Genesreunited is a good place to start - you can do plenty there for free and some parts need membership which is about £7 per year I think from memory

  • As most census records before 1901 were lost,

    I hope this isn't a euphemism?
This account may be over 50 years old, but probably makes interesting reading even now:

Not quite sure what you mean? Anyway I meant that they were lost due to various reasons including the fire you refer to in that article as well as being pulped by the government during WW1. I've just found this article on the National Archives which gives more information. Thanks for the link - it does make interesting reading. For anyone doing Irish family history research, the lack of census & other information can be overcome. There is a leaflet published by the Public Record Office in Belfast that can help. It's number 6 - Census Substitutes.

for GRO references for cheaper certificates i use this site
    www.freeBMD.org.uk

    Hi to all ancestor seekers!
I'm new to this, but I have discovered that you need to be very careful where you buy birth, marriage and death certificates from. The price difference can be huge. Ancestry.co.uk charges £19.99 per certificate, but if you order them from the General Register Office you pay £7.00 if you know the reference numbers, or £10.00 if you don't. Also, do see what info you can get for free by clicking on the various links before you click on 'view the original document', which you have to pay for.

I am currently using Genesreunited to load up my tree details and seach using freebmd and freecen but I notice that you can get 6 months Essential membership to Ancestry.com when you buy Family Tree Maker™ Platinum from Tesco with £15 of clubcard points... do you think this is worth doing and is anyone using this software?

I use FamilyTree Maker (different edition) and its really good in my opinion. This sounds like a good deal. I have just cancelled my ancestry subscription as I've not got time to use it at the moment and they wanted over £100 to renew!

I'll renew via Quidco when I have time to use it again

I use www.geni.com online and for my personal backup, I use Family Tree Maker.

  • Thanks for the freeBMD one, it's probably the best one I've seen so far, I have managed beforehand to go back as far as 1831 and hoping to go further still. It is a rather unusual surname; there is a strong notion that it comes from Ireland, I've traced a couple of Irish ones who had children in the UK; but one of those children married and had kids in Quebec. But I can't link the Irish ones to my ones at the moment, there are still some gaps.

My subscription is up for renewal - I've been with ancestry.au for the past year because there was a link on here I think explaining it was cheaper. Are any other ancestry.com sites cheaper because of the exchange rate at the moment?
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
