You may find that the library in your area allows free access to ancestry. It does around here.

I have a subscribtion to Ancestry which I paid all in one go. Being a member means that you have access to everyones tree that is not on private. I have been able to discover so much information through other peoples trees and have even been able to trace half siblings! Even if you don't subscribe your tree will stay on there and you can add to it. You do not need any additional software.
Good luck. It's very addictive once you get started!!
Here dead we lie because we did not choose
To live and shame the land from which we sprung.
Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose,
But young men think it is,
    And we were young.

You can save your Ancestry tree as a Gedcom file and export it onto your computer (but you need a suitable program to be able to open it to view info) Go to "Manage Tree" and "Export Tree" button
  • Yes I save my tree as a gedcom every so often and upload it into brothers keeper or family tree legends (both free)

This site allows you to download free programme, that you can then upload your Gedcom file to

Personal Ancestral File (PAF) is a free genealogy and family history program. PAF allows you to quickly and easily collect, organize and share your family history and genealogy information.

I bought a cd programme from PC world - "Create your Family Tree" that allows you to upload photos etc too
  • I have an ancestry subscription and both myself & my husband can use at same time on different computers - same IP address obviously.

A friend of mine would dearly love to do her tree too - Can I give her access to our subscription by giving her our username & password? She'd be using at same time from a different IP address OR would this be problematic?

We've got no problems with her seeing our tree with notes on it etc. Has anyone ever dione this & did it work OK or did you get repercussions?

Someone else has used my subscription from a different computer but not at the same time exactly as I have. There hasn't been any problems.
As I say if you can arrange to use it at different times........
