How much should a colleague pay to have a car share journey to work?

From your earlier posts you've always given the impression ''he's driving to school anyway so why should payment be expected''. This has now modified to accept payment is due, but you obviously think £200 p.m. is too much.
Unless I'm wrong - they aren't friends/mates - it's purely coincidence they live close to each other.
You appear to think K is being fleeced by a contribution of £200 p.m. - but you equally accept it's far cheaper (and more convenient) than public transport.
Maybe it is 20% of K's salary but K chose to live/work there - maybe you should increase his salary to enable him to run his own vehicle? Not have his travel cost subsidized by a work colleague?
Atm it all seems to be about 'poor K' and his shyster work-colleague. Maybe the driver is equally !!!!ed off that a) he's expected to give free lifts then b) when he makes a charge of £200 it's the hot subject of staff-room gossip? Maybe the driver just wishes the bloke never arrived and that everyone else would stop discussing his business?
It's got to be a pretty sh1tty 40 miles each way if they hate each others guts!
Well, what I actually want is this thread back on page 1.

Can't believe I've just read this thread from start to finish...
Anyway, pure and simple, its a market place. M (or K or Q) - the driver - is under no obligation and should feel under no pressure to offer K (or M or Q) - henceforth known as the 'carpet bagger' or 'whinger' - a lift to work just because they live nearby. Perhaps he values his private space and personal time on the journey in more than he does the offset to his own travel costs. Maybe he even activelly dislikes the other's company. He's therefore totally at liberty to charge what he likes. His actual financial costs are only a small consideration. If he likes the other's company, he's likely to charge little; if he'd prefer to have his own space and feels encroached upon/under pressure, he should charge a premium to offest the degradation to his quality of life. If the 'carpet bagger' doesn't like the price the driver is setting then he should make different arrangements; and presumably the driver would be happy with that or then offer a lower price, depending on what his priorities are.0 -

Also, the general rule of thumb for K is stop moaning and pay up or get the train (or bike and if K has enough energy, have an illicit affair with the drama teacher, slip on some comfy shoes, smoke a pipe and sit and spout a few facts...) - before you quote IM - I know your response to this - Yep
(K isn't looking for a freebie here, let us not forget that) and this is all the advice we can give him.
If K is so unhappy about this why doesn't he just go back to his original plan i.e the £45 train and £5 bus.
Why will he not cos he gets the convenience and saves a vast amount and this obviously suits him and his pocket.
Why should K save himself £30 per day, get door to door ride, and all the convenience of this, BUT M gets basically nothing.
Why doesnt K suggest £20 per day then he is saving half and M is benefitting by the same.
Why has it got to be that M doesnt benefit but K should benefit by far more when its actually k who is getting the favour.
Take into account tax mot insurance tyres etc.
I know M has to pay this anyway, but if K pays a nominal amount , he will be like this forever, who would want to buy a car if you could pay nominal amount and get the convenience of one.0 -

The "M" could be Otto Mann... blowing out of the water your theory they are both women (although he does have the hair of one)
EDIT - Or it could be nicknames... "M" could be "Mothers boy" implicating Seymour Skinner...0
