How much should a colleague pay to have a car share journey to work?

As a teacher, another teacher shared his moral dilemma with me and I wondered what other people thought and what he should do?

Said colleague's (lets call them K) dilemma: K does not own a car and travels with M who does. M asks for money to cover the shared cost of the travel to and from work.

Distance from town B to place of work (lets call it S) is 40 miles one way and M drives a small family saloon car (petrol). M asks for a set amount per day and expects payment. M also demands that K go home whenever M wants to regardless of K's commitments at work.

How much should K have to pay?

1. None - should be free
2. £5 a month
3. £10 a month
4. £20 a month
5. £30 a month
6. £40 a month
7. £50 a month
8. £75 a month
9 £100 a month
10 £200 a month
11. £300 a month
12. £400 a month

When we have enough replies, I'll tell you how much he pays.

  • I would think a different way and pay half the public transport cost so if a travel pass is £200 a month £100 would be the figure.

Does sound very like a maths lesson for 12 year olds.

80miles @ 40mpg makes the min around £5per day for the fuel if shared.

What are the alternatives that introduces the convenience factor and alternative costings.

Who has the greater need, the car owner for the money or the non car owner for the lift.

    poorly specified problem.

Alternative costs would be train fares (£40 a day) and then a bus (£5).

Non-car owner has the greater need.

  • I travel a similar distance to work and diesel roughly costs on average £50 per week so I would ask for half of that. However, I would also be more flexible about times and other commitments if I was asking someone to pay.....

£200 a month and K would still be saving a fortune, not to mention the convenience.

Hang on, whats with all these ludicrous amounts?

I think its worth noting that whether the passenger was going or not the driver would be going anyway.

This is the problem with society today - these days people want paying for favours.

I think a token payment of £20 a week would be more than sufficient.
