I've just had an email from Roots Magic regarding the new Rootsmagic 4. If you bought Rootsmagic 3 on or after 1st August 2008, you may be entitled to a free upgrade:
"Free Upgrades
If you purchased RootsMagic 3 on or after August 1, 2008 or as part of a special genealogy conference offer during 2008-09, you are eligible for a free downloadable upgrade of RootsMagic 4 by visiting http://www.rootsmagic.com/myupgrade and entering information about your original order. Please allow up to 48 hours for processing as we must manually verify each request to verify that it qualifies."
I bought my copy in September last year from Amazon so am giving it a go. Fingers crossed!0 -
Does anyone know where to find a list of some of the job definitions for the census? Eg what was a Tob Master??
More likely it's 'Job Master' - someone who supplied horses, carriages and drivers for hire
There are several sites which list old occupations - see genuki.org.uk for a list0 -
#54"I was only able to view indexes to Births Marriages and Deaths at the Library yesterday morning and not the actual records on Ancestry.com. Has anyone been able to view the actual records on Ancestry.com at their Library free of charge or am I just unlucky in that my local Library has limited subscription to this site. I was able, however, to look at Census records so this was very helpful."
Mirabelle - Ancestry, Freebmd and other similar websites only contain the birth marriage and death indexes, not scans or transcripts of the actual certificates. You must pay for these I'm afraid, from the GRO they are £7.0 -

It is exceptionally rare for any mistake to be discovered on the MSE site.
Unfortunately this one is a corker - and commonplace (forgive me, I am, similarly, a 'correct apostrophe' nut!!)
The word is geneAlogy, NOT geneOlogy
Thanks

Hi guys, I realise that this is not exactly what the thread is about but you all seem so knowledgeable I thought you might be able to help.
My Junior class will be studying local history next term and I'd really like them to be able to use census info, directories and other primary sources to track what's been going on in our Kent village , back as far as we can go. I thought for example they could track who'd lived in a particular house, or did a particular job at different times.
A visit, with them all, to the local library is a little impractical. Do you know of any good websites where this information is availale? I have of course noted them many good sites already listed on this thread.
Thanks to you all in advance.0 -

If you are trying to track people, that gets more difficult and suggests subscriptions! All my software is completely free, even the operating system. Look at Linux0 -
Have a look here http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~genmaps/genfiles/COU_Pages/ENG_pages/ken.htm
I found this 1885 Kent map

Doing a bit more thinking, your best bet is to get in touch with the local family history society. They would give you much more local history and be able to perhaps take artefacts into school.
