button.Anyone else not see that.0

Hi Dan29, please read all my post again, and my post below and tell me what it is you need explaining and I'll be happy to do so. Or perhaps you could explain to me why it is perfectly alright to have one's name, address and any other details the company has managed to collect posted in a public place where any lackwit can garner it with no effort or expenditure?
Hollydays has put it very succintly.0 -

I think the benefits of having this information available far outweighs any disadvantages. I've read your posts again. Can you explain to me why I should be alarmed?.0
