The original poster said when they get enough replies he'll let us know the answer.
So think of it this way, my 3 replies are pushing us closer and closer to that answer...

You can get a reliable banger for about £400.

Will give the passenger their independence and flexibility and make them savings in the long run (unless they buy a pup)
  • I have a story about a colleague that used to give me a lift to work.
I used to go by bus but by chance I saw the colleague drive by one day. He very kindly offered to pick me up. This happened more and more regularly and in the end we can to an agreement that he would stop by each day.
Now, as I was new, I was on such a low salary (rumours were flying around of £18k+.. I wish!) and could afford to give him very little. So we agreed on 50p a day. With my newly acquired paper round this was a sum I could just about manage (IF I also did the Sunday morning run - double money for the thicker Sundays you see).
We were both happy with this arrangement.
We'd spend many happy minutes talking about the previous nights TV and how my paper round was going. The journeys simply flew!
During the next few weeks a few of the other lads I knew from the paper round also needed a lift. I asked if, for the same deal, they could also get a lift. My friend was more than happy. He was now better off by £2 a day (a day!!) doing the same journey he'd normally do.
Then, out of nowhere, my "friend" wanted more money. "75p a day or walk" was the choice. 75p! Where was i expected to find the extra? That's a 50% increase overnight... With my hectic social life I was never going to be able to fit in another paper round :(
As the credit crunch hit the number of newspapers we needed to deliver dwindled. I wasn't too badly hit. But the others had real hardships. They commented that all copies of "Smash Hits" had now cancelled. This was a double blow as they enjoyed reading the latest gossip on "Mental as Anything" as they walked around... anyway, this crunch meant that they were falling behind with the petrol money.
Out of the blue one day we were told that my friend was "moving". oh well, it was great while it lasted. I got myself a travel pass and my friend lost his £3 a day profits.
I still see him from time to time driving past my stop. I wave hoping he'll stop so we can catch up on the latest happenings on "Grange Hill" but he never does. He just waves and carries on by.....

    what a nasty chap
