Both my husband and my brother stopped smoking by just giving up and not having another cigarette. My brother had tried many times before by using nicotine patches etc. and always failed but i think the difference this time was that he wanted to do it. When my husband stopped it was really annoying that so many people seemed to want him to smoke and offered him cigarettes. Even my mother bought him cigars at Christmas. I think it makes some smokers uneasy if one of them gives up and they are unable to so they try to bring that person back into the fold.

I too havent read all of these post as there are just too many.....
What i wanted to say was that i stopped smoking nearly 3 years ago and havent looked back since. I smoked 20 a day and smoked for about 10-12 year. I loved a cigarette as much as the next man and smoking ruled my life. I stopped after reading the Alan Carr book (how to stop smoking) and i can honestly say that i dont think there is any other way to do it. Dont borrow the book from the library because then you have to give it back and its so much better if you have it in case of an emergency. Reading through some of these posts i am really shocked at how people are quick to start smoking again at the slightest little blip or problem, this is not the alan carr way and just really points out how weak you are as people that at the hint of a problem the only solution is a cigarette. Also those people who are wearing patches.. so what .. what have you stopped? nothing you are still getting your nicotine fix just via another way.. the only thing that is different is that you are not putting a cigarette to your mouth. If you really want to stop smoking then you should bite the bullet and just stop and i promise that reading the alan carr book will help you do this, no patches, no saving your money up in a pot just stopping because you want to, with no gimicks or tricks... come on people how weak are you that your every waking moment revolves around a little stick of tabacco.
Sorry if this seems harsh but a lot of you on here seem to be making rubbish excuses about how you had to have a cigarette, and lots of you have very tragic stories about friends and relatives who are dying in a lot of pain through smoking and that still doesnt motivate you, i think thats shocking.

No doubt this post will generate a lot of angry people but i stand by my word, if you really want to stop then you will patches or no patches.

(i am not on commision from alan carr)

well coz no one has argued this point i thought i would even thou i don't smoke. Some people DO need patches and have been weened off them very succesfully. they may still be getting a nicotine fix but they are lessening how much over a certain amount of time. Just because Alan Carrs book worked for you it doesn not mean it will work for everyone else. I applaud anyone that can give up and by however means possible. also the question is, how weak were you over the 12 years that you were smoking...obviously very so maybe don't be to quick to knock people down. And if your going along those lines why not bhave a blast at fat people on a diet who love a particular food item, or alcoholics, drug addicts etc etc. If its an Addiction then there will be people that fall foul to it but the main point is that they keep going untill they succeed.

    thank you Will :A :kisses3:

TBH reading that post last week along with a pm from another 'wellwisher' made me feel like carp & was no help whatsoever.
What has helped me more than anything is my friends on here who have continued to support me by pm out of the way of critisisms like these & hopefully I have helped them in some way too.

Thank you to everyone who has been posting encouraging & supportive posts, you are all brilliant & I have stopped smoking for a week now :)

Well done Bellie, thats brilliant! :j

Good luck to everybody trying to stop smoking :)

you thanked me for my post then say it didnt help and you had a post saying how useful mine was but it seems to have disappeared.
Im not having a go at people who smoke and yes i did smoke for 12 years but during this time i wasnt weak cos i loved a ciggy and enjoyed everyone i smoked but when i decided to stop i stopped i didnt make excuses for myself to go back on them and all i was saying is that if you want to stop then you will try your best untill you stop but making excuses of why you had to have a cigarette is only cheating yourself and by posting your reason on this thread and have other people say ahhhh well a new start tomorrow, that will do you no good because they are just backing up your excuse and making you feel better about having just one little cigarette. Once you stop you stop for good, if you have a cigarette every saturday night with a glass of wine as a treat then you are still a smoker, having cigarettes less frequently isnt any better in my eyes cos then you are almost making it acceptable to continue smoking. I would be more than prepared to support anyone who is finding it hard as i too found it very difficult but i did it. I recommend alan carr cos it helps you understand the psycology of why you smoke and the best way to change this it doesnt go on about saving money in a jar or the health risk which we have all heard before it is a refreshing and easy to understand method. Using nicotine patches and other nicotine replacements does not fit the alan carr psycology and in my opinion just prolongs you from actually stopping.

  • I tried the Allan Carr books and it didn’t stop me from smoking so you can’t say it works for everyone. :(

I did quit for 3 years through sheer willpower and nothing else and stupidly started again last year. I’ve done it once before and I will do it again, it is very hard giving up smoking and my best wishes to those who currently are in the process of giving up. :)

With regards to seeing family members/friends who are ill due to smoking, a lot of the time it is easier said than done to quit, quite often it will have the reverse effect and actually make you want to have a cigarette because the situation is so terrible/stressful!

    hello dooj
I am really sorry, I do understand what you are saying. I did post to say that I appreciated your post but as the day went on I was thinking about what you said and ended up feeling really bad about myself for not being able to give up with no help.
I deleted my posts as I received a unpleasant pm from somebody else & was feeling vulnerable at the time which I have apologised to the op for for messing up his thread.
Please would you accept my apologises for any misunderstanding.

  • I quit for my new years resolution and haven't had a ciggie since 31st December 2005! I quit for seversl reasons - money being the main one. I worked out that I was spending £30.00 per week which is over £1500 per year!! A luxury holiday or a debt paid off in full!
The cost was making me feel worse than smoking did!
I used the medium strength nicotine patches and they really worked. They just take the edge of the craving. The company who makes them says you should use the max strength for X amount of weeks then the medium strength for X amount of weeks and then the lowest strength. I just used the meduim for about 4 weeks after that I was realising at bed time that I hadn't put one on that day and gradually I just stopped using them altogether! It is possibe but you have to really want to quit! I tried before when my heart wasn't in it and failed.
    Good luck!!!
