How much should a colleague pay to have a car share journey to work?

  • Alternative costs would be train fares (£40 a day) and then a bus (£5).

Non-car owner has the greater need.

    £40 per day?? - leave off !!!

I did think about that & TBH it would put me off giving a regular lift to someone. If they are sharing the costs per mile then it might be worth it but for free & to put your NCB at risk & your insurance premiums in general, NO WAY:eek:
For that reason alone I wouldn't do it.

Well in a similar (in some ways) situation I asked for half the petrol costs but dictated the timings. If they didn't like the timing then they didn't pay for that journey and got the bus.

But it was a shorter journey - 15 mins by car but up to an hour by bus with a change/waiting time.

I have an arrangement with my chum when we go out - she will always pick me up even though I have a car and have offered to drive us about. So I will buy us lunch and coffee when we are out. I do this with other friends too so everybody is happy.

A contribution towards petrol and parking would be sufficient I would have thought - say a token payment of £10-20 a week.

And if K is in meetings when M wants to drive home then K should find his own way home on those nights.

This is crazy. If they're friends, then they should come to a mutually agreeable "gentleman's agreement" - probably about 1/2 the petrol cost, but rounded up to a sensible number (£4.75 > £5, for example) to cover other costs. We've got to bear in mind that it's a journey that's happening anyway!
My main issue is the inflexibility of their agreement. Surely they must understand that a little leeway is sometimes needed with regards to leaving times? We all have days when we work longer then we'd hoped and there should be a little more give-and-take.
I am the General Manager of an hotel in Telford and am happy to offer advice. I can't promise to be perfect, but I'm happy to try to help.

K needs to tell M to Foxtrot Oscar. The car belongs to K and M should not impinge on work commitments. K & M should accept a compromise on working hours if at all possible but M has no right to demand anything.

I think its M who owns the car.
