Rach - yes you can grow lettuce indoors on a windowledge - go for the salad leaf seeds rather than whole lettuce and then you can cut and come again.... have a lovely holiday - did you decide where to go in the end?

Lil-me - how sweet of DP to surprise you like that! Haven't cooked a pork joint in ages so I can't help you there.

Quillion - I know exactly what you mean about the thrill of watching planes.

Thanks for the suggestions on articles. Have decided on the filler article. It's rather off topic but is local to the group. I found an old postcard of a place in town when it was in its heyday rather than the run down, seedy druggy place it is today, along with a glowing description of it in a Ward Lock Guide of 1906. So I've scanned the postcard in and will transcribe the article and simply entitle it 'Food For Thought' or something like that I think!

I will look out for some salad leaves seeds when I'm back form hols then.

Right, I'm going to nip to the shop for stamps and post my book swap off.

Lil me -weigh each piece and cook them in two tins? It is the time for the middle to get up to temperature. use some sort of liquid in the bottom of the tin - even water will do, and put some foil over the top for the first half of cooking, helps to stop it from drying out.

Quillion - like I said before feel free to PM me re redundancy - I advise on it for a living (HR Consultant). And no, you can't automatically be first choice just because you are part time.
