  • Hi

I gave up smoking sometime last year. Its that long ago that i gave up counting the weeks.

I'm afraid to say that I found it rather easier than i expected but that was with the help of my wonderful boyfriend. ;)

I had tried in the past and nearly killed everyone one that i met!!!! Somehow this time I've done ok. I still think about it every so often but thats not even once a week any more, and its more like a thought of "I would have had a cig now". However today has been a little hard but thats because my gran went on holiday and on her way back managed to fall and badly break her leg at the services. Being a nurse I know that she will be being looked after but when you can't be there its just not the same and they won't be able to transfer her back home till prob next week. But anyway my wonderful boyfriend has promised to drive me down there tomorrow night.

That was getting of the point a little but it can be done to all those that are trying but I'm sorry I'm not lending my boyfriend out to anyone!!!!!!!!

    Good Luck to everyone.

  • I'm really sorry ozzyfan. I've just read your post and realised that i'd posted an emotional one. I hope you don't mind its just that everyone one on here is so great and i just wanted to share what made me think about a cig today.

It does get easier i promise you and like you say think about how much you are saving. Although I'm not counting how much we have already booked two hols camping this year already (short breaks) which I couldn't have afforded last year.

Keep up the good work everyone. :j :j :j

Hi SFW ( smoke free wanabees ) OMG Ozzyfan you have just made me realise why I was in floods of tears the other week just because of a stupid television programme. Well Im still off the ciggies and I thought I was doing fine but this morning I really went off on one with another driver who cut me up on the school run  really must try to curb my temper....either that or wear a notice around my neck to warn others :p

Keep it up and good luck for tomorrow

Hiya, hope you don't mind me popping by, only just noticed this thread! :)

My OH gave up smoking in January after reading the Allen Carr book, still going strong now.

I read it, finished it and carried on smoking.

On Friday night I had 2 fags left when I went to bed. Saturday morning I smoked one before work and one in my break (at 9.30am) and I said to myself that I wasn't going to buy anymore.

    AND I HAVEN'T!

I couldn't give up when OH did because I was only doing it because he did, and it wasn't for me (if you know what I mean?)

Few days on, I've probably gained 3 stone and slept for 18 hours a day lol but I've not got poo breff in the mornings (haha) and I can walk at a faster pace to work without getting out of breath. I've also cleaned, polished and hoovered like never before (anything to take my mind off it and it's something to do with my hands!)

I will save £28.70 a week and so I'm gonna send off for my provisional license so I can learn to drive! Wouldn't have the money to do it otherwise, so its a massive bonus for me if I can carry on and learn to drive in the meantime.

Hope everyone else can keep it up - Good Luck! :):):)

  • HI, I finally stopped 1yr 3 weeks ago after many, many attempts, succeded this time due to telling myself and others that " I am going to try not to smoke in the next hour" then at the end of the hour congratulate yourself and try for another hour, etc etc, Always have 1 ciggie within close(ish) proximity, stops the last minute panic/rush to go and buy a packet before the shops/garage shuts for the night. For the first couple of weeks treat yourself to something indulgant, ie new cd/book/magazine (which also has the added benefit of giving you something to concentrate on for a while, go for walks, alot, de clutter - alot, above all BE NICE TO YOURSELF, If you read my thread, Busy Bees, thanks Martin, you will see that I have booked a surprise holiday in Paris, Eurodisney for the family on half of my savings and used the other half towards getting my credit cards down, I also need to contact my insurance companies as I believe that I will now qualify as a NON smoker so should get reduction in insurance policies, GREAT!!!
Good luck, never give up giving up, I, and others, are here for you, Go for it, You have sooo much to gain. A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step, give it a try, If it's any consolation the night befoe I gave up I was actually in tears wondering how on earth I would be able to get up, drive to work etc without my usual friendly fag for support, I was so addicted, my fags were my comfort blanket, if I can do it I honestly think anyone can, go for it and good luck. That 1 ciggie you keep in close proximity, if things get VERY bad, smell it, touch it, put it in your mouth but dont light it, tell yourself you are not that desperate and will give it another 5/10/15minutes before you light it, go away, do something, anything,(within reason) and keep trying to get over the next few minutes, this will increase to hours and eventually days. If ou drive, after a few days non smoking splash out on getting the care valeted, not cheap but another incentive not to smoke. (plus your car will look/smell better. Put your savings in a jar and if you get really desperate take your savings out, (in notes) and try setting fire to them, worked for me, couldnt bring myself to do it and told myself that is what I had been doing every day for the last upteen years. Food for thought, my mate and her husband both smoke, we worked out their ciggies cost more than their mortgage each month so technically you could buy another house on what you would save. all the best, let us know how you get on.

    Well done everyone :T

I'm at the close of day 5. Dreadfully irritable since I stopped the patches, so put one back on today, which of course starts the itching off again - that bothers me more than the not smoking!

Charlotte - hope your Gran is doing OK and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I've noticed I can smell much more (ashame it was a plant in the office that's been there for 3 years and smelt like cats pee :rotfl: )

    Good luck for tomorrow everyone.

Ali why dont you try a different patch ? - there is only one type that I can use and funnily enough I am most allergic to the clear ones and they are supposed to be the most hypo allergenic. If you only want 16 hour patches and the only ones you can use are 24 hour ones then take them off at night. I dont know if you are going through a smoking cessation clinic but Im sure if you speak to them they will be able to prescribe a different patch. Good luck.
